did you say shaved side moldings?
you lost me there.
i have never ever ever once seen that look good on any mk3.. even high dollar german showcars look bad with that.
and how are you going to put a rear lip on a bumper that doesn't have one?
it's attached to the bumper.
sounds like you've got some solid plans otherwise though.
very, very good call on DSR 256's.

I really didn't think about the shaved moldings much, but after seeing this pic of the jetta with shaved moldings, it does look a little weird. Especially with the bumper lines and then alot of nothing on the doors. Better do alot of research to make sure you will like it when it is done.

on the lip i know its not removable i am thinking a different rear skirt and im not 100% on shaving the side moldings i could maybe be talked out of that because that jetta kinda looks like poo and it would kinda destroy the lines

Well friday i pulled the motor, trans and other related accesories. I also installed the resevoir for the a/w setup were the ac dryer and charcoal canister used to be thanks for the help cody. I decided that i am going to relocate the power steering reservoir to right in front of the windshield washer tank and i am going to relocate the battery to the hatch i believe to give me more room for the a/w intercooler. I also think i am going to move the harness and grounds from under the batter tray to under the frame rail to make it look a bit cleaner in their. On friday i ordered new rocker panels and decided not to shave the side molding recess as if i do that and i dont like the results i cant just undo it. And we got some hatch shaving progress as well thanks for the help daniel.

Well got a bit done recently we filled the license plate tub as well as the emblem recess. Removed front fenders to get ready for the new rocker panels. We started on the audio system by fiberglassing the spare tire recess in the trunk and re routed the wiring for the battery relocation. We also mounted the boost gauge but im not so sure its going to stay their cause i just ordered a wideband. The ups man came and brought me a bunch of goodies today as well.

The plan is to have the car done for eurowerks but recently i decided to go with standalone and a 3" side exit turbo back exhaust instead of the c2 stage 4 tune and a kinetic 3" downpipe so more work is needed and im not exactly sure it will be done in time i hope it will be

Well we made some more progress today i sanded down the kitty hair a bunch and troy got some more work done to the custom sub enclosure in the trunk. We used resin to apply the 3/4 inch mdf slab to the fiberglass and then kitty haired around the outside to seal it up even better

What are the plans for the amp(s)?
We have yet to deciced 100% we are building false walls on both sides of the hatch area and are considering mounting them their or in front of where the sub will go towards the hatch opening. If we mount them up front like the original plan then we probly should have left a bunch more of the mdf up their.... i dunno plan is to figure it out tomorrow and get them mounted.
OrangeDUB
06-04-2009, 12:39 AM
false floor would most likely be the easiest choice. My favorite look is a board with the amps and everything mounted, wires routed, etc and then a carpeted floor so the wiring is hidden and the amps are flush.
Keep up the progress man this car is gonna be wicked when you're done!

Well made some more progress today we framed up around the sub enclosure and then mounted the board the amps will be mounted to also dan welded in some of the holes that were in the frame rails. We also realized the rust on the passenger side strut tower is a little worse then we thought so some work will be needed.
Sub box framing

http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu232/Dubstuning/P1040413.jpg
The wires tucked away on the drivers frame rail a little crude to hide them but i feel it looks better then stock their is one wire loom that will stay out which goes to the starter and other wiring on the front of the motor.

I decided we are going to strip off the seam sealer on the strut towers and rails partially cause i was worried about more rust underneath and guess what i found some more surface rust lurking. Also troy made a bunch of progress on the hatch area got the holes cut for the amps and some trim pieces we are also going to flush mount the crossovers. I also shaved the handle recess and dropped off the black door, hatch and red fender to have the jams painted.

question, the holes where the door handles were, the license plate and stuff. Is that all filler or did you weld anything in? Also, you're not worried about putting Dynamat or Second Skin down in the trunk before you build any of that? Personally it would have been the first thing on my mind.

Actually the current setup isnt as heavy as you would think everything but the top board the sub is mounted to is 1/2 inch mdf not 3/4 which is quite a bit lighter than 3/4. The rest of the actual sub enclosure is made of fiberglass and is pretty damn light. I plan on weighing everything on a digital freight scale the owner of my building has than i will know exactly what it is. The only lighter material we could use would be fiberglass instead of the mdf and it would take alot more time to construct.

Yea actually i agree dynamat isnt nearly as good as cascade. We didnt have enough space in the spare tire well to mount the sub the other way if we changed some stuff now we could make it work but its already pretty much set up this way and we have enough left to do on the car to go changing the hatch setup.

Pearl got my transmission painted, cody painted some of the interior pieces today, Dan welded the hood extension on a couple days ago, Troy is vinyling the stuff from the hatch tomorrow and has almost all the wiring done, and I went down and picked up the blacked out headliner and sunroof thing. More to come along with pics.

Also no euro core support so its either modify mine for the mk4 look lights or roll with stock.

Here is a little progress troy got the hatch mostly done, i got the euro core support in, air to water radiator in, front rebar in, and i took it on a couple test drives yesterday. No boost and it still hauls! Today i will get the hoses for the air to water all hooked up and the pumps wired as well as the headlights wired in and the bumper mounted and maybe if im lucky i can pick up the fenders next door and get a good drive out of it. To make everything comlete in the engine bay i need to order a 4" 45degree elbow, and a couple 3" and 2.5" to 3" transition hoses with a nipple to get rid of the bov and replace it with a diverter valve. Also we need to make mounts for the mass air flow and air to water intercooler.

Well we made some progress Troy wired up the front lights but got a couple wires mixed up so we gotta fix that. We sprayed cascade sound deadening material on the whole rear half of the car as well as inside the hatch and inside the doors. Im gonna route all the hoses and hook up the pumps for the air to water today and troy also wired up the relay and mounted the walbro gsl 392 and im gonna run the short length's of hose today. Also the hatch came back from next door from having the remaining blemishes fixed. The whole interior will get put together today and i should have the hood back from paint tomorrow night. Also we are doin the exhaust between today and tomorrow and the car should be ready to rock and roll on saturday.

I brought the exhaust up closer to the body of the car we also fixed the starter wire and we had a power window problem that we fixed. Once all this is done the body will go over to the shop next door and we will hopefully have time to get the new rockers on and get the rest of the dings in the body filled and the rest painted. Actually they make rod bolts that are one level stronger but i think it was my own fault i didnt re torque the studs right away i forgot about it then did it at like 300 miles and cylinder number 1 is my bitch just pulled all the plugs and she is soaking wet with coolant so now to figure out if its the gasket (hopefully) or the head
OrangeDUB
08-21-2009, 02:17 PM

08-24-2009, 03:34 PM
Well i found my bitch today not sure why it happened though. My only thought is i didnt retorque the head till about 300 miles so it could have started seeping maybe then finally went out. Plan is to throw a new head gasket in and let it get hot without coolant to help it seat better then let her cool and add coolant and give it a shot again. If that doesnt work then who knows pull it back apart i guess.

1000 plus paypal shipped
I never understood why sellers charge buyers the PayPal transaction fee. To me that just turns off potential buyers. If you're not willing to absorb that, you shouldn't use PayPal. If you're so concerned about the fee, ask a little more than what you're willing to take for something you're selling. Sorry for the OT man, that just irritates me. :D
But I do dig those wheels, they'd set off the mk3 perfectly. I'm a sucker for BBS wheels! :tu:

I had a head gasket go out in a similar manner between cylinders in a high compression engine, and that also turned out to be an improperly torqued head bolt. It also went straight to the smallest sealing area, which it looks like what also happened in your case.
Torque wrench calibration check isn't a bad thing either.:tu:

I have a brand new snap on digital torque wrench so its probly not the calibration more likely the fact i didnt retorque soon enough which is completely my own fault:banghead: their were like 3 that needed some more torque once i finally did it then like 2 drives later the headgasket went out. Ill find out what happens after this gasket if their is still a problem then ill go from their i guess.

If i cant make the fronts work i may try and get different front lips and if they dont make them possibly custom ones or i can just rock these on the mk4.

Well since ive had the car running ive noticed im not hitting boost as early as i should and my straight wastegate dump is always loud not just when the wastegate is open so i though something was wrong with the wastegate and took it off. Low and behold their is a portion missing from my wastegate so its not sealing properly. I went to a buddys shop and got another tial 38 and am gonna put that on and it should be running even better than before.
The one on the left is the new (used) one from my buddies shop and the one on the right is my old one. Notice anything different???

That sounds right but it being gone caused my wastegate to basically always be slightly open cause it wont seal without it. I took her for a drive and it sounds way better the exhaust isnt leaking insanely out of the wastegate dump and it spools up quite a bit faster its way more driveable. Now i just want my catch can and the rest of the exhaust stuff to route the wategate into the dp instead of a straight dump.

one of my water pumps on the a/w setup i believe failed on me causing high intake temps also a plug went and i believe i need to use my bigger meth nozzle with a 60/40 mix of methanol for a higher octane yet. Also i may possibly build another short block with 8:1 pistons and use this block for my corrado and supercharge it. i really wont know 100% till i pull it apart on monday or tuesday then i will know if its detonation or a combo of the other problems. Rears are gonna fit awesome just have to roll the fenders probably. The fronts on the other hand arent going to be as forgiving im gonna have to shave off some of the caliper and roll probably pull the fenders. I was looking and i think if i actually go with the TT brake upgrade that it may push the calipers out to a point that i may not have to grind a bunch off. But anyways yeah for probably having to paint the fenders again!! Edit: I also had to get some tuner lugs and hubcentric rings. I will have to loose the wheels studs but ill just put those on a different car or sell em.
Some fitment pics i guess depending on how low i go will depend if i have to just roll em or pull em

So i just got the head pulled off and im not to happy!! It was not a hole in the piston as i thought (hoped). I must have been seeing a reflection in the cylinder wall of the busted exhaust valve boooo. So looks like a stock head is in my future(temporarily of course) also it looks as though either the pieces of the valves or detonation damaged that piston as well but i havent pulled it yet to see the full extent. I took a look at the turbo and it doesnt appear damaged but i didnt pull it apart so well see.

Yea i am really contemplating standalone now i know i will get more power and it will make me feel better about everything having a tune specific to my needs. I dont want it to sounds like im blaming the tune im sure it was probly the failure of the a/w pump, not having enough meth, and having the straight wastegate dump that also had something to do with it. They also say that if you arent getting enough fuel under boost to use an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and bump it up. That will be my next route until i can go to stand alone with a different downpipe and maybe the AFI tubular manifold and a 44mm wastegate.

Some things i got done...
I picked up the cylinder head from the machinist and apparently the original work that was performed was crap and the head may have been a source of all my problems. None of the seats were actually round, the spacers for the seats were the wrong ones, the valve guide seals were messed up when they were installed and to top all that off the head wasnt decked properly and was probly the source of my blown head gasket. All is well now the head is good to go so no more problems will arise in that department (i hope) and my machinist said with the ferrea springs i have in the head i should be good to set the redline at about 8.5k. Also the new piston is balanced and ready to be installed.
Pulled all the old stock fuel line in preparation for larger braided lines.
All new gaskets are in for motor reassembly.
One of the 044 fuel pumps is in.
Ive done some thinking and have decided to upgrade some other things on the car well im in their.
Upgraded JE wrist pins instead of the ones that come with the pistons
ARP flywheel bolts
New billet flywheel that will be closer to stock weight so it doesnt fall off as much on the 1-2 shift.
Flipside customs reinforced shift fork.
Manual steering conversion.
Probly axing the idea of bags and going with some K sports.
Calico coated main and rod bearings as the coated rod bearings i got from 034 dont appear to be as good of bearings as the calico ones i got through integrated for a customers build.
Down sizing the stereo not sure how yet?
Also I may remove the abs to get rid of some of the crap in the engine compartment.
Ill throw up some pictures of the progress made and parts that have gotten here later tonight.

Yea well see what happens right now i got a price on the syncro pieces for a syncro/haldex swap and if i go that route the S4 will stay an S4 just maybe a stage 3 S4. As the big thing is i want awd to compliment the bad ass motor i built and will have it one way or another.

So i priced pretty much everything for the syncro/haldex swap and its looking like about 3600 without modding the front drive shafts and no clutch so realistically i am probably looking at like 5 or 6 grand to go syncro/haldex or if i wanna swap the motor into the S4 its likely more like 10k im leaning more towards the syncro haldex swap and keeping the S4 the way it is till the turbos go and then going stage 3 on that as a daily driving car along with my raddo
Edit: All of this is obviously without all the fab work involved and a rough estimate on cost.

Standalone with custom harness, injectors, 2nd 044 fuel pump are all on their way. Manual steering rack swap and flipside clutch lever dealio is in but it sounds like i may not need it i believe i found an r32 trans today on the cheapish. Pictures to come.....

I hope you have read up on the AWD. You will need the abs module in case you didn't know. The AWD is tied in with the abs. The trans will need a modified front mount and needs a fabricated side mount. As long as you align the rear end right you should be ok there. I have seen the center shaft long enough in a mk3 jetta but not sure if they had the rear end exactly center or not. The front shafts will suck as you mentioned. The rear calipers are a little different if you go with the mk4 but you can get a line to adapt them. I have not thought about the ebrake cables at this point.

I know exactly what needs to be done to my car to convert to awd (aside from a few things im sure i will run into) i wont be needing the abs module as i am going to use a standalone controller from the uk or if i can get one from yellowslc than i will. I already knew about the front mount and trans mount. Also i am not going to run into as many things that need fabbing as i am converting the rear to syncro which is nearly a direct bolt in the major fab work is gonna be the front mounts which i will probly just buy pre made and converting the syncro beam to hold the haldex differential which i could also just buy but probly wont. Im also pretty sure that i will be contacting A1cvtech for front and maybe rear axles. DM motorsports also makes a set of axle shafts minus cv's which are a direct fit for the haldex/syncro swap. Also gonna have to cut out the spare tire well and run a fuel cell and surge tank. I have spent a massive amount of time cruising every awd build thread on the tex and spent alot of time in the haldex syncro quattro forum.
Also standalone came in today whoo hooo gonna snap some pics later

Where did you find a haldex standalone? Last I looked they stopped making them. Also the shift box for the R trans if you use it does not bolt right in but its not hard to make it work. I am sure you knew that to but just thought I would give you info to make sure you are ready for it. I have no doubt that you can pull it off. I have seen a few people on vortex attempt it in a mk3 and for some reason fail. I have a seen a corrado built with a syncro setup modified to hold a haldex. Also shafts wont be too bad if you have money to buy some. You can get the measurements and have some made to bolt in. There should be enough room to run the center shaft but not sure how well it will fit with a large exhaust. Should be fun :)

They are still making haldex standalone in the uk its a bit pricey though if not used ones pop up from time to time on the tex but also command a decent price I will make something work as i am not wiring it into the abs. Yea i realize the shift box doesnt bolt up directly but im not for seeing great difficulty their. I dont throw in the towel on stuff I shall have an awd mk3 no matter how much work it takes :). Here are some pics of the standalone that got here today guys. http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu232/Dubstuning/P1050217.jpg

John i feel your pain on the pulling the harness i just got mine out of the mk3 in preparation for my harness for my standalone and it was kinda a pain in the ass just kinda annoying. Now i get the pleasure of figuring out all the wires i am eliminating im also going to eliminate everything for the abs i believe. Pulled the dash too as i am going to be putting in a mk3.5 cabrio dimpled dash and possibly cluster not sure if the cluster is gonna work though as i think the inputs are different. Pics to come later tonight.
