My car died on the way to work and won't start, the fuel pump was running non stop with the ignition off, so I pulled the relay it stopped. I put it back in it primed and turned off like normal but still won't start. I think it's the relay but any other ideas??? MKII 1988 Jetta GLI 1.8 16v just for the record.
any more info? whats it doing when you turn it over, obviously cranking right? do you smell gas? do you have gas :D

I have gas :finger: it cranks normal no fire, no smell of gas but gas was leaking out after I got back to it and found out the fuel pump was still running I saw the rainbows on the ground. I figure there is a fuel pressure release somewhere.

Hey do you hear the fuel pump turn on when you turn the car on? If you're gettign spark and it's not starting then you might not be getting fuel.
I think you are on the right track with the fuel pump, but the relay might not be bad. See if the wiring or plug the fuel pump is damaged, causing the relay to go bad. Trace it from the pump to the interior.
Pop the hood in a nice warm well lit garage and lift up the car. Check the fuel lines, see if the line is kinked possibly. Inspect everything under the hood and see if you can find anything.
Check all fuses with a multimeter or test light, do not trust your eyes. You can easily test a relay with the proper know-how as well. Depending on oyur electronics skills however it might be easier to buy a new one and throw it in....

also there is two fuel pumps on a 16v one in tank and one underneath in the fuel box.
