WARNING to all those with a MKV.

Lately when I go around corners really tight my low oil warning comes on. So I stopped in to the dealership Friday to bug Jason while he was getting his oil changed and talked to the service rep Zack. He said this was a common issue lately with the 2.0T motors in the Passat...(WARNING TODD!!!) and some of the other vehicles with this motor. He said there is a valve that is supposed to stop the oil from going somewhere.....and it is probably not working, so the oil just escapes to be burned off somewhere. He also stated that they have updated the part with a new model. I am about 1300 miles from getting the oil changed but they decided to do it while they replace the valve. He said to check my oil....something I really don't do with a new vehicle. I know maybe that's stupid, but c'mon it is a new car and shouldn't be losing oil. Anyway, I decided to do that today and there isn't even oil on the stick.....soooo I borrow Mom's bug, looked dorky driving a yellow bug to the auto place. I called the dealership to make sure what was for sure put into the car, but the service department was closed....yeah my luck. So after calling Gary and taking his advice I found out according to Quaker States website that the 5W40 Euro oil is synthetic....that's what was on my last receipt. So I put in one quart of synth oil in the motor....aaaand it barely touches the stick. Now Zack said to just put in some oil, just enough for the car to be ok but don't fill it up so that they can see that it is losing oil. I think tomorrow I will put in some more to bring it about halfway.
Now what pisses me off is that if I hadn't said anything to Zack then I wouldn't of gotten the new part and the idiots there should of noticed this the last time I got my oil changed because when I was due last time for an oil change I was getting the same warning when I went real fast around a certain on ramp. If they know it is an issue why not do a recall instead of replacing motors down the road. My car wasn't do for an oil change for another 1300 miles.....new motor would of been in my future. VW just pisses me off sometimes on how they deal with "known" issues.
So to Todd, Jason, Jake, Adam and anyone else on here with the 2.0T motor.....check your oil and ask about the new part.

Yep I've read about the issue. Last I read the issue mainly happened on 2006 2006.5 and early 2007 models. Ever since I read that I'm pretty anal to check. Knock on wood I've never seen mine go down between my 5k oil changes. I'll mention it next time I'm in, thanks for the heads up.

Oh and just to add to your vw rant. Reminds me the vr6 passats and the issue they are having with a oil pump bolt that isn't big enough. On the tex they are up to 20+ cars that had to have their engine replaced. Woudn't it be cheaper to replace a 5 cent bolt than entire engine :screwy:

WOW, I remember you talking about this but didn't know and I guess like you, know that it was that bad, I haven't noticed it in my car yet but will definitely watch it more carefully now, thanks for the heads up. And no they didn't mention anything about it during the oil change.

If I hadn't been zipping around corners I wouldn't of thought anything of it because there would of been no warning. The only notice I would of had was my engine going south.

Engines will run on less than a quart of engine oil without damage quite often. I've seen it many many times at the dealer. Fix the oil loss you probably won't ever have any engine problems, even if it has been starved for oil a few times for a few seconds each time.

A lot of times a problem happens to only a small percentage of vehicles so it is cheaper for the auto makers to put a few engines in than it is to have a recall. Plus recalls are bad for sales....

I suppose it looks like I'm trying to justify them not telling you of potential problems but to be honest, we have lists of dozens of problems that affect every model at the dealer and if we had to repair all of these concerns before they were problems you would lose big bucks on every car. Most of the time they are less than 10% of the produced vehicles.

I understand where you are coming from. I just don't understand why they didn't notice that the oil was strangely low last time they changed it. It had to be real low last time because I was getting the low oil warning when I would go around tight corners right before I got the oil changed. I am one of a few out there that understands the dealerships are at the mercy of the manufacturer and that the manufacturer is not at my beck and call 24/7.

Dealerships suck...

Good luck getting everything sorted out. Glad to hear that you took the initiative to solve the problem. Honestly, if they are members I would call the BBB on them if you can...

New cars do use oil, my X states in the manual that under "enthusiastic" driving conditions it will use oil, I find it to be a qt or so every 3 or so months (more in the summer) given the car has a 15k oil change interval I need to watch it.

Ferrari will use a qt on a pretty regular basis as it is a flat motor
Same with my mothers 911

the maser used a bit during the rally last year

on a turbo car oil usage should be expected.

I am not at that point John....they are taking cae of the issue. It just seems that this dealership doesn't seem to take initiative on anything, every issue I have ever had I had to get the info for them.
Interesting info Jeff. Trust me I will always check the oil on a new car from now on.

:word: to that Mike....granted I'm assuming you are talking about Lithia. If they would take 5 mins to look at a problem a person says things would be so much better. I've had to show/prove things to them several times and after I do they finally fix it (I shouldn't have to do this, this is why they have access to the so called "tech line").

Not that it makes a difference but my last VWOA "survey" call I said this very same thing. If they would take 5 mins and actually listen to people it would save the customer and the dealership time/money.

So they fixed the car and it not only runs better, but it also gets better gas mileage....yeah! The car gets a higher peak boost and runs smoother...I guess it had sort of a vacuum leak because of this. I had wondered why the boost had dropped a bit.....now I know why.
