Hey I really want to change the color of my headliner, so I have two questions about this. First how do you remove the headliner and pillars? If anyone has pics or knows of a write up that would help. Second how do you add the new fabric? glue (what kind) sew(how) or what have you. I am thinking a black something but not sure of fabric or how to do it. any help would be great.

You'd be surprised how easy it is to get headliner fabric... Well the first one I went to had as much as I needed. (About 3 yards for my gti) You will want to use special headliner adhesive spray that sprays out like webbing. You can get that at every major auto parts stores. 2 cans for good measure if it's only for the headliner, probably 3 if you're wrapping the pillars too.

I recovered my pillars and headliner over the winter and it was pretty fun! remember if you want a black headliner you better get oem black handles, visors, etc. or paint yours if you're confident. I like how mine looks and it's holding up quite well!

what type of paint would you use for the handles and such? i assume high heat of some sort? if not where can i get black parts? also would the glue hold up to heat or is this something you'd have to redo later? and what type of cloth would you recommend? or does it matter?

I used a special plastic paint by Krylon I believe. Fusion I think? It did chip a little on the holy sh!t handles but that was it.

Any cloth is fine as long as it's not too thin for the glue so it does not soak through. It's good to have a material with a little stretch so you can wrap it around the contours of the pillars but still keep the pattern straight. The plaid I used would only stretch diagonally so it made it challenging but it still worked out fine for the most part.

The spray adhesive is very strong and is meant to be used for headliners so it is good stuff.

Yep as Chad stated krylon fusion is good... just take your time with 5-6 very thin coats and allow plenty of drying time between coats. Prior to paint, I used a scotch brite pad to scrub the pieces clean and rough up the surface just enough for good paint adhesion.

mephisto... if you'd rather buy the oem black trim, it is available from 20th and R32's that are being parted out, and at the dealer I'm sure... I painted mine to still flow well until I can slowly buy all the black stuff! Nothing like a nice black headliner and tan handles and visors :p
