Just figured I would toss this up here. This swap is the first step in my turbo build. True BMW turbo enthusiast understand why this motor is perfect

So I have everything I need for my swap here or in the mail for delivery Monday. So the plan is to pull my exhaust, drive shaft, engine w/ trans on Monday. Hopefully have my cams for the new motor on Monday and either swap them in that day or the next. Depending on if the motor gets out on Monday which I plan on getting it done even if it takes all night, I will start installing the m52 on Tuesday. That gives me two days to fix that **** I mess up before I leave for Florida.

So anyways I usually get a late start to my day so I will probably start around noon. Anyone that isn't workin or near Crystal Lake let me know and I can give you some directions.

First motor swap FTW. Tons of reading through numerous swap threads, the Bentley and prepping as much as possible better pay off lol.

This is what I have as of now or should be here monday:
1. 2.8l m52 (~41k miles)
2. ZF 5 spd Trans (~41kmiles)
3. Shift linkage, selector rod and shifter
4. 4 bolt m3 drive shaft w/ center support (~50k miles)
5. Misc nuts, bolts, and gaskets for motor and driveshaft
6. s50 M3 cams (~80k miles)
7. TMS OBDI Temp Sensor Adapter
8. AA Coolant Pipe Adapter
9. New motor mounts
10. UUC Black trans mounts
11. OBDII Headers welded for OBDI use w/ O2 sensor plugs
12. Racers Market Tuning
13. OBDI Swap parts from my 325

I might be forgetting something so if anyone has any input please let me know

I'll explain with pictures

Started like this

Had to get the money Turbo Supercharger setup

Wiring sorted

Found this. Started to raise the motor and was about to undue the motor mounts. Didn't need to do the drivers side as the mount was broken and pulled out with no force.:run::run::run:

Couldn't find an engine hoist so having strong friends always helps

And of course the money shot. Yes it had to be done. First Motor swap for the win :worky::D:D:D

I pulled the motor, trans, exhaust, and drive shaft. It honestly took 45 mins to get the motor out. I forgot to detach the ground on the passenger side motor mount. We couldnt figure out why the motor kept turning to that side and almost turning the hoist over. Check the trans tunnel like 5 times and then finally spotted the damn thing. It was so strong we lifted the whole care with it a few times.

Drive shaft, software, gaskets, and OBDI conversion parts showed up to day. Hopefully have the other motor in tomorrow and maybe try and start it.

Today we spent about 8 hours today pulling everything.

Hope to get the new motor installed tomorrow and get it wired in. Hope to have it started up and running, we will see about driving. Hope to complete the whole swap in under 25 hours over two, possibly three days. That means driving it out of the garage with no problems

Holy shiat that is awesome! You have just inspired me to jump to Stage 9 of my build and transplant an M3 motor in my new coupe. :D

Oh wait I changed my mind b/c I don't have the nads or the tools to ever pull off a engine swap. I know for sure I'd never get it running again. You are definitely the man! :hoff:

I don't have any pictures, but yes I forgot the beer. Sam Adams to the rescue, but no pictures. My camera was out of batteries, but had enough to turn on and take one then died. I managed to get 12 pics total like that before it wouldnt turn on anymore

Thanks for the words. The swap is no that hard if you label everything and do some research prior to the swap to see where people had problems. Really there aren't that many tools needed. I have a craftsman 200 something piece mechanics set. Its got just about everything u need minus a torque wrench, jack, jack stand, and a hammer for when you get mad. LOL

good luck on the project.

he is right about the swap. We have done the M50 to M52 swap with a few parts from the M50 on the M52. Even the 3rd pedal swap isnt to bad..
