There are sometimes I think we need to thin the heard of cars. Most likely would be to sell the '98 Passat or the '99 Passat. It is kind of amusing but they both appraise at about $3k private on Edmunds.

'98 1.8T, Tip
Good
150k miles or so.
Original Leather Interior
When we bought it the headlights had those clear plastic protectors so they look new (I took them off)
Someone chipped it....quicker than the stock '99
Legal tint all round.
Cruise and ABS work!
Bad
We are 3rd owners (Bought with 135k) When we bought it it had a couple of the J-Teams stickers in the window.
It had a door latch from hell that I fixed, then the electric demons really went wild and it would open it's sunroof randomly (Driving or otherwise). I traced it to a bad connected in the sunroof switch...fixed
I've replaced BOTh fron window regulators .....plastic parts
I think it needs struts AND motor mounts (Drive train sloppy)
A non-VW person serviced the auto preior to us owning it (J-Team)?

'99 1.8t Tip (I owned this one since "birth")
Good
New Used turbo
Gets 32 - 33 on the HWY
Electric front leather seats and leather back seats (Salvage yard in TX)
Replaced struts around 120 or 140k so their actually pretty good yet
Legal Tint all around
New tires
W8 sunroof console
Handles better than '98
I know it's history

Bad:
Headlights marginal even with polishing
cloth door inserts (read lint brush)
Not chipped - I'm too cheap
Burns about 1 qt per 5k oil change
PS fluid disappears very slowly
Kevin has done the timing belt, water pump replacement - not sure about '98
ABS intermittant (Was repaired over 100k ago)
Cruise stopped working again - I had it repaired when it had 80k miles.

I'm kind of tempted to create a frankenstein - Move the headlight lights, ABS, Cruise, door cards, armrest cover AND ECU from '98 to '99 and then put the old '99 parts into Blue and just sell if for whatever I can get.

Not sure - the above looks like a lot of work.

Comments/ideas?

Swap the headlights and ECU and voila, keep the '99 and dump the '98.

I think Frankenstein wins. Thenn I'll probably sell the blue one with some non-functioning things like cruise, etc. When I had the 89 and 90 Jetta's to get rid of I ended up selling them both to a couple of nice families that work out at IBP or whatever it is called these days.

Actually nice daily, I may take it to KC next week to stretch it's legs. Drove it home from Ankeny after I gave the keys to the A4 to the kid. he likes the "upgrade" as he calls it.

So he doesn't have the purple B5 anymore? Or that's the one you're parting out?

No - he has the blue A4 for the winter with new winters on the 15". I suspect it'll be a permanent replacement. The purple one is now in my garage. If the weather permits, I may run it down to KC later this week for work just to give it the acid test. I does seem solid but needs struts(The B5's handle like a drunken whale when the shocks go).

The white one was a quart low but I found out it had been in Chicago and Monmouth, Ill since it's last visit home.

Wife says to wait with the wrenches yet.....I kind of like the "Frankenstein" idea.

We have it solved (I think):

Father-in-law is a WWII vet (Flight navigator in the B-somethings) and at Christmas I noticed that his 1989 Chevy Corsica was looking kind of rough.

He's been driving the blue '98 Passat the last 2 days and seems to like it. We're giving it to him so he can license and insure.

Watch the Veridian Swap Sheet for an 89 Chevy Corsica. Lost of rust, not a lot of paint but runs!
