Hello, recently I replaced my K03 with a K04-001 and replaced my vdo guages with new south ones. When i had my vdo guages the oil temp hovered around 210-220*F. However when I replaced my guages I noticed that my temp rose to 230*F. I wasn't too concerned because I couldn't see or feel any difference in the way the car performed. I did notice that around the coolant res. vac tube and the coolant elbow that goes into the block have, what looks like to be, crusted coolant around the edges, not too sure what that means. I don't know if the oil temp rise is related to this or not. However, Saturday it was around 90*F out and I decided to use my A/C. Less then 2 minutes later my oil temp climbed to 260*F before I saw it and turned off the car and A/C. Is 230*F oil temp normal for a 1.8T or could there be a reason for it to run that hot? Also why would my oil temp rise from 230-260 when my A/C turned on? I've never seen that happen before when I had my vdo guages. Would anyone know what could cause this, or know of a way to determine what's causing it? The main thing is the car doesn't feel different which worries me a bit since I don't know if its running properly or not at a higher oil temp. Thanks for any help :tu:

Why don't you swap in the stocker and see if it reads normal again? I think changing out the temp gauge may just be the difference and the oil temp is actually the same..

Well technically my car never had an oil temp guage, so there is no stock one to install. My families audi's always had an oil temp guage so I wanted that ability.
Edit: If I use my first guages as an example, those guages never went above 220*F. I could only think the new south guages must be a little more sensitive. However, that still doesn't account for the 30* climb when the a/c was on, and that I never saw that anytime before with the previous guages.

Hmm I see what the eff you did there. Not much experience in that dept so I guess I'm not any help past the gauge part. Good luck! :tu:

I'm just curious as to why it happened. If I can't find out why its doing that I'm just gonna get a radiator style oil cooler and remove my a/c.

Sounds like a good plan, regardless ;)

a/c does put more load on the engine hence the drop in gas mileage when running ac thats why i dont have it any more:D

Well oddly enough I've never seen a drop in mpg when the a/c was on, but that weight reduction would definitely help tho on the track :D

Must be teh gauge or something else. I have never seen my oil temp go over 240 even when i beat the hell out of my S4. Try swaping out the gauge with a diff one and see what happens 220 seems good and under normal driving conditions it shouldnt go up more. It could be the oil temp sending unit that's goin out to.

The may be the case but then how would that relate to the oil temp spike when the a/c was turned on? I would understand if the sender was going and wasn't giving a proper reading but I dont see how the a/c would affect oil temp and not anything else.

It maybe how you wired the gauge in or that may be normal for a 1.8t i would check out the 1.8t tech forum on vortex and take a look around i have had one of my vr6's go over 250 on multiple occasions but those typically run hot. Also did the temp rise the moment you turned the AC on then i would say wiring, if it took a bit of running with the AC then it may be accurate.

Well I just tried to get it to happen again over lunch and of course it doesn't do a thing. >.< Just sits at 230 during idle, turn on the a/c, oil pressure drops a few psi oil temp stays the same. kept it on for like 5 minutes and nothing happened. I followed the instructions on how to install the gauges and they pretty much match what my previous gauges read, but I also need to re wire every thing anyway so its easier to manage.
Edit:
Just found another post on vortex about a similar issue, his oil temp rose after he installed a fmic. his runs about 240*F but no one was able to give him a straight answer. I'm gonna say hell with it and just probably get an oil cooler and add it to my car, any suggestions? I also my just delete my entire a/c system while I'm at it. I just don't know how much work will require me to remove the evaporator from the interior...

i would not delete a working a/c system... i missed mine once i removed it from the vr6 but i only took it out because it was too expensive to repair. my passat fluxuated quite a bit... put on a cooler and see what happens...

Agreed my car i deleted it on is pretty much only a weekender and for shows. If you DD the car i wouldnt delete the AC it can get pretty annoying having to always rock windows down and also sucks in the rain. But then again I personally only ever use AC on road trips and highway jawnts.

So, I think I've found the reason for my unusually high oil temp....I may be using the wrong sender. :banghead: Scott from USRT told me it could be that the gauge is calibrated to the sender that came with the gauge, OrangeDUB you were on the right track. So i just got to wait for my dad to send me the sender, then I will have the glorious task of installing the new sender into the oil pan :sly: without doing an oil change :D

Or you could just wait till your next oil change, or buy enough oil to "top off" what you lose. Is the sender in your drain plug, tapped into the oil pan, or somewhere else?

:hmm: I woudl think the sender should be in the head

Technically the sender would be in the oil pump housing but since the temperature is hotter there the what the actual oil temp is, HS Tuning tapped the oil pan where the oil return is and installed it there. Well idk what i'm gonna do for my next oil change...I got a magnetic drain plug and I dont want VW mechanics stealing it. I may just wait till I come back out here to change the oil at Lichty's
