For the last few days my Jetta hasn't been able to start. It will crank but will not turn over. I think my fuel pump might be out but I don't know how to check it. My hope it is something easy but I don't know. :banghead:

can you hear it? Loosen a fuel connection somewhere and see if fuel comes out.

Lift the trunk carpet up and stick your head near the pump. Have a friend turn the key on.

Also you can disconnect the line in the engine bay that connects to the fuel rail like oldschool said. Just be careful taking it off, they rip easy and are sometimes stuck. When you attempt to start the car fuel should come out.

it could be several other things besides the fuel pump

before you go spraying fuel all over put your ear next to the fuel pump or place your hand on it. Then have someone turn the key. Also check the fuse and relay. You can always jump the connections the relay plugs in to see if the relay is bad. You can also bypass everything and connect the pump dirrectly to the battery...kind of like bench testing the pump but in the car. Of you have digital multi meter you could see of the pump is getting powe.

I think everyone is assuming if he doesn't know how to check it he doesn't have a gauge and its damn easy to hear it run

on that track of going about it though... just because its running doesnt mean the impeller isnt toast in it...:hide:

I had a similar problem in my old car (ford probe GT) first we checked everything thinking it was the fuel pump and what actually had happened is the ignition went out. I would stick to basic diagnosis instead of just assuming its one thing. check spark and if the fuel pump is kicking on and determine which is at fault.
