Oh man that sounds great! Is it a cat-back system or you just need the muflers welded on?
That's sweet! The mufflers look pretty inexpensive... I'm sure you could pick out some nice dual tipsIf you wanted to keep the factory look.
Well, before I do ANYTHING I need a belly pan. This will be my next investment, hopefully in the next couple of weeks. I'm really not liking that I have no belly pan right now, which is why i'm driving my gf's car while the Passat stays in my warm garage.![]()
It will be a great investment especially since I plan on getting lowered in the spring.

bah... no faith in german cars...
my car is low as hell, i dont have any belly pan crap and i am on my third winter without any problems (that haven't been my fault).
wait until spring and get a catback and lowering springs.

nothing past the stock oem covers.
i just try to stay on plowed roads when i drive during the winter... (except when i'm having fun).
unless you plan on getting SLAMMED... like bagged slammed... i dont see the point in getting anything more than the oem covers.

What about an old-a$$ garage floor from the '20's made up of dry-rot wood that pops up when you drive over it which just so happens to rip off my existing belly pan??

A metal one probably wouldn't have done much better against wooden borads poping up into the undercariage, a metal skidplate may have just forced it into the engine bayor rip some bolts out but I dunno good luck with the decision making

A stronger skid plate is definitely a good idea if your going to get lowered, but its nothing more than a reassurance. As long as your a bit more careful and aware of the fact that your car is lowered, you will be fine! Regular driving on bumpy roads and such is still ok, the main thing you need to worry about are BIG speed bumps and steep entrances to gas stations and such. Even with a big skid plate up front, it wont help because you will high center on the middle of your car. Just be aware of these things and approach them at an angle and you will be alright.
I believe my car is about 2" (if not a little more) lower than stock. Winter is the only time that I really have any trouble, and that is usually solved by staying on plowed roads.

I'm 2.25" lower than stock in the front with no aftermarket skid plate. The only problem I ever had was going over a bump in the road too fast that looked like this ----v----
You shouldn't have any problems if you're only going 1.5" lower...

If you dont wanna go the coilover route I hope you will get the Bilstein shocks with springs. Your stock shocks will go out anyway...
