View Full Version : MK3 OEM Big Brake Upgrade

earlier this week I found a guy on eB that had some spare MK4 1.8T front calipers laying around that he wanted to get rid of, so last night i went and picked them up. he gave me the calipers, pads and stainless steel brake lines. the best part is, it was all FOR FREE! :D

so, i did a little researching and found out that a MK3 2.0 can use 1.8T calipers and 11" G60 Corrado rotors as a nice OEM front brake upgrade. i think i may still need to buy a couple of bolts from the dealer, but i'm off to a good start so far with $0 invested. ;)

the only downside is that i can't run these bigger brakes until i upgrade to at least a 15" wheel. but, this will be a good winter projekt to put together.

i want to thank Armanda for hooking me up. :TU: :TU:

If you can find 911 brakes for under 2k I would be amazed besides the upgrade kits keep the balance

I haven't been able to find a price yet but AP racing makes a 4pot and 6pot upgrade kit for the MKV

well, i think i may just go to O'Reilly's for the rotors. looks like they've got some plain Brembo 4-bolt corrado front discs for $35ish/each. probably will get my pads online though.

any recommendations on pads? i hear a lot of people using PBRs and also Mintex Red Box....

this is what the brakes should look like up front once i get everything....

for pads it all depends on your prefrence and driving style

axxis metal masters are nice a lot of nissan guys seem to run them

I ran Hawk HPplus on my daily/auto x car in college they were a little grabby on the street in the cold but other than that they were great

EBC Green I have had a lot of people tell me this is the pad for weekend raced dailys but I have never used them myself

Porterfield R4S are a great all carbon pad really grabby but also extremely quiet for a performance brake pad

no matter what you get be sure to search on how to properly bed in the new pads and rotors

thanks for the info. i've heard a lot of people using the Hawk pads as well. also, i've heard that there are different procedures for bedding in performance pads versus stock pads, so i'll be sure to figure out what exactly i need to do.

stoptech's website has the best step by step bed in procedure page I have found currently www.stoptech.com otherwise just google it there are plenty of links to the procedure

i dont mean to sound negitive at all.. i think its cool to be creative.. sounds like you have a lot of good ideas..

ecs motorsports has alot of brake upgrades..

i would honestly work on getting your car quicker instead of wasting money on brakes. i mean if you want looks.. buy a lot of stickers and a body kit.. if you want a quicker car there are tons of engine and suspension upgrades you can do to get more from your money

If you cant stop what is the point of going faster? improved braking is a huge deal not just in terms of performance but also safety in a fast road situation with equal cars and drivers a vehicle with brake upgrades will perform better over the length of a course than a vehicle with suspension upgrades....the car with uprated brakes will be able to apex corners better with less fade once you have seen a set of brake shoes catch on fire from track work you realize how important the extra surface area and heat dissipation offered by brake upgrades actually are...

Plus it woudl be difficult for him to get more for his money as the calipers were free and rotors/pads probably wont be more than $100

as a side note what type of EMS are you using?

wasting money on brakes? i guess in my opinion, i can't see a brake upgrade as a waste of money. and as far as referring to brakes as a "looks" mod, you must be joking, right?

doesn't braking fall in there with engine/suspension upgrades? no sense in having 300 hp if you can't slow back down, lol.

plus, i got these MK4 calipers and stainless steel lines for free. in total it will probably only cost me about $150 to upgrade to better designed, larger calipers, with stainless lines, and be clamping rotors that are an inch bigger in diameter. for me, cost is a factor.

going fast = $2500 turbo/SC kit
stopping fast = $150 brake upgrade

i'll take the brakes thanks. ;)

Sounds like an excuse to upgrade to VR6 Plus suspension, then you can pick from a host of 15-17" 5x100 wheels either OE or aftermarket.

^^yeah, but doing the 5x100 conversion just adds even more cost into the equation.

4x100 big brakes ($150) + price of wheels vs. 5x100 big brakes ($500) + price of wheels

and it could end up being even more than that for the VR6 stuff. i'm planning to upgrade to some wheels larger than 15" anyways, so its not really a big deal. then once i get the brakes on, i'd just need to find some 15 or 16" Civic steelies for the winter. :D

I agree with JJ as do many of the auto mags out there. Too many people focus on going fast and forget that you have to stop. If I wasn't going to use the 04 civic 16" rims I have in my garage for my wifes soon to be daily driver she gets in March I would let you have em. I used to use Hawk pads on my civic when I autocrossed with it. Loved em. Heard good stuff about Greens though too.

some 16" civic steelies would be perfect for my car. that way i could run them in the winter time with larger brakes. :tu:
