I used 3M super 77 for mine. Just spray the foam board and then the fabric. Let it tack up a little bit, stretch and smooth it out.

I would recommend getting the stretchiest fabric you can. If you get a fabric that is too "taught" it will he HARD to conform to the curves. Also if you get a pattern fabric, take your time to get it all straight.

Yeah i kinda wanted to do something with a pattern on it. Is it best to start in the middle and work your way out? Or maybe one of the ends?

I would recommend a solid color, like black. I got my fabric at Hanncock Fabrics and it was actual foam-backed black headliner material. Make SURE IT WILL STRETCH!!!!! is HAS to. The recesses for the door handles and fold-down mirrors is why.
Adhesives- use the best- 3M. They make a few but the best is "super 90+" or something to that theme. Maybe super 77? Don't be scared to get spendy with the adhesive- you won't want to do this twice.
And yes check my build thread for pics and info on how i did it. (http://forums.projektgerman.com/showthread.php?t=9862)
Okay, I took these pics last weekend but just got around to posting them.
Stripped the headliner of the water-spotted & ruined grey cloth:

Stripped off all the ()^(&*%#*(^%*& foam, which SUCKED, but my rotary DA got it done a lot quicker for me ;)

Recovered in black headliner material, using 3M super 90 (perfect adhesive for this IMO):

What is that in the picture!?!?! The pillars, and the sunroof motor cover... what happened to them? :)

I did my bfs headliner with 3m sticky spray and non stretchy plaid fabric. Looks pretty badass Its not perfect with the lines but it's pretty darn close. http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i268/bore_dumb/robs%20baby/004.jpg

For sure super 90 is good stuff. It's all in the timing with it. Gotta lightly spray it on both surfaces, and let it tack up for less than a minute but not dry.
Also another word of advice, I used the foam backed material because glu can soak through thin material, and then oops! Your headliners ruined. Also you want material that will stretch because look at the handle recesses.
Plaid will not stretch as Sophie said so when you get it in those curves and such, it pulls the fabric in and makes the rest of the pattern warp. All my plaid pillars were hard enough to tell me that..
I'd never do a headliner in plaid because it would be too hard to get it perfectly straight. But that's just me!

So when you guys got to the point where you laid the fabric down. Did you start at one end or did you lay it over the board and smooth it out?
And thanks again for all the advice. It is going to help me out a lot.

heres what i did when i worked in an upholstery shop.
-cut fabric to size (leave 6 inches all around for trimming.
-center fabric on headliner
-lift one half up, spray both headliner and fabric with glue
-let sit for a minute to tack up.
-start from the middle, and smooth down all the way to edge while holding the fabric off the headliner to eliminate wrinkles.
-do the same for the other half
-use nice sharp scissors to poke holes for visors and whatnot.
-done.

i used the super 90 crap and the black headliner with the foam on the back of it. The thing is clean the headliner board good. I sprayed half of my headliner from the middle to the back and same with the material and then installed it from the bottom and worked my way up. Turned out real good and so far its still holding up, but only been about a year on it.
