Clunking in reverse

just like the title says i have a clunking in reverse with my 97 golf gti 2.0 8v someone please!! help

When does it happen? Is it when you shift into gear? Does it do it when you let up on the clutch? Is the car a manual? Have you checked the linkage or fluid.... yes manuals have transmision fluid. Where is the sound coming from? Does the car have any other drive train or suspension issues or even mods?

We need some more info.........

well i have no mods to it .... its when im in reverse (manual) it happens when i am moving backwards in reverse but once i pull it out of reverse it stops .. i believe it is coming from the front wheel area

I could really use more information, however the first thing that pops into my wasted mind is that your trans has a chipped/marred ring/pinion gear caused from a piece of reverse idler gear floating around in the case. I simple road test would confirm my educated guess :)


Of course before jumping to conclusions, I would check the basics like wheel lug bolts, cv joint nuts, etc...;)

When you pull it out of gear it stops with the car moving? Hmmm....I would of originally said CV too. But, not sure now.....

ding! I would take a walk through all the replacement steps you did. There is a chance that something wasn't tightened up properly?

I get a clicking sound in reverse, but I imagine its just the reverse gear going out. Seems to be a common problem in Mk3s...

If you just did the CV joints, make sure you did it right.

My uncle has a clunking sound in his Mk. III TDI going reverse. I don't know if he fixed it or not. Last time I drove it was 5 months ago...
