So I got sick of the front plate and wanted to change up my shield alittle
anyway here are the steps I took in the process.
remove shield, four torx screws and a couple clips
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa288/07GTI/DSC_0010.jpg
you then need to hammer out the plastic pegs holding the plate holder on you can see the holes around the frame
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa288/07GTI/DSC_0014.jpg
the four pegs removed and plate frame off
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa288/07GTI/DSC_0015.jpg
four holes left from the peg removal
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa288/07GTI/DSC_0016.jpg
I then decided to remove the red stripe so I wouldn't damage it sanding and painting would be easier
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa288/07GTI/DSC_0017-1.jpg
I used my finger nails to pry the two clips apart and then from the other side pried up the red stripe
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa288/07GTI/DSC_0019.jpg
Red strip removed
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa288/07GTI/DSC_0020.jpg
sanded down the shield for filler and paint
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa288/07GTI/DSC_0021.jpg
sorry no pics of the filler going in, but its a two part epoxy that when mixed hardens to a plastic like state. I put a screen on the back of the holes to minimize the epoxy pushing through. This all came in the kit.
Also didn't get any pics of the painting process, but I used Plasti Dip paint for a flat semi textured look. I did one coat and it looked funny and had a big glob of paint so I stripped it all off, comes off like dead skin after a sunburn :D. then started all over and did about 5 coats.
anyway here is after paint and red stripe reinstall, just snaps back in.

reinstall

hood closed job finished
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa288/07GTI/DSC_0024.jpg
very pleased with the outcome, only cost about $12 for paint and epoxy.

do you plan to get it matched to the rest of the car?
07GTI
06-05-2009, 05:03 PM
nope, I like the look of it being not matched, every other MKV color still has a black shield so the only car it doesn't stand out on is the BMP so this makes it pop a bit more

that is exactly what i want to do over my chrome grill. where did you find the plasti-dip? also, how fine did you go on the sandpaper?
looks great!
07GTI
12-29-2009, 06:38 PM
I got the plasti-dip at Lowes, and I only sanded it cause I needed to fill the holes if you don't need to do that, no need to sand before plasti-dip it sticks to smooth surfaces. But if you are sanding I used pretty fine sand paper, I'll have to look in the garage to see what I used for sure though. I'll post it up once I find it :D

I havent decided if i want to paint the VW emblem. its looks pretty awesome floating there in all that black now. :)

Looks good, so far mines been holding up pretty well in the snow this winter so we'll see what it looks like after :D only thing i've noticed is when I wash my car I get fuzz from the wash mitt stuck to the plasti-dip part but some masking tape pulls it right off :) (thanks for the suggestion Mike)
