View Full Version : Suspension
Do you guys know if coilovers give you more comfortable ride than springs and shocks? I have Neuspeed/Bilstein setup right now and I’m not very happy with all the bouncing around while driving.
Thanks
give it a couple minutes and jeff with j&J performance will give you a good answer:tu:
hehe ok, I'll wait for jeff
lol - sorry i would answer for you but i dont know!:beerglass:
i may have lied about the couple minutes thing... i thought jeff was online. turns out i was wrong... i imagine he will be on sometime in the next 45 minutes or so.

a lot of coils give u a tougher stiffer suspension which would have less give when u hit pot holes and wil bounce a little more i think, but im not 100%

coilover > spring/shock combo. the end.
What neuspeed springs do you have on there, how much of a drop? If you have a "race" spring then simply going to "sport" might solve you problems. The bouncing around might also have a lot to do with your wheels/tires. Can you give a more detailed description of your suspension setup?

For ride and comfort - Strut, shock, and spring combo
For LOW and stiffer ride - Coilovers
Sounds like your struts may be bad.
coilovers are really meant for a more performance-based ride, but if you get decent ones, they will have a dampening adjustability that lets you set how stiff they are.
however, like iadubber said, depending on which exact spring/shock combo you have, they may just be blown. lowering springs with stock shocks will not hold up very well for long, and even the aftermarket shocks can be troublesome if they are not rated for as low as the springs take you.

Coil overs are not meant for comfort. Do your research and get a good set up. This consists of spring rates and damper. Some set ups will work on one car but not on another. I prefer the spring and shock/strut combo myself.

I agree. I am planning on moving to coilovers from my APEX big drop cup kit this summer. I wanna be low as chit! I don't care about the ride. :D

I'm thinking of trying out the VMaxx coilovers alot of people on the TEX have now. They are 599, but don't have any dampening adjustments. I'd like to get some B&Gs but they are expensive even used.

599 coilovers? are you sure they are not just sleeves for factory shcoks?
as for the coilover to springs/shocks thing
if you dont like how stiff your setup is now you wont like coilovers they rider rougher the thing will follow the road like a truffle pig even adjustable coilovers are are signifigantly more stiff on thier softest setting then your setup is now
Now Neuspeed springs are rather heavy and dont have as large of a progressive area if you want a smoother ride check out eibach pro series or H&R both have a nice progressive layout to take the edge off of rough roads

being cheap is not always a good thing though. I've never heard of quality coilovers going any lower than $600-700.

just be sure to do lots of research on them. it would suck to buy them and then find out they suck.
Thanks for the feedback people. Looks like I'll stick with springs. I have a 1.5" sport drop right now and looks like if I got coils it would bounce even more so I stick to what I have or consider softsport springs.

It's probably NOT your springs. It's most likely your struts. Get some decent struts and give that a shot.
But I think I have decent struts. They are Bilstein about one year old.

but are they just stock-type replacements are performance-based struts? i don't know i'm just asking to help out, lol.
they are the performance based struts. and thanks for the help!

how many miles have you put on them over the year? struts shouldn't go bad in a year. do you notice any creaking or other noises when going over bumps? do the "bounce test" go to each corner of the car and push down, see if it comes right up or if it wobbles around a bit before settling.
Oh I think I put on about 5-6K I think. And it a great suspension, it does exactly what its suppose to, the handling is great (for good roads). here in Marion roads are not so good so I was trying to figure out if coils would give me more confortable ride, but people say that coils would give me even bouncier ride than now so I think I'll stay away from that.
