Ok as some of you may remember I was asking how to cut the shifter in a MK IV GTI, I have a crappy bolt on aftermarket shift knob so some of you will need to use a die to put threads on the shaft but yea basically this is how i did this. thanks to everyone that gave me tips on the shifter question thread.
ok here are the tools i used...simple a...i believe its called a pipe cutter, and a sharpie to mark the cuthttp://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg36/Mephisto1337/PKG%20write%20up/DSCN0242.jpg

and this is stock height http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg36/Mephisto1337/PKG%20write%20up/DSCN0234.jpg

so heres how you do this take off your boot knob and mark where you want to cut. I took off about an inch and a half. then use the pipe cutter by tightening it on the shaft rotate 360 degrees and then tighten more and more until the shaft is cut.http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg36/Mephisto1337/PKG%20write%20up/DSCN0236.jpg

it's a really simple thing to do and I love it.
here is the final height for now I might take more off but we'll seehttp://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg36/Mephisto1337/PKG%20write%20up/DSCN0240.jpg

Hope everyone likes the write up. I know it's simple as could be but hey there was one on the tex that helped me so hopefully someone can use this

Clever but it isn't really a short throw shifter....just a shorter shifter.

It's not really a shorter throw though, you've just made the shifter rod shorter.

Dude...if it feels better to you that is all that matters. I have been in cars where the shifter feels like it belonged in a semi.

Yeah - this will do nothing for the throw - if anything make the throw worse, but the height may be more comfortable for you. a short shifter will shorten the distance the rod has to travel to engage the gear - not the rod itself. what you did is just a little preference change. looks like you did it clean though. I've seen some people butcher it with a dremmel trying to do what you just did.

I have the TT short shift part on my tranny under the hood so I do have a shorter throw, but I did this to mine in addition and although it is not a "shorter throw" as has been stated, it is more comfortable and out of the way as the stock shift knob's height is pretty tall compared to other sporty manual sports cars IMO.

One of the main reasons I chopped mine was because I got to drive lenny's S4 and his shifter was so short is was like a ball that you just grapple with your hand, and really liked the feel of that. Plus this was free!

Yeah I have been planning on doing this myself. Just want a lower grip and a shorter throw...along with whats already on there.

by the way, job looks good! :tu:
