View Full Version : Saab Tranny: A Slave Cylinder Story

Well it all started last year when I replaced my clutch master cylinder. I was told that once the master cylinder goes the slave is soon to follow. Anyway I replaced the master cylinder and went about my business for a month or so untell one day I notice the brake fluid light on (yes there is an actual brake fluid light, lol). So I added more brake fluid and inspected all the brake lines and the line going to the tranny. No sign of leaks I just thought that maybe it wasn't topped off completely from bleeding the line. Kept driving it and a month or so later the light came on again. Knowing that something was up I added more brake fluid and drove for a bit more just to last me tell the end of the driving season. Well now that it's warm I've busted the Saab out again. Knowing of the problem still I drove to CF to get the car detailed and by time I made it to Kevins shop the clutch was slipping (only when hot with hot weather) I drive it back to the QC and inspect it the next week. Thankfully with the way the Saab engine and tranny are designed I can take the entire clutch and slave cylinder out from the front (yes the front) of the car without ever having to get under the car or jack up the car OR remove any tranny bolts. Here's the whole process that I had to do in order the get the cover off the clutch and slave cylinder to inspect them. I put it all back togeather after these pictures and drove it back to storage untell I get all the parts I need. Once I get all the parts I will take lots of pictures of the whole process for all ya guys to see. Anyway enjoy for now and keep watching for more updates in the next week or so.

Nice! Now you can start installing brake lines on everyone's car. When do you plan on tackling this project?

Well there hasn't been much of any interest on this thread so far... so lets see if this does anything to spark some interest.
A shiney resurfaced flywheel with a new pilot bearing. Hopefully she will be going back together tomorrow night after work.

Nope had a machine shop do it here locally. They had it done for me in a few hours. Which was way faster then I thought it was gunna take.

Yeah I know but like you said it's really easy to do. Probably one of the easiest clutch jobs I've done.
Well hopefully everything will be goin back on tonight so I can get to driving this thing by this weekend. Keep an eye on this thread because I will have more pictures of reasembley later on.

Well she is basically all done. Just need to put the hood back on. The battery was very low so I had to jump it but I moved it back and forth a few inches in the garage (there were vehicles parked behind it) So it does move under it's own power so thats good. :D I just threw a charger on it and cleaned up my mess so once the battery is charged I will throw the hood back on and take her for a spin. Here some pictures of reassembly.
Resurfaced flywheel looking all pretty.

Clutch and slave cylinder back together and about to start bleeding the clutch. Getting that all back in there was NOT as easy as it was taking it out. It was a HUGE PITA!

Anthony inspecting the brake fluid bottle as I was bleeding the brakes. Power bleeder was a HUGE help.
