As some of you already know, I'm the guy from Dubuque, Iowa with the memory red 1997 Jetta GT: you can find pics of my car here: http://forums.projektgerman.com/showthread.php?t=8160

I've had the car for a little over 2 years now, and it's been great at times, but it's kinda starting to fall apart a little bit. It has the 2.0 ABA engine and produces quite a bit of power, considering its age and how many miles are on it. I don't make a shit ton of money, so I try to repair as much as I can on the car, but I like to think I keep the car in great condition for what I can do to it repair wise.

I'll give you a lovely rundown of the things I've had to replace/repair so far...

-front wheel bearing (driver side)
-oil pressure sensor
-front bumper (new bumper & painted) << my fault
-replaced exhaust with autotech 2.5" SS catback, OEM muffler was falling apart
-distributor cap/rotor/plugs/plug wires
-replaced battery with optima yellowtop
-new clutch at 146,xxx
-when i replaced clutch, needed new clutch cable as well
-few days ago replaced valve cover gasket
-rear brakes twice in one year, due to rusted e-brake cables
-sunroof motor didn't work when i got the car, replaced it

And here's the list of things I have YET to get done

-full H&R touring suspension kit (both rears are currently SHOT badly)
-samco sport coolant hoses (i have a leak on upper heater core hose)
-timing belt + water pump
-new side molding strips under doors
-new wheels + tires
-check engine light for "small exhaust leak" says VAG-COM
-replace parking brake cables

All in all it's been a pretty decent car, and the motor is like most people say about the 2.0 ABA, it's bulletproof, you can't break it, but everything surrounding it falls apart, one thing after another.

There's also a few quirks with the electrical system...

-Trunk light only works sometimes... when it wants to
-cruise control does not work... and i have no idea why, never fixed it because i only travel in city on short trips
-the best part of all, the alarm only arms from passenger side of the car... for example, if i get out, and i want to lock my car + arm the alarm, I have to do it from the passenger side, the driver side door works, but has NO effect on the alarm, which puzzles me...

but anyways... that's my 97 jetta gt, and I can't complain because the damn thing starts every day and takes me where i need to be :P

Cruise control probably doesn't work because of a bad c.c. module and you probably have a bad driver door latch mechanism is why the alarm won't arm from that side. Pretty common problems with the mk3's.
