I bought a replacement battery on EBay for a 1st gen nano I got from the kids when they upgraded. I didn't realize that you have to crack it open (Apparently Apple didn't really want to make it too easy) and then solder the new one in.

I still had some old jewelry "lupes" so I could see to solder the fine wires on the battery to the ckt board.

It survived and now actually lasts more than 30 minutes on a charge.

Anyone else replace their Ipod battery? I think the classics are a little easier from what I've heard/learned.

the new ones are a PITA -- even at my interstate battery store we don't recommend replacing them. for th cost of the battery and install, your better off just buying a whole new unit, esp if its a nano or mini unit :td:

Yeah, even the old one I have would be tough for the average joe. I worked as a bench-tech at Sun Electric in Chicago when I went to school the first time. I repaired the new boards that failed test and the ones from the field. I used to be pretty good at soldering small components but I don't have a variable temp iron like I had there.

Kind of like getting good with a MIG and then going back to Stick Arc welder.

I can do this and other wiring stuff for any of you other guys on here! Where I work I have daily access to a professional solder station combined wiht the use of a microscope.

its not hard, Ive replaced 2 batteries in 4th gen ipod and one in a old school nano. Ive also fixed tons of parts on my treo (lcd screen twice and numous other small things) because my ex would piss me off so much over the phone that I'd just wing the ****er across the room. After the third one my boss stopped paying for them so I had to take matters into my own hands.
