ok so i just found this on vortex and i am hella confused. because some people are sayin it can be recirculated to the intake, does that mean u dont need a cold air intake? or? and some others are saying it replaces the factory valve but u can install it in two places but a lot of people are talking about air intakes and i want a louder blow off sound than what im getting from my cold air but i dont want to replace my intake, any ideas or anything? i guess im just hella confused...:banghead

a $4000 turbo upgrade might help lol:D

jeff - whats your take on this?

haha i think a 4000 turbo upgrade would help a lot but then ud need a different bov maybe i dunno but the location would prolly be different since the turbo would take up more space

mmmm big turbo

Automotive fuel management is based on one of two primary system either a mass airflow system (MAF) or a manifold air pressure or speed density system (MAP) Since your dub is MAF based we will discuss that

also there are two primary types of blow off valves (BOV) either an open or a closed idle BOV

Now here is where it gets interesting on a MAF car the sensor (usually right behind the filter or midway down the intake pipe) meters the amount of air going into the motor if you put in a BOV and don't recirculate it you are venting metered air into the atmosphere which causes a rich run condition if the BOV is an open idle unit the car will get too much fuel at idle making it stumble, idle rough and very often die, recircing the air puts the metered air back in but still allows for the benefits of a high flow BOV (except no sound). The closed idle units have a dual stage piston so they dont vent air at idle this allows you to only have the rich run on shifts which is not as big of a deal (might shoot fireballs but no other major ill effects) but you do get that bov sound this way...recommendations for a closed idle unit is the HKS SSQV works great...Blitz can be setup that way but because it is only a block off plate it doesn't work very well.

Personally I wouldn't worry about a cold air intake on a turbo car given the temps in a turbo will put the air temp up signifigantly due to compression and heat soak from the exaust side of the turbo you will see very little decarease in after turbo air temps...you would benefit most from a high volume filter (more air not colder air) and a bigger intercooler(to drop after turbo air temps)

Here is a way to look at cold air intakes they (usually) use longer piping than a stock intake system so take a straw and tape another straw to it...it will take more suction to pull air into the two straws (longer pipe) than one (shorter pipe)

The stock GTI intake is heat soaked because it sits on top of the motor. It is also very restricted. A short ram intake is not going to do much on its own, you need to do more to the performance of the car. You will get the blow off noise you desire just by replacing the factory intake. As mentioned above, a cold air intake is not going to do that much for the money. A forge spacer will also help get the noise you are looking for since the GTI has a Diverter Valve and not a Blow Off Valve. The Diverter Valve recirculates the air back into the system. If you get a spacer the air is vented into the atmosphere.

thanks, i actually already have an intake and its kinda cold air but not as long as they usually are so thats not too bad, im already looking into an intercooler also. i was just curious because the posts that people made on vortex were confusing to me as to recirculations and whatnot
