After spending $180 on a new radio for my Rabbit Gti that is shaft mount. I wanted Ipod input so i bought a cool old school looking radio on ebay w/ new technology.

Well i was bored watching football. Searched in my garage and found an old Panasonic Tape player, shaft mount - that was in my old porsche 911.

First the car it was from - which of course is long gone living in MI last i recall.

The radio -

Then i had these old sony powered amp / speaker thing that had the plug i needed for the ipod that had three wires..

So removed the screws from top of radio.

Then right away noticed a three wire plug coming from the tape player.

So i cut it up , attached the input wires from the ipod plug and plugged it into my 12v power supply and ...... NOTHING....

Hmmm i thought - wrong set of three wires , so i cut into the other three wires coming out of the tape player... again ..... NOTHING

So i removed the tape player completely from the radio to see how it worked in my hands...

I learned that i actually did have it right the first time, but i was manually sliding the tape player into activate mode with my finger... what i didnt realize was there there was a little metal bar - at the bottom of the tape player mechanism that activated the tape senor / input thing.. without a physical tape in there it was activating, so i went back to my original plug and tied in my ipod output, actually threw in my BIGGIE - ONE MORE CHANCE - single tape i scored at a garage sale this summer for $.25

Turned on the iphone - and BOOM it was fricking LOUD - so i turned down the iphone all the way and then got a nice sound out of it...

the tape player , still spins - like the tape turns - not sure if i want or need to disable that gear some how.. not sure i want to..

Of course doing this, you no longer can use the tape player.

I just wanted to see if i could do it and i did....... Now i wonder what other goodies i can destroy in my garage..

there is a guy on www.thesamba.com that is doing it for $180 i think - you send him your radio and he will do it..

I am not that quite well versed yet, but i am planning on learning..

Good for you! I wonder why it was so loud though.. I usually have to have my iPod all the way up to get decent sound out of it. Maybe a resistor on ground might be beneficial so you don't overload the pre amp or something? I'm not familiar with tape player circuits..

there is a company you can send my tape deck for my Saab into and they will take out the red blinking light (for security) and instead put in an AUX input so you can plug just about anything in and play out of it. It's pretty cool and handy.
