View Full Version : R32 Suspension GTG :: Saturday, May 5

Well, after not getting anything for the R32 last year (funds had to go towards getting married :hide: ) I promised her (the car, not the wife) that this year I would get her more presents. I started with the wheels a month ago, and now I have a set of STaSIS StreetSport coilovers to put on. Also, I have a Neuspeed 22mm rear sway bar to put on that has been sitting in my basement for probably a year and a half or so now. The install of the rear sway bar requires the exhaust to come off the car, so she has been telling me that since its coming off anyway that she deserves a new exhaust as well. We will see about that one....
Anyway, I will probably be giving her (installing) the suspension and rear sway bar on Saturday May 5th. Next weekend is the wife's birthday (won't say how old she is, but its a significant one) and I doubt I could get away with being in the garage all day with my "mistress" as the wife refers to her :D More details to follow, but I just wanted to get this out there so people know about it and can figure plans out if they want to come join the fun.
Let's see if we can get through an install without busting out the sawzall or losing a finger! :poke:
If nothing else you get to see my car up on jackstands (plural) ;)

UPDATE:
How do you get to our house? Well, put the following address into mapquest and get driving directions, they are probably better than me trying to explain it :D
address removed....
Its a townhouse so parking may be a pain, don't worry though, we will find room for everyone. I would like to start this early, maybe around 10 AM or so? We have a grill and food could be purchased.... More on that later.
ill be there and you better beleive im bringing the sawzall

WILL THIS BE A MORNING THING?
I will for sure start in the morning, I want to clean my CAI filter as well (gotta take the front driver's side wheel off to get to it). I will probably do that early on in the morning. I would guess I would be in the garage around 10 AM....
Graduation is the day before, but I'll do my best to try to make it out. :tu:

Sure you can come! Unless mine goes fast I don't know that we could do yours too though. I have a 2 car garage where my car will be in the middle, and our driveway is way to sloped to do this type of work (just as SML). If we tried to put a car on jackstands in my driveway losing a finger would be the least of our worries.

Cool, the sway bar install instructions estimate 1.5 hours and most people I have talked to say suspension install is around 3-4 hours with the right tools (which I am buying as well). Should be done kinda early if things go smoothly... ;)

Hey guys, I just realized that I am a complete idiot and that next weekend is the 21st (not 28th like I thought). I could do this on Saturday the 21st if its easier for you college kids. Are finals over May 4th or when are they over? Would the 21st work better (I assume that is the weekend before dead week) or is that too short of notice for everyone?

May 4th is the last day for finals. However, if you do it on the 21st I won't be able to make it. I'm planning on going up to the Albert Lea GTG in Minnesota that day. :tu:

The only thing I don't quite understand is what the white plastic rings are for. I assume two of them go between the rear springs and the spring perches (to prevent noise?), but I'm not sure.... The instructions and packing list are 100% in German :dunno:
Anyway, they should be pretty easy to install, I got new strut mounts and strut bearings as well so we don't need to disassemble the stock suspension at all.
Oh, and just for the heck of it here is a new pic taken yesterday of the R32 in its natural Iowa habitat while on a super secret recon mission

Oh, and I found out what the white plastic rings are for, they go between the springs and spring perches to prevent most common "clank" type of noises.
Hey, I'm the new guy haha, is it cool if I stop by and watch? I'm planning on doing this to my car and am intersted in seeing the process first hand. Plus it'd be awesome to meet some more people. Where's this being done at?

not like i was spending money on her anyway. i knew the dumpin day would come sooner or later...so why even waste the money? :D I know for sure whos not gonna leave me - my Rabbit. That's why I bought it a pretty shorty antena...:D ...and tint is coming too...and darkened rear lights.
anyway, can I by any chance get some help with taking off the Dick Witham decal on the back of my Rabbit when I come down there? I have a hair dryer, but if someone has any better idea, feel free to give.
Edit:
I just gotta msg from her.
She said "**** you, go and have fun with your ugly "wabbitch". seems like you love it more than your mother...let alone me."
hahahah!!!!!! this is a classssic!
that was response to my message:
"I'm gonna go drive my Rabbit and forget you."
Another EDIT:
I'll probably leave my house at around 7am. I might possibly bring another V-Dubber with his MKV. Or more. It'd be awesome if four-five VWs could drive together down the I35. So if I could get your phone, usacjudge, in case I need it for minor directions...:D

Let it sit in the sun on a nice warm day. If it is just vynil it will come right off. If it is some sort of thing on with 3M adhesive then use a heat gun. We debadge cars all the time at work with one for the employees. I was lucky, my car never had a dealer label on it.
Gee Tea Eye V
04-29-2007, 07:28 PM
yeah it should just come off then goo gone will take away the rest of it, heat guns can be dangerous to your paint

04-29-2007, 08:59 PM
Is it just a vinyl sticker? Just set te car out in the sun and just peel away. Oh, and a heat gun is fine....we use them all the time in the bay. You only do it on low for like 5 sec and the vinyl is warm enough to come off. It isn't any differant than a warm day in the sun. Goo gone also gets rid of the wax in that spot you use it in.

Dude sorry I missed this, just got home from my volunteer thing. What I thought was only going to be 4 or 5 hours ended up being 11. Lucky me. Oh well it was my good deed. I got stuck installing a new wood floor since I was the only one with an air nailer and mitre saw. :D Ah to have the right tools

I had fun. Too bad I couldn't stay all the way, but I got the idea what was going on. Met some cool guys and that was what I basically came down there for....and Gary's suspension....maybe.

Its cool Todd, we had too many tools actually, we tried using spring compressors and it really only made things more difficult. We tried using them and they only got in the way. It probably took us 3 times longer than it should have, but oh well. The front is kinda low right now, I might raise it up a little but it looks really good.
If I leave the front like it is I would probably want to lower the rear a little more than it is. I will see where it winds up after everything settles, set it where I want and then get the alignment. The ride is awesome with them though, there is pretty much no body roll in the corners anymore, just ask the 4 or 5 people that got a ride in it last night at the b-day party :D
Gary says, "Anybody want a ride in the .:R?" Instantly about 10 start raising their hands and rushing over to the car to get in line. And I'll admit, I was one of them. :D

Lets see some pics :D I installed my suspension, control arms and TRE's at kevin's (vwmeister) shop yesterday when you were doing this, all I can say is thank god for air tools! How long did it end up taking you?

All people gotta do is ask, I am always up for giving people a ride. No need to be shy about it :tu:

I have to shuffle some cars around, the Dodge is in the driveway behind the Audi, so I have to move it and then back the Audi out so I can get a decent pic. I am currently pretty comfortable on the couch so I don't know how soon I will get to taking pics :D The install started around 9, and after I did a little adjusting it was 5:30 or so. That is with standing around for an hour or two in the morning, and eating lunch... Probably a total of 3 hours not working on the car, and 2 hours figuring out that spring compressors were doing more harm than good

Page 5 is mine!!!
Here are a couple quick pics, first me under the car after the wife told me there was "something hanging down". It was just the vacuum line that goes to the flapper in the exhaust system, I forgot to clip it back to the fender liner, simple fix.

And here are a couple quick teaser pics of the reduced front wheel gap that I currently have, it looks awesome this low, but I may have to raise it up a little...

Ok, the wife took off to Target so I backed the Audi out and got a couple more shots. Here is the best comparison shots I have right now, the rears should probably come down a little more...

Yeah, Jake definately stood on a rotor while he was there. Marcus just jumped right in and helped a ton, I think everyone there was able to pitch in a little, thanks guys! Thanks for the pics and vids Sinan, I think there are a few more pics floating around out there too yet ;)
I will adjust things a little more this week and try to get some decent pics (as long as the rain lets up some day). I drove the .:R to work today and I love the way the car handles now, just need to get that rear sway bar on that I didn't have the energy to do on Saturday.

I can help you sometime to put the sway bar on. Just give me a ring when you want to.
I'm late posting, for some reason my cable died at home so I have to wait for the cable guy to come. I had a blast!!!
Thanks for the hospitality!! Food was great, it was good to meet everybody. I think the car rides awesome after the coils. We need to pick a day for lunch Gary, I need to get your phone number too I was right by your house yesterday changing my plugs :)

My cable was out for a while too Sam, it was out when we got home from cadwiz's bday party until close to 11 Sunday morning.
I will send you a pm with my number, I am free for lunch either tomorrow or Thursday, or we could just meet up sometime this weekend so you can get those spring compressors taken back?
The wife was very impressed with how polite everyone was for a bunch of car nuts so you all are welcome back anytime :D
