Does anyone in the Des Moines area have the ability to check engine codes. I had my check engine light turn on and haven't figured out what it is yet.

Any auto parts store can scan codes for you....

Just got done at advanced looks like I have 4 codes. 1st is a slow response on the O2 sensor. Second is a code for speed and range sensor. Third not sure it had something to do with idle speed. The fourth is a misfire on cylinder 4. We are thinking the two that have to do with speed sensors could be causing the other issues maybe.. Thoughts?

Did you get the guy to write down the code numbers for you?
I always offer this because those codes are the important part. They can be referenced to the exact description and what is triggering the CEL.

Ya I wrote down all the codes.

Sweet. Post them up with as much of a description as you remember.
This will help us pinpoint what they are ;).

P0137 O2 sensor I think didn't write the last number to well so I am not sure
P0501 Speed/Range sensor
P1580 Manf control
P0304 Cylinder 4 misfire
Those are what I have.

Lots of thoughts....
Clean your throttle body and check for an exhaust leak back just before the cat(s) first of all. Your cat could be clogged.... The possibilities are almost endless ;)

I know thats the part that is annoying me.

any thoughts?
Yes. Did the parts guy at the parts store clear them out? Hopefully he did, therefore when or if the CEL comes back on you can begin by chasing down THAT dtc first.
The early OBDII doesn't time stamp when a dtc triggers the CEL so it is really pointless to try to figure out what all 4 of the dtc's mean.
Are you having any driveability issues? Lack power, running rough?

I cleared them out.

You cleared them out?
Did the guy at Advance let you use the computer? Or did he do it for you?
I work at Advance here in Cedar Falls and technically we are not allowed to clear codes... but if we know its not a serious problem, we can clear them.
Just curious how they were cleared... not a big deal :).
Just as Kevin already asked, how is the car running?

I cleared them at Advance. I wrote down the codes and all the info it gave me so I could look into it. Then I cleared them so that if the CEL comes back I can rerun it and see if something occurs but now I just need to find a garage to check everything out. Also how is it I just applied online for there today. I need a job switch.

What are you using to clear the codes?
It sounds like you just have a few tune up problems... again... how is the car running?
As far as the job goes, you have to be at least 21 for driving records. I'm happy with it as a part time job though.. which store did you apply too?

Car is running a little rough but otherwise still solid. I just selected all the ones in Des Moines. We cleared the codes with the computer.

I would buy the tune up kit for your 2.0L from germanautoparts.com its like $100 and then if your still having issues get an O2. But I would start with a tune-up. Also cleaning your TB and MAF can do wonders for the 2.0.

If I have the money after all my bills this paycheck I will be picking that up. Also Thursday I am hopefully going to try to find a place to look over my car.

Good advice in here. Some free/easy/cheap things you can do-
Inspect vac system for leaks. A vac leak can effect idle and many other things. As Gary said, clean the TB with carb cleaner and q-tips. That is gonna improve the idle for the most part. I'd replace the plugs too.. Wouldn't hurt while you are doing the plugs to ohm out plug wires tip to tip. Should read about 5k if I remember correctly. Check and replace air filter if it's dirty. Some things to get you started bud!

how is it john that our stores have all different policies that reach employees? being management there are less channels to me and i still dont get all the info!
at our store we are not allowed to hook up the computer for anyone... some obd connectors got broken years back... we hold an id and let you use the tester in the parking lot...
and you are correct... we are NOT allowed to clear the codes or tell anyone how to do it... but if they figure out how... whose to stop them?
