Well I think I am keeping my wheels for this season... no interest and I like them anyways. So...

Anyways I spent some hours working on it tonight. There is a lot of sand everywhere. It was annoying...

Took the driver's side axle off as I suspect it is the cause of a bad bad vibration. It seems to be solid though so we will see if replacing it fixes my problem.

Also found my dogbone bushings in bad shape. Upgrading to poly..

I cant see the axle causing the vibrations. That would be caused by the bushings and tie-rods. Even possible wheel out of balance..

Thanks Blake I owe you some of these

Got the driver's side axle replaced, and it WAS the culprit of the vibration! An aftermarket one was replaced... lasted about a year (1-2 months after I was low)

I also got a set of adjustable end links but I can't use them. Maybe I'm retarded but even fully collapsed they were too long to install :screwy:

Next to do:

-Fix exhaust leak.... obx headers :banghead: no biggie at least.

-Finish body work

-Paint

Here are the endlinks that I couldn't get in. Is there a trick to it??

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r150/OrangeDUBBA/IMG_0226.jpg

Ooh what mean hardware did I stumble across??

Removed the front swaybar today

Also we stiffened the rebound on my right rear shock (yay not so much rubbingggggg!) :hump:

It still feels liek my driver's side axle is binding when I corner right (ie, interstate loops, the funnest place to take corners fast) :(

I'm out of ideas for the front- I thought the vibration was my axle hitting the swaybnar but with the swaybar out is still doing the same thing.

I am going to check into it on vortex. I might have to either raise the front coilovers a bit or buy raxles (almost $1k)

Any advice? Kevin?? Need help/guidance!! :(

does the front end vibration change with speed? it could be any thing from a bent/ out of balance wheel to a warped brake rotor. also could be a wheel bearing. or some thing crazy like a motor mount or subframe out of alignment.

Also i dont think buying raxel will fix any kind of binding problem casey youll need to notch the frame horn or what ever you wanna call it since its a uni body. a large hammer would give you some room between the axel and body as well

I started a thread on vortex and got a big mix of smart advice and dumb advice. http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=4293078&postid=56058414#56058414

Around corners yes; driving straight, none whatsoever.

Wheels are "straight as hell" -Sarge on wheel balancer

Wheel bearing/front wheels out of alignment are my next 2 ideas...

Raxle makes shorter axles so they don't bind up, but that is a last resort. If it's out of alignment or needs new bearings up front those will get replaced first. I don't think I'm hitting the frame...

I didn't read everything here, but take it from me, if your drivers side axle clicked ever, its junk. And when that happens it will cause a viberation. I went through two drivers side axles before i went with an Raxle after I lowered my car. A month with the Raxle and 2k miles and no problems yet! i bet any money you are not hitting the frame on the driver's side. you gotta be layin pan to have to notch the frame on a mkIV.

FYI i know secrets of stronger inboard cv joints.
but you have to run an empi axle.
it's a chomoly caged CV technically used for lifted aircooleds or sandrails.

if anyone is running an empi axle with 100mm inner CV and wants the part number i can give it to you.. they run about 50 each though.

Been over a year, I am ashamed. I haven't done much lately since buying a mk3, and getting the rabbit back on it's feet.

This car is gonna be in DIV on Aug 7th so I have a lot to do.

-Just got 3" SS mandrel exhaust installed by Joe @ DPI Store. TOP NOTCH WORK AND IT SOUNDS AMAZAZAZAZING!!! :tu:
-Removed the entire rear seat. Do like.

Here's my laundry list of items to complete in the next 4 weeks
-Paint mirrors black
-Fill/shave and prime-match rear R32 bumper
-Prime-match and install R32 skirts
-Prime-match side rubstrips & fill/smooth & match front rubstrip
-Install 1" Euro Image motor mount spacer kit
-probably replace axles
-Replace hood release cable
-Install badgeless grille
-Fill hood notch & smooth hood
-Install Yarrowsport rear stress bar
-Smoke laminex headlights
-Pull driver's side rear fender a lil more
-Replace all brake pads & rotors

Well that's all I can think of.

Here's me this morning

To answer your question... yes. Joe is currently adapting a GTP supercharger to a 2.5 inline 6 BMW, it's quite the work of art.

But yea, Joe does do great work which is why I'll end up having him custom make an air cleaner assembly for the W8.

Yip yip yip!!!

Spent the last 2 weekends at Andy's shop working on this car. Got the axle thing pretty much figured out and I owe Andy about 5 axles I think. The car now has 100mm MK4 TDI flanges/cups, a pass side TDI MK4 axle and a shortened MK3 VR6 drivers side axle. It works, although the passenger side axle needs shortened about 1/2" to be perfect. Any pix of the axle stuff guys? I was so dirty I didn't snap any. Big big thanks to Andy and Anthony for fabbing stuff up while I worked and big thanks to Andy for use of his shop! Good times.

I also replaced the crappy projector headlights I had on it. For now, I have Joey modded lights. I had to buff the lenses but they turned out fr what I had to work with *ok*

Post-bake. Yellow poopiness.

I drove the car to work today which was the first time in over a year so that was cool!

More progress this week. I'm buying a set of 17" Audi TT wheels from Blake.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r150/OrangeDUBBA/9e252ce3.jpg

Here's a chop Jason did, but I forgot to tell him they are 17's and he masked them over my 18's from the original pic, so they look a little bigger than they really will. It gives you an idea of the look tho.

Why did it need new axles?

The old ones are tripod style and with as much low as I have it was binding them up and destroying them in 100-200 miles. Ask anyone :D

It's not normal.... it might be partially due to the fact that it's a prior salvage vehicle, but the subframe is straight, so who knows... I've replaced the axles (mostly driver's side) so many times I could literally do it in an hour with my eyes closed now.

Shit pushing snow bumper w/ GLI lip, Joey-modded headlights, plenty of zip ties, 17" Audi TT wheels, 5mm front spacers & 15mm rears, raised the front coils ~3/4".

The twists are forever off the car (about time) and It's got MK4 TDI axles for now but will need to shorten them, or the other axle(s) we've cut up and then swap.

I can't believe how much better the Koni coilovers ride after raising just the front up 3/4". I feel stupid for bottoming them out from day 1.

I'm guessing the twists are 5x114.3 right? Know what the stock offset is? Wish i still around there to give those a test fit...

It'd definitely be less work going back to stock. And I did like the Tropic Orange too...it's a rare color is it not?

Too far of a drive by myself. Once was enough for me. Driving to VA was bad enough and that was only 7 hours. I learned the hard way that my mortal enemies are now lane markers.

Boo. I would need adapters and that would kick them out too far.

Boo. I would need adapters and that would kick them out too far.

Actually the adapters make the offsets friendly for FWD. front is ET 52 and rear is ET 45 I think?

Loud&Clear
12-13-2011, 09:02 PM
fronts would be good since they're only 8 inch wide. Rears are a little bit more difficult since they're 10.5 inch wide. Paring the 45et with a 15mm adapter would sit it at 30et and i'm pretty sure there isnt any way that 30et 10.5 wide wheel is going to fit under a stock mk5 fender, let alone a balls to the floor setup.

I'm currently running 8.5 et30 in the back, and a 10.5 et30 would mean the wheels would stick out another ~1 inch. No way that'll fit on mine. I'd need like an offset of like 50 with adapters to get it in the safe-ish zone on fender contact.

You should make Rob or someone with a Mk5/6 come over and throw a rear wheel on to prove it though ;)

Lookin' good! Digging the wheels and the GLI lip. As far as colors go, I was gonna say flat black would be tight with some red touches here/there, but Montana Green sounds pretty sick (possibly better). MG is def a sick color.

Might have to make that happen...

Thanks yeah flat black usually looks great but is too common for my personal taste.

Honestly I'm looking back at pix of other shiny tropic oranges and the color isn't that cool!!!!! I like satin paints way too much. (not primer )

I like hotrod flatz copper pearl:

Also to update actual progress my autotech chip went bad and am rocking the stock one for now. Talked to autotech and if I can produce a purchase receipt (from 2006/2007) then they should be able to replace it.

Possibly. I'll find out when I cold start it after work tonight. The good thing is that now at least it will allow itself to be scanned so I an finally figure out what's making it run shitty. Or maybe the ecu is the problem all along.

Well Andy scanned my car last night and didn't show much wrong electrically. It runs poor before operating temp but great once at tmep. Coilpack is gonna get replaced.

Made some use of the nice weather today and did the "5th brake light mod" which was so easy I don't know why I didn't do it until now.

Also finally got around to installing a 2003+ center console I bought from that has 3 cup holders built into it! WIN.

For sure:
-paint-matched roof (not black)
-shaved bumper rubstrips
-mildly shaved engine bay
-shaved/filled rear euro R32 bumper
-R32 sideskirts

not sure about:
-front lip. Might do GLI or might keep it reiger.
-keep the fenders pulled/stretched or go back to stock looking arches. I like the smooth pulled look....
-shave side rubs?

WHITE!

Also, leave the fenders if they are pulled and smooth. If you staying with the "show car" theme and are not going to be letting it get door dings and such, shave the rubs.

That's a good point about the rubs. I drive my cars, but would prolly park away from people....
