Alright guys, it's official!!
You guys wanted a huge GTG this summer, and know we have it! Thanks to Kook for the idea, we are going to cruise to the Courage Center in Golden Valley, MN (where Jake is staying) and surprise him with a ton of his friends from PKG!
Jake has always been a great friend to everyone in the VW/Audi community and especially everyone in PKG, so it's about time we show our support to him and visit him while he is recovering!
The Plan
We have the park for all day on Sat., but we would like to get this started no later than 1pm.
Everyone from Iowa is going to meet near Mason City on Interstate 35 at 10:30am and leave by 11am
From Des Moines:
Meet at the Ankeny BP at 1st St. and Hwy 69 at 8:30am LEAVE at 8:45am
Stop in Ames at the Kum and Go on 13th Street
Pick up the Ames people and continue no later than 9:15am
From Eastern Iowa
All meet at Lichty Automotive (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=lichty+automotive&sll=44.166445,-93.603516&sspn=6.028172,14.194336&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=13&iwloc=A) in Waterloo by 9:15am
and LEAVE by 9:30am to Mason City.
Meeting in Mason City
Exit 194 off of I-35 for Clear Lake. There are TONS of gas stations, restaurants, etc. There is a SHELL gas station with a Subway close by and a Wendy's inside. LOTS of parking and very accessible/visible from the exit. It would be perfect for everyone to meet here to cruise up!

Also, anyone from farther away, do not hesitate to inquire about staying somewhere on friday night. I know I have at least a couch for people to crash on in Ames.
It also looks like John2.0T is opening his cabin for us to stay at on Sat. night if you are concerned about lodging for the event!! Its about 45 mins away from the park and he will lead a caravan over there.
There are three in-ground grills for us to use at the park, so we are thinking that sometime soon after we get there, we start the grills up and start cooking and aim for an eating time of around 3ish.
For the BBQ, it would be great if you could all bring your own meat to grill, or split some with another member. And then also, please bring ONE other food item (ie. chips, salad, any other picnic items) to share!
Jake's family is very excited for this to happen and we know that he will be very excited! He misses PKG and all of you guys so much! (we all know he couldn't go two hours with out logging on to PKG!) as Jake's dad said in the other discussion thread:
Jake's Dad here, this all sounds good to us. Jake has no idea that it's happening and we will do our best to keep it from him. He will be pretty excited when he sees everybody pull up. He remembers his car very well & everything about it and loves to look at his car magazines when he is home.
thanks for this
So lets try to clear our schedules and make this the biggest PKG GTG ever, I know we can make that happen, and I know that Jake would appreciate this more than anything!!
If you have any questions/comments feel free to post them!

My family has a cabin just outside of the cities in Minnesota. It's about 45 minutes east, near Forest Lake. I'm talking to my parents and we are planning on using our cabin as a place to crash for those who can drive up. I've had 25+ people stay here for a few New Year's parties in the past so I'm sure it will work out. We can easily meet up with Jake on Saturday, crash at my place and cruise back Sunday morning.
I dont want anyone to hold back due to paying for a hotel! Gas is expensive enough but we all know we are doing this for Jake. I'm really looking forward to seeing him and I hope this will make it easier for more people to make it up!
John, that would be fantastic. So far the plan is a sweet cruise up to Jake, hang out until we're ready to run to a park and BBQ, from there we can head on out to Johns cabin (if everything goes smooth). A huge thanks to anybody and everybody helping out here!
ALSO! If people could pitch in like, $10 or bring some grub with them that would be fantastic.

Ok Aaron i posted on Eurowerks and included them also, like we talked about at Firkin Fox.
I asked for some suggestions as to where we should picnic (unless Marcus already has a place in mind) and meet them if they want to join us, Being their neck of the woods i'm sure they know more about the area than us.I am sure John will chime in over there due to knowing some of them better than we do, here is the link

cool! I am probably going to try to handle the park issue, just because it would be easy for me to go look at which ones are going to suit our needs with the amount of people/cars and which ones are going to be handy/accessible for Jake. I have a few in mind, but I am going to work with Jake's dad to find the perfect one!

Cool good to know. i will still forward you any suggestions , more never hurts.:D
As far as Iowa people, I'm figuring we either meet up at Cadwizs house (if that's cool with him) or somewhere closer to Ames near 35 so we don't lose anybody trying to jump on the interstate. Figure we meet up at 7:30-8am and leave at 8:30am so we arrive at around lunch. Speaking of lunch though, what can/should we do for lunch? We could always take 30 minutes out and hit up an Arbys before we meet up with Jake afterwards (say about 1pm or so).

A good meeting point would probably be the big truck stop in Albert Lea.
It's quite a long drive for people in Dubuque, and on the east side, so we will have to plan accordingly if we ALL want to meet and cruise up at the same time, or just go in seperate groups and plan to meet in Minneapolis.

This is a good idea, I would just rather leave later and meet up with them on the way. 2 hours less driving for us.

In the middle of what?
I'm thinking everybody from Eastern Iowa can leave together as well as everybody from central Iowa. From there we all meet up at a point near Mason city and cruise into MN as one big pack.
Des Moines to Mason City should be about 1 hour 45 min.
Iowa City to Mason City should be about 2 hour 45 min.
Waterloo to Mason City should be about 1 hour 15 min.
Just to give you guys an idea I would say Des Moines people leave at 9am and Eastern Iowa people leave at 8am, then we can all meet up at Mason City and leave there at approx. 11am and probably grab some lunch while we're there.

Mason City sounds like a good plan to me. Aaron i think you did a good job sorting out the times. So where are we DM people leaving from. My house or Ankeny wall mart?
Better yet if we leave from the BP in ankeny they have higher octane gas plus coffee etc.

Actually the BP in Ankeny sounds like a damn good idea. For those who haven't grabbed a little breakfast or fuel yet can do that when they arrive and we can take off straight from there. Where is this BP?

Sorry, me and a lot of fellow PKG members in Dubuque (not all of them) have never met/spoken to Jake, so IMHO I would feel rather awkward driving that far to see someone I don't even know, not that I don't hope he gets better and is happy, I just don't see my presence adding too much to the pot for this GTG.

This GTG is not all about if you know Jake or not, it's two things. First, and most importantly, it's showing Jake that the club that he helped start, and devoted countless hours to, is there for him and is supporting him through this life changing injury. This will mean so much to him to see a bunch of cars that he always has and always will love!
Secondly, this is the big GTG for the summer, this is a chance to meet and get to know the members of this club that you have NOT yet met, and spend some time with some people with very similar interests.
This will really be a great weekend to help out a fellow PKG'er and spend an awesome day out with other PKG'ers grilling, eating, and just having fun!

Okay, well if you put it that way, if we have somewhere I can at least pitch a tent or something or find somehow to avoid a hotel room, then I will mull things over at my new job and see if I have the pull to bring along some Dubuque/QC people. Changing my RSVP to a maybe.

Guess I better pipe in here...I really do want to go, but I might be getting promoted to supervisor soon (hopefully) and the work schedule/hours are TBD after we "negotiate" my wage. ;) Once I get that figured out (hopefully in the next couple of weeks) I will let you know!
And I know that Jake and I locked horns on PKG a lot. We never had the chance to meet up and after his accident I felt horrible about the way we treated each other on the forums sometimes. I hope he's doing well and I'm thinking/praying for him. :)
Soooo, anybody out in eastern Iowa wanna help plan this?

My cabin will be open for anyone who would like a place to crash on Saturday night!
It's about 45 minutes from Minneapolis and we have enough room for people to crash inside, pitch a tent outside, or crash in the sleep cabin. I'll lead the group from the meeting point to my cabin on Saturday evening.
Anyone coming from Dubuque can meet with the Waterloo guys and cruise up with us. Kevin's shop would be a perfect place to meet.
Still wondering where the people from Eastern Iowa want to meet up, some place in Waterloo, do you want to head straight to Mason City?

Big update!!
We have officially reserved a park area for the event! We are going to be at Brookview park in Golden Valley, MN.
This is very close to the Courage Center, so it will be good for the Rotz's to bring Jake over. And this way we can all pull into the Courage Center and surprise him!
This was one of the only shelters available that weekend that also has a restroom facility and didn't cost an arm and a leg to reserve. The one hitch is that we have it from 11am to 4pm. So we may need to head out a little earlier than originally planned, and do a lunch there. There are three grills to use, so that is also great!
here is a link to the location:

So Marcus, Kook- on the MN. side Eurowerks still is down to meet us so , We need to sort of figure out What the exactly what we are doing. Are we all going to go to Jakes location and see him then drive to the park? or are we just going to go to the park and meet him there? Plus we need to figure out where to meet the MN guys, At the park or some where else?
Let me know , i just updated the E.W thread with Marcus's comment so i'll keep doing so when we get more info.
Bla! A little earlier and a little less time then I planned! We can make this work though.
Alright, new plan is, the whole Iowa crew meets up by Mason City at 10am, we leave at 10:30 from there.
Marcus, like Cadwiz asked, would you like us to meet up at the Courage Center or should we all cruise into the park? On one hand, I think it would be cool for Jake to cruise there with us, on the other hand I think it would be cool if we all started pulling up at the park and he was there.

Yeah, sorry it has to be a little earlier, but thats what was available.
it is probably about 1.5 to 2 hours from Mason City so I am not sure what time we would like to meet there, leaving at 10:30 may be a little late.

Hey Guys:
Jake's dad here, first THANK YOU KOOK for getting this thing started, it has been amazing to see the response from this website, Eurowerks & now Dub Korp. Jake will be very surprised-so far he still has no idea that it's happening. I hope the location and time works for everybody, seems to be a lot of discussion about it, hopefully this will not discourage any participation. We checked numerous parks within 1/2 hour of the Courage Center and this one was the only one that had that day open for under $200 per half day. It looks very nice, it has a Pavillion so we don't have to worry about rain, plenty-O-parking, 3 grills and also is very accomodating for Jake (easy access, sidewalks, restroom accross the street, etc...). I will let the planning up to Kook & Marcus, they seem to be doing a tremendous job. We look forward to meeting everybody soon. Guess I better get Jake's tires mounted on his freshly painted rims for this event.
Thanks again
Tim

It's difficult to sit down and call anybody at the moment, I'm completely booked until Friday. Ok, I'm in. I've never met Jake of any of you west siders yet. It's about time. This means I won't be going to Treffen though. Two long weekends In 4 weeks is just too much. This is more important than a car show anyways. I'll try to set up a starting time for us Q.C. guys and we'll meet at Kevin's shop in the morning. I do need little help though. What time for sure do you want to be in Mason City? And how long is it time wise from Kevin's to Mason City? I know it's about 2 hrs 45 min to Waterloo from the QC, but google maps says it's 2 and a half hours from Waterloo to Mason City. That don't seem right. Is it? Let me know, in the mean time i'll pm some of the QC guys and see if there down. I gotta say this is really cool. In todays society most people are too wrapped up in there own lives to ever go out of there way for someone else. This says a lot for the people on these forums.:tu::tu:

Then we should be able to make it to Mason City by 10. I know it's earily, but we have a lot of ground to cover. If anyone has a better idea as to start times or location, by all means speak up. I drove up to MN last weekend via IA-27/18W to 35. I found an excellent spot for us to meet on Saturday morning.

Stef here... I've been bugging Mike to come on here and ask.... but he is has been really busy lately, so I'll ask...
Is there anything we need to bring with us to stay over night, sleeping bags, snacks?? And for the bbq we bring our own meat and then a side item to share? Right? Anything else?
Also, what about grilling materials? Charcoal?
Oh, and another thought... this may be weird, but with so many people staying in a cabin, maybe we should bring extra toilet paper? Well, I spose you boys don't wipe the you-know-what, so maybe that won't be an issue, but something I thought of.

Stef - good to hear you guys are going to be there!
I started a thread for those who are going to cruise up AND stay at my cabin 100%. It sounds like a few people are planning on driving back the same day.
Thank you for contributing! I will be updating the thread I started very shortly. I would prefer it if those who are planning on staying Sunday for fun on the lake and BBQ'ing would contribute with a bit of food (package of brats or burgers or a side ;))

Just a minor question, are we making a last minute stop for any necessities (I know there will be something we need) that we can get meat at too, or shall we just pack coolers and send 1 or 2 people for missed items once we get there?
I'm willing to pick up a bag of charcoal, lighter fluid, and hit Costco for some plastic forks/knives and napkins. Could someone bring grilling utensiles? I would but Jill and I are gonna grab a hotel and turn the weekend into a mini-vacation and would rather not have grilling stuff smelling up the car all night.

I planned on taking a cooler with what we needed, And i can bring the one set of grilling equipment, We might need a couple sets if we get more than one grill going. Way looking forward to this. We will be going back the same day so it won't smell up the Jetta to bad..............oh wait it smells already i have had dogs in it .

Quick update...
I drove up to MN last weekend via IA-27/18W to 35. I found an excellent spot for us to meet on Saturday morning.

Also, I will bring some grilling utensils.

I would just like to echo everyone's comments so far and say that this was one of the best days I personally have had in a long time. It was great seeing Jake again and everyone making sacrafices to cruise up there (gas sure isn't cheap) totally renewed my own enthusiasim for this group. For me it always has been more about the people than the cars (although we do have some sweeeeeet cars in the group) and GTGs like this just prove we have the best members a group can have.
Huge thanks to Aaron for the brilliant idea, and also to Marcus, Jake's parents (good work on keeping the secret!) and everyone else that put in the work to get this thing organized. Jill got some great shots of the group during the picnic and I will be getting those up in the pic thread after work today.
