So, My sister in law has a 97 Jetta with a 2.0. It keeps kicking on a cel. We took it up to autozone and they gave me 2 codes that it was throwing. The first one is P0172 and the second is P0442. I think both these codes are fuel system related but I'm not sure. I tried disconnecting the battery to reset the computer, but the cel comes right back on as soon as I start up the car. The car does run fine. It hasn't kicked into limp mode. I am not very familiar with MkIII's at all. Should disconnecting the battery clear the codes or do they need to be wiped? If anyone has any insight on these 2 codes, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

They couldn't tell you a definition for the code?

Hate to "toot my own horn" because I'm really not... but if you go to a local Advance auto parts and have the CEL tested, the code reader will give you a definition for the code that is found.

At least that way you can narrow it down. And its still a free check.

you would have to either fix the problem or use a vagcom to find out what the problem is and clear it . thats from what i heard..

P0172 This is familiar because it happend to me its the to rich code wich I used to get and it comes and goes until I got new plugs.

P0172= System to rich
p0442=Evaporative emission system leak

First code could be a few things. Fuel pressure regulator, dirty injectors, evap purge regulator valve ect. Since you got a second code for evap leak i would bet that the rich code comes from the second one.

Your evap canister is cracked or the evap purge ragulator valve is bad or leaking.

Thanks guys. They did give a definition with the two codes but they were very broad and mentioned the gas cap, fuel pump, injectors, o2 senser, as well as a few other possibilities. I thought one of you guys would be able to narrow it down better for me. You gave me a much better place to start than autozone. Thanks again.
