Just got done putting GM Synchromesh in my car. I have noticed a few things...

1-2 shift smoothed out
3-2 shift is MUCH smoother
2-1 is better as well...

Overall I think shifting is better. Was it noticeable? It sure was, especially with the small bit of city driving I did.

Interestingly enough the Castrol Syntec 75w90 (GL5) came out a VERY brown color, and wasn't clear - it was opaque. Pretty surprising seeing as how it didn't have more than 7k on it.

Now all I need for butter smooth, percise shifts is to adjust my short shifter.

The castrol was a GL5 lubricant. GL5 stuff likes to eat yellow metals in the synchros. Since it was the wrong stuff in there I thought I would just put it in the rear diff. When I saw what color the stuff was after only a few thousand I'm just going to throw it out.

Also, my 1-2 shift cold was sometimes really tough. 3-2 was a little difficult too.

Audi claims it's a lifetime fluid however their idea of lifetime is 100k.

I'm gonna be doing my tip trans and all gearboxes soon though... all OEM Audi fluids or *maybe* Redline.

I think the lifetime bit only applies to automatic transmissions - hench the 100k lifetime.

Do some research on the vortex, the zine and audiworld. Redline is good stuff. I've read raves about synchromesh too so I tried it.

I've done plenty of research, there's a lot of compatible fluids out there :tu:
