View Full Version : Mod time for zie Audi?

So since I've been super patient, only spending my $ on maintenance and since the Audi has been such a trooper, I think it's time for some mods. I still have some maintenance I should do (control arms and various small things) but hell, that's no fun and can wait til spring.
There's TONS I want to do but I'll start off on the right foot, chip and boost guage :) haime (sp?) from GOVAG could help out here! I'm not planning to go all out with this car, 250-300hp at most. The k03 is on it's way out and someday I'll go k04 or T-28. For now I'm planning on getting a GIAC chip then the AWEtuning boost gauge and dremel it into a center vent. Later on down the road will be some exhaust.. what are you opinions on them for a tiptronic? I hate exhaust when it drones.. I've heard stick with Borla or Milltek if I want a close to stock sound at cruising speeds, this true?

By the way, only "mods" are new air filter (miiight drill some holes into the airbox/swisscheese mod) 710N and APR snub. Can you think of any other small dollar upgrades I could do?
Are Samco IC hoses worth the $? I don't see the need for a FMIC quite yet and I won't be beating on the car much and will hardly ever heatsoak the stock SMIC.
someone who knows more about this then me reply.... When I am looking for parts I just think to myself, what can I buy that Jeff will help me install but be mad about doing it?

haha at sml.
but hurray mods! borla mufflers sounds pretty good, they are a little deeper. i saw some audi's on the vortex movie that sounded amazing and i think they had a supersprint exhaust but ill check later when i get outta class on that one! milltek always has good stuff too but i dunno what their audi exhaust sounds like
u can prolly find a bunch of exhaust clips on youtube

thanks for all the help, sml, you've answered my question.. thread closed :p
gtev -- i looked a bit last night, all i found were WOT pulls and engine brakes, i havent found an exhaust for Audi that i dont like at WOT. i'm just worried about having a loud ass drone while cruising at 70mph, another reason i'll probably never do a testpipe.

Boostin.... Are you just buying the gauge from AWE? or you buying the whole package? I think the gauge alone is like $150 or so, well thats the price for the b6's. I just got a used boost kit (Vent and gauge) for $150 shipped from someone on audi world. I think there is one for sale on audizine. I could check for you.

I'm actually thinking about just buying a VDO gauge now.. $150 just for a boost gauge is ridiculous IMO. I don't need the pod because I can just dremel the vent and fit it myself. Then I can also get the fittings/vac lines at Advance Auto for around $5. The VDO's are less than $50 I think.
I'll check AZ/AW for any for sale though..

a good upgrade would be brakes. i put some brembo rotors on my B5 with some PBR ceramic pads. they perform very well for street driving and provide great feel even under harsh braking conditions.
likewise you could also do some cosmetic mods, such as wheels, an RS4 bumper, or OEM HIDs (although hids aren't cheap :D )
i'm anxious to see where you take this A4 :tu:

I have brakes listed down as maintenance.. which are just fine now, I'll be doing the A8 upgrade in the spring though (larger rotors). I'm talking performance mods as of right now.
Here's the full mod wish list off the top of my head:
Performance
pc16 k04 w/GIAC software
injectors (haven't decided which yet)
vag-com
fmic
borla/milltek exhaust
valve body upgrade
Cosmetic
5-spoke wheels with deep dish, still looking
8mm/10mm wheel spacers
H&R coilovers
35% tint all around
valeo ecodes (headlights)
rs4 grille
reiger body kit
then there's further maintenance things i want to do, stereo, etc.

so the VDO is $55 and the AWE is $150ish. the AWE obviously looks better and matches the Audi interior red perfectly, but is it worth the extra $100? ugh.

Yeah the AWE gauge and mounting equipment was $250 for my B7...
Remember you need an aftermarket front bumper to fit that FMIC ;)
Great mod choices - your A4 is gonna haul ass.

01-19-2007, 11:15 AM
the entire kit from awe for the B5 is $225ish i think :( did you get that vent pod? i'm thinking it'd be easy just to take out my existing vent and cut out space then mount the gauge in myself..
manguyen
01-19-2007, 12:32 PM
get AWE. :) there are always some that pop up on the forums. From AWE the vent cost $110 bucks.. i asked them. Damn rip off for a piece of plastic. I dont think u could find a used AWE gauge without the vent. So if you get it, get the whole package used from someone. Same price as if you would just buy a new gauge from them. I'll see you Feb 4th and i'll show you the look of the gauge.

01-19-2007, 12:53 PM
I figured I'd go with AWE.. great guys to work with plus the gauge does look a lot better. That vent thing is ridiculous though.. do you think I could cut my vent and just fit the gauge myself?

I think I have a small Tomei boost gauge around somewhere you could tuck into the corner of your gauge cluster or on your steering column

Well if you F it up, you can always go buy the one from AWE... :)

Yeah the AWE gauge and set-up was expensive .... but it is VERY clean so I could care less.... I would rather spend another $100 and know my boost gauge is going to look good over doing it myself and risking the possibility of ruining my existing vents.
It also has to do with the fact that I told myself that when I mod my car... I am going to mod my car the right way... and the way I want. Which is the BEST excuse to spend MORE MONEY!!!! ;)
get some pictures up when the package from AWE arrives. :tu:

Will do :tu:
and john, I told myself the same thing.. you definitely get what you pay for with this. I was talking to Jon at AWE and he said that the existing vents are VERY fragile.. so I didn't want to take the chance. I'm trying to get a hold of hdia from govag to get an extra ECU, then I'll ship it over to AWE and get the GIAC chip :)

i know i'm fvcking worthless, boosting im sorry dude!! but i'll try to make up to you.
here is some good info, i hope is not too late.
1- what you have in mind for later mods? are you going to go stg3?
if so, get 2.5 to 3in turbo back exhaust, that will also help your turbo life making it last little longer(less heat and more exhaust speed). i really mean take out the cat.
2- Chip, a chip will def decrease the life of your turbo not just beacuse of the chip but mostly because of you, since the cars is going to be much faster you will also drive it faster using more boost forcing the turbo more, if you dont wanna spend money on a new turbo now get a TURBO back system, and a good dv. ALso test for boost leaks.
3- A8 brakes are great, i had them, but if you are not going to track the car won't make that much difference in brake power, the car will actually take a little longer time to stop(more distance) since you changed the brake bias towards the front. A8 is great for track(doesn't heat soak as quick) otherwise get good rotors send them to one cryo (www.onecry.com) and get some kick ass pads freodos(sp) or pagid blues.
4- CAI is worthless at this point, wait till stg3 than you actually need it because you will need more space for the turbo. again do fvck with the air box yet you might have some MAF problems and trust me you don't want that. don't use K&N, paper filter is fine just change it often. Get a 710 DV.
if you have any other questions feel free to ask me anytime, i'll send my email and phone to you.
later
Haime
Good luck

I finished doing the clear corner mod on the 1pc valeo headlights.. ordered two pairs of Osram H7 SilverStars +50% bulbs for hi/lo, clear sidemarkers and an RS4 grille. I'm waiting til I have to change my oil next (hopefully it'll be warmer) then I'll install that stuff and the boost gauge :tu: GIAC chip, Borla exhaust, 18x8.5" Flik Justices and H&R sport/Bilstein grooved and 35% tint all around coming next :)

SWEET!!!
Major props on the headlights!!
IMO - that cleans up the front end better than any other cosmetic mod for the B5. VERY good taste my friend.
Let me know if you want any help installing ... i'm only 10 minutes away and we still haven't met! ;)

Thanks :D I'd ask for your help but honestly the installation will be less than an hour for each :p
BTW, I forget which year it changed, but were you the sport package from factory? I'm looking for OEM sport wheels from the B6 (forget if you're B7 or not)
congrats on all the parts, Boostin. coming home to see your parts were delivered is one of the best feelings. :tu: :D
definitely get shots of everything once it goes on.

I have a B7.
The stock wheels are the 5-spoke 17's which I have my winter tires on right now.
If you wanna check out some nice replica wheels - check out www.hartmannwheels.com - i saw a silver B5 runnin' around with 18'' RS6 reps - looked sick.
