For the past week my car has been acting kind of weird. When i pull up to a red light and push in the clutch and don't put it into neutral and then let out the clutch, the car sits at 1800 RPMs for a second or two. does anyone know why it is doing this, tranny problem?

possibly MAF, coil packs maybe. couls be just a dirty throttle body also. i have the same problem, but i have a camshaft sensor acting up. is it a vr6? if so, i would check the coils first

Try cleaning the MAF and TB.

I think it is a VR6 if I remember from the pics. Check the coil packs as mentioned and when was the last time routine maintenance was done?

vacuum leak(s)?

so its idling high when the clutch is in and it is in gear? Does it come down to proper idle range after a bit?

I dont think its the coilpacks... when those go bad its usually a much worse situation...

John's right, if it were a coil/plug/tb/maf issue then you'd be having more problems, like during WOT and even regular driving. Is there a BISS or an idle adjustment screw on these cars? It was a pretty common problem for the o-ring on those to go out on DSMs and we'd have those same types of problems...which would basically just put your problem in the vacuum/boost leak category.

if your MAF was screwing up, your O2 sensor would be throwing a CEL and either throwing in too much fuel or not enough, it would not effect idle like this or even to this extent. Coil packs would normally just cause you to misfire, really the only two things that can cause a car to do this would be an IAC or a slightly sticking throttle body, IAC being the more likely of the two. I'm not huge on VWs so some of my information may not cross correctly here but typically most cars have an Idle Air Control valve and what that does is, it actually opens up allowing more air into your engine when your foot is off the gas which makes it easier for most people to rev match and shift correctly. It will also open up when you start to turn your steering wheel alot to bring RPMs back up due to extra drag the power steering pump is causing, and also when your A/C compressor kicks on. 80% of the cars I deal with that has this sort of problem generally has this valve sticking.

I'm kinda thinking it's not the throttle body simply because if it was sticking, normally on a cold start, you would have an idle surge. Although this isn't the case all the time, normally this is why you see in a sticking throttle body.

I would suggest to look into if your car has this Idle Air Control valve and if it does, remove it, clean it up with some green can brake clean, replace the gasket and torque it back down.

Edit : I'm also going to rule out a boost/vac leak for the most part simply because, your car is a MAF design, meaning if you were to have a leak, it would be a surge, if you had a MAP sensor, then it would hang, but typically it wouldn't just hang for a few seconds and then go back to normal.

But all in all, I need to know what you're actually driving because I'm going off of my knowledge of a B5+

Kook is probably on it...sounds like the IACV is sticking a little...remove clean (I always use carb cleaner) and reinstall

Hey guys my dad and i figured out the problem last night. its when we are going to take off and then i have to stop suddenly. the car thinks were going to go so it pours in some extra fuel which make the RPMs stay high for a second or two. we also found that the trottle cable was stuck weird so it would get hung up. i didnt have a single problem this morning on my way to school so i think we got it fixed.
