Just picked up my 2010 Golf last night :) I wanted to share pictures with you guys.. I'm so excited. I have a few small plans ready to go in the next month, and then once the warranties are expired, I may go crazy with it, haha!

I'll be doing a nice summer wheel set up as soon as it gets nicer next year, until then I chose to have the 15" steelies with covers for a good winter wheel I won't have to worry about, especially with winter around the corner right now.

Only extras I added was monster mats and the cold weather package :)

I will say, if anyone ever finds themselves in Wisconsin, I have never had such a smooth and headache-free buying experience like I had with Bergstroms VW. :tu: They did a lot of extra legwork for me to make sure I got my car as soon as possible, and with the best rates.

I've always wanted a Candy White golf or gti, so no complaints here :)

Hehe, as for interior shots my camera is dead, so will be posting some tomorrow probably. I really love the seats though, and it sounds so stupid, but its so nice having cupholders that aren't in front of the head unit!!!

I may consider programming/chipping down the road, but at this point I think I'm going to hold off with that route in favor of minor visual things I want to do. Out of curiousity, what kind of gains does the average 2.5 driver see/notice?

Congrats Abby!

Pretty sure you're the first one with a mkVI on PKG ;).
Hopefully there will be someone on here with a MkVI GTI  Or a TDI so I can drool over their fogs that I wish I had, or better yet one of the new JSWs!

Can you give more detail? Reason I ask on their site it says it goes to 181 hp....my 2.5 already has 180 hp so as you can see not much there. In fact they don't even list 2008 and up since they already are at the 180 vs I think it was 160 on early version of the motor. Now if they jumped like my 2.0T  that would be a different story.

The gains on NA chips arent that great and if you have a maf less 2.5l last time i talked to them about it they didnt have a flash yet but were working on it. Also i flashed a 2.5L and they have some problems having multiple programs and only run well if you just flash a single program. That in my opinion takes some of the fun with having an APR chip as i love the cruise control switching. If you want real power from the 2.5 i would go turbo. Both c2 and i believe NGP offer solutions but they are a little pricey. As far as bang for the buck the NA chips are lacking compared to the turbo files.

That was kind of my point.....you need the turbo setup to get the most out of it.

A super small update.. Hardly a mod, but a little better looking already.

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff69/b3rserker/2010golf/photo.jpg

Also an update on the car itself.. Went into Bergstrom's for my 90 day courtesy check, and I had them check the door seals as there was a noise issue at 45+ mph. The doors were adjusted and fixed (I saw many 2door owners on vortex having the same problem) and I haven't had a problem since.

I have some goodies showing up next week............... so until the next update ;)

Naw don't use nightshade. I'm sure smoked/clear sidemarkers are in the works as we speak...err...type? I personally think (also biased lol) the smoked sidemarkers will look great...it'll break up the white a little and also work with the other trim on the car (grille, headlights, etc). My .02. :)

:D I would love shaved, but I would only shave them if I ever had the bumper holes filled, sanded, repainted. Otherwise I'll either go color matched or smoked. I plan on doing smoked tails and rear reflctors as well. I want the car to be completely monochromatic. So we'll see, I have some time to decide. And Jeremy, I was saying that I wasn't going to niteshades them, lol. Did it once 4 years ago, never again. If I do decide to have it done instead of buying new pieces, I'll send the parts out to shifty. :)

Something a 400.00 car payment does not allow me to do.. That and I was much more carefree modding a used/older car. The thought of putting anything BUT brand new aftermarkets ($$$$$) makes me sick to think about.. whereas with the Mk4 I didn't mind as much, it was used itself.

I have had a car payment over 375$ since I was 18, its nothing new to me.. its just not wanting to put used parts on it and new stuff for a new model is expensive. I'm not complaining about that either, that's how it is. I just regret everyday getting rid of the GTI for this hunk of metal I don't particularly care for when I owe a lot of money on it. I've been waiting to wake up and suddenly be attached to it, but its not happening.

You need to do something to it to make it yours, make it stand out. That way it is not just another new mk6, but your mk6. It doesnt have to be something big, could be as simple as small details inside the car or a pinstripe on the outside. Get the new wheels mounted and installed, we want pics.
What about getting a mk1 or 2 to build into a fun car and leave the mk6 as a stock dd?

OrangeDUB
04-09-2010, 06:55 AM
Mk6 is still really cool! There has to be a list of free/cheap mods you can do. How about some vag-com tweaks? Intake? You'll turn it around.. I can totally imagine how you feel tho.

That sucks Abby. I feel that way with about a half dozen of my previous cars. BUT, I sold all of those cars to work my way out of a car payment, so there was a reason to my madness I suppose. Having no car payment is sweet, but is negated when having a wife and kids.

mod the intake, i assume that these things have a traditional airbox that you can swiss cheese. Throw some different mufflers on it! idk, that's definetly what I'd do to liven it up. ohhh, what about a rear sway bar? I'm probably going to kick my ass after I finally break and part out my gti.

I see what you saying it took my first accident to get attached to my jetta it's funny because I threw a gti grill and eyelids it feels like home now all I am in for the market for now is a catback and if they fit some a4 seats my seats just aren't the same anymore :/

I'm sure getting the wheels on will help.. I just haven't been able to afford tires this spring after saving/spending all my money to move and start over and continue paying bills starting at a new job. I am pretty sure I'll have excess money at least in June with it being busy at work usually, but the wheels will only be on half the time.. Come winter comes the steelies again. I want to get the OE Votex lip and sideskirts for this but before I buy anything I need to have money for registration saved up too by november :hide: It is going to be a raping.

20% in the rears, 35% in the front.. Under normal circumstances I would have done 20% all the way around, but I have a permanent card from my optometrist/Iowa DOT that permits me to legally have 35% in the fronts, so no moar sexy tax

Still have them yes :) If tires happen, they happen.. Summer finances are up in the air, one week I'm making $2k, the next $500, then back again.. so we'll see.

I'd like to buy Minh's tires in his classified thread, otherwise if I buy direct brand new, I'll probably be waiting until the end of the month or maybe until next year.. Who knows, I may just drag them with me to DITV and try to sell them. I'm liking the idea of dumped on steelies for now

Spacers I'm thinking about because I may be getting tires for my RS6 wheels soon and they're 8 inches wide. So it may be a silly purchase depending on what I decide to do, I DONT want it to rub, at least as little as possible. Maybe if I come across a pair cheap, until I make up my mind, who knows..

Got my sidemarkers painted today :) Thanks to The Doctor's Touch in Johnston, good recommendation Dave!! :tu:

Here are pictures from Jester Park this evening.. enjoy, and suspension update...

70% I believe.
The State troop who pulled me over the day of the club drive with you guys said that his front glass tested at 74% from the factory.

LOVE those painted markers, Abby. The car is definitely taking shape.

Chovi's idea about running with old-skool Beetle hubcaps is pretty sweet if you do decide to rock the steelies for a while. If you picked up a set of them, let me know...my father in law does a little paint work in his spare time and I'm sure he could spray these Candy White (or any other color you wanted - he's also a rep for House of Kolor).

:D :D thanks Ryan :tu: Might keep that in mind, I'm tossing around the idea of CW beauty rings now, hehe.

The beetle hubcaps.. might have been something I'd do with Indie, but probably wouldn't do with the Golf.. A little too round for the look I'm going for, I think it would take away from the sharpness of the car's lines.

Need your opinions though guys.. my steelies are only 15", do you think it'll look funny being such a small steelie with a ring on it? Mebbe a photochop? :hide: :D

Also, would it even be necessary to paint the rings Candy White? Would the flash of it be enough to disguise it?

Not only that but beetle/bus hubcaps mount in a COMPLETELY different way, it would take a lot of modification to the wheel or hubcap to make them work.

Or, as Steve suggested, portawalls instead.. :hmm:

Could be sexy.. would only put them on for stuff though, as I would with the beauty rings as well, so they don't get yucked up from my daily driving..

Opinions?

yeah porta whites are pretty sweet from 5 feet. ive heard that they sometimes flap and make noise while driving also. beetle hubcaps of course won't snap on but you can make em work.

or.. check out mooneyesusa.com they have lots of sweet old school caps, moons and mini moons! love that site! they also carry porta whites.

I won't be driving with them on unless I'm en route during a GTG or taking rolling shots

As for the close up.. are you able to see gap, do they not sit flush with the tire? I've heard both great and bad on these.

Portawalls are semi-permanent, as you have to deflate your tire, every time you want to take them on or off. and the more you fuck with em, the worse they're gonna look. I've seen some damn good looking portawalls on cars.

Do you see the gap between the portawhite and the sidewall on the rear tire?

The only person I knew who's rocked porta-whites (Sarge) ended up with a stack of 20 of them because he had so many issues. They would tear apart, then he tried to silicone them on, that pulled apart, then he used a rubber-based black-jack type adhesive and that still didn't work.. I thought it looked like more trouble that it's worth, still considering he even had a tire machine at work, just think if he didn't.

A good friend of mine has run them on his beetle for the past 5 years, they don't look bad, they sit flush with the tires, and aren't torn. Sarge must of had bad luck.

Youch that sounds like a nightmare.. I actually did not realize it required deflating the tire either.. That was part of the attractiveness of it over tires, mounting, balancing, and alignment.. heh.

OrangeDUB
06-04-2010, 01:09 PM
Yeah you have to deflate the tire and dismount the outer bead, then pop the portawhite on, and re-mount (and rebalance) the tire/wheel.

I was just sharing Sarge's experience with them. Also they look bad even from a distance in the beetle pictured.

As for ideas on wheel situation. I would buy some beauty lips since they are cheap. Then snap em on and if you don't like the polished look then you can always paint them later. Of couse the whole time you will solve you steelie wheel problem all while saving up for good tires and looking good while saving up.

Also I think the beauty lips will look just fine on 15in rims. ;)

I was thinking about getting a boot with white thread or adding it but I don't mind for now unless I get really weird about the interior later on. They have a GREAT deal on these right now through ECS tuning, highly suggest it to anyone wanting a simple cheap, enjoyable mod. The knob is so much better feeling than the OE Mk6 one.

Just a few questions here....where do you all get these Euro license plates (http://forums.projektgerman.com/showthread.php?8539-berserker-s-MkVI-Golf&p=114403&viewfull=1#post114403)? And are they legal in states that require front plates (like Iowa)? Oh, and how were you able to get the exemption on tinting? (I'm an avid fan of dark tinting AND I'm an optometry student, so this is interesting for me)

but I have a permanent card from my optometrist/Iowa DOT that permits me to legally have 35% in the fronts

Very nice....just read through this and it's awesome watching the transformation unfold! Keep the mods coming!

They are not technically legal (the front plates) but mine match my registered plates.. IE, my plate is 340MXU and they are issued from Wisconsin.. so I custom made my europlate to say WI-340MXU.. it presents all the information they need to do a plate search, it clearly designates state issued and number information. I have driven by cops since october running it like this, both in WI and IA.. and knock on wood haven't been stopped yet. Many looks, but never a second take or chase haha. Then again in Iowa, I can't get in trouble anyway as long as I'm running the Wisconsin plates (only until Nov :()

As for the tint, I went to my optometrist for an exam, and mentioned to him that I was having light sensitivity problems in the morning and afternoon when I would go to drive, it was uncomfortable to have my eyes even half open sometimes.. I asked him (already knowing of course) about tinting my car but didn't want to "get in trouble" as my friends "said I would". He smiled and told me to go get a card at the DOT, drop it off, and pick it up the next day.. the next day I had a permanent tint exemption card :tu: Keep in mind, these cards are only good for anything lighter than 35%. I'm actually a little over, I put 35% over my already slightly factory tinted windows.

Yeah, I could probably get away with it here in STL (bigger city and out of state plates), but I fear that merely driving through my hometown would be enough to get a ticket for it. I got a ticket there for 'washer lights of the improper color' in my old car...$28 ticket....and the stupid thing is that they were WHITE which is fucking legal! Then I got followed home by a different cop (they had to have been going well over 60 mph on a gravel road too, cause they were WAY behind me, but caught up and I was going 55) and got pulled over in my driveway and given a warning for the SAME THING in the same week. I put them on a switch after that....small town cops are bad news and it's just not worth it to break minor laws in my area. *end rant*

Small update to the car... Changed my priorities to paying the car off, and summer is already half over AND I am not going to be able to go to Dubs in the Valley even though I preregistered.. So no tires this year, the RS6 wheels will hold off until next year. I bought chrome beauty lips for the 15" steelies, and they're growing on me, even though at first I wasn't fond of them. I'll have pictures tomorrow!

Also, for whatever reason, I don't know, they never told me, I lost my oil drain plug somewhere on I-35/I-80 between Ames and Des Moines, and after the engine shut off (while I was in Merle Hay Mall at an eye exam) all the oil spilled out... a good 5some quarts of it.. :td:

Amusingly enough, and NOT amusingly enough, there were also two goldfish crackers inflated in the oil.

I was overall really dissatisfied with my service and how Volkswagen of America over all handled the situation. Roadside assistance did get a tow-truck arranged quickly, however I was left on my own for providing my own rental car :sly: I ended up having to walk (it was 90+ that day as well and I was already sick) to an Enterprise and handle the rental. My car was towed to Lithia, where everyone balked at doing anything. The following day, I had to contact Bergstrom VW over the matter who at first refused to cover any fault or claim even though they were the last who handled the oil change. When it came down to it, it was all over a simple $2.00 plug and accepting responsibility after everything that had happened. They paid for Lithia's service, an oil change more or less with a new plug. I am waiting reimbursement from VWOA for the 50 pounds of kitty litter I laid over the spill, the rental car, and gas during the ordeal. Overall really, really dissatisfied. :td:

As well, even though they were informed of needing hazardous waste disposal action with that much oil, VWOA nor Lithia made an attempt to clean the oil from the spill site. Ended up going back ourselves to clean and dispose of it before it could rain and wash into the sewers and systems. Nice to know they are worried about accountability during the current crisis we are already under in the gulf

Wow...that's just ridiculous, all around! On the bright side, at least the oil leaked out when your car was OFF and not driving! I'm sure some gas, kitty litter and a $2 oil plug sure beats a new engine! Pretty disappointing how the situation was treated, though. I wish you the best!

Whoever did the oil change is lucky your engine didn't fail.

Also I thought those were cat treats in the oil, they look exactly like Alan's crunch lover's delights.

Hmmm, that doesnt suprise me about the dealer not wanting to take responsibility for it, my uncle had his daughters oil changed at a dealer and 2 miles later the engine siezed, they put 5 quarts of brake fluid in the crankcase from an overhead auto fill gun, and refused to cover the damages. I find it hard to believe that the plug fell out on 35/80 and the oil didnt come out till the merle hay lot, if you were running down the interstate and you lost the plug, you wouldnt have had any oil in the case by the time you reached merle hay. Was there a trail of oil leading to the parking spot? If not, then there is something fishy going on.

Believe that the vacuum formed and PCV system kept the oil in until the engine was shut off.. (Pat could offer a better explanation than I :hide:) Because no, there was no oil drips at all, at first it was almost as if someone TOOK the plug while I was inside.. However my car is way too low to just do that, you can barely fit an arm under. My thoughts were the bolt was stripped, when I changed my suspension I notice a very small dribble of oil coming off the plug, and Loccust tightened it. I'm wondering if it was stripped out at the last oil change and very slowly untightened from that point, thread by thread.

That is wierd. I wouldnt think the amount of vacuum created in the crankcase through the pcv system would be enough to overcome that size of opening in the case. I guess all that matters is the engine wasnt damaged which is pretty amazing.
