I've always used Pentosin or Mobil 1, best for the money. But I think Royal Purple is the best of the best if you can afford it.

First oil change after turbo install I have switched to Motul 300V. Before that I had run either Elf (Total now I believe) or Pentosin and my motor looked pretty clean when we opened it up to do the turbo install.

I swear by amsoil euro blend personally, tons easier to get then Agip Sint200 and almost identical performance stats

amsoil is bad ass, so is royal purple, motul, or elf. But for an everyday car running synthetic id go with mobil one. I run amsoil in my vrt

i've always used mobil 1 and its been excellent, and i usually run them 5-8k between changes. both the GTO and my Passat are very happy even well beyond the 100,000 mile mark. i don't think i'll ever use anything else.
i don't use mobil 1 in the BMW....only because it burns it off too fast, so it gets valvoline. once the head is fixed, it too will be fed the good stuff. :tu:

i use m1 in both my cars, no problems
Amsoil is good stuff, Royal Purple is all I use for synthetics, I use Redline for diff and tranny fluids.

Mobil 1 here as well :).
Is there any advantage to Amsoil, Elf/Total, RP over Mobil 1?
actually mobil 1 isn't as highly rated as it used to be. Tests have shown time and again that Royal Purple has the greatest amount of friction reducing properties in the widest area, and the temperatures it can withstand are very extreme. Amsoil I haven't heard of lately, but I've never heard anything bad that's come out of them, and their filters are top notch as well.
However, a lot of other oils are very good too, normally you'll never have a problem or notice a difference with a lot of these good synthetics and even semi-syns or dyno oil. There are a few that have different properties that can do different things like Rotella, but for the most part, if you don't race the hell out of your car you wont notice a difference. If you're looking at keeping it forever though and you want to minimize engine rebuilds down the line at 200-300k+ miles then higher end synthetics could help there as well.
But Mobil 1 is fine, a little over rated but still a good oil. Also on that note, there are a few you want to stay away from, Pennzoil is one of the larger name brands that really shouldn't be on the market, but ignorant people keep buying it along with Fram because "I've been using it for 30+ years and never had a problem!" Tolerances change, oils get upgraded, filters get made better, however Fram I heard got worse from what they were 20 years ago, today they look like junk inside a can (I break all filters open after an oil change and inspect them), and Pennzoil just leaves a nasty, nasty film on everything that's a pain in the ass to get out.

i use m1 for everything. even my oil burnin e21 loves the stuff. if your looking to switch up to a syn from a dyno and have more than say 75k on the clock it is highly recommended to run one round of syn blend Valvoline MAX LIFE... it was designed to take up the slack in worn seals and restore them... this effect will last even when you step up on your next oil change...
the difference is that dyno oils are not uniform... whereas synthetic is man made its made up of a uniform base with smaller molecules... obviously if you have even a slightly worn seal that you wouldnt notice with a dyno oil you would with a syn oil due to its tighter make-up...
