View Full Version : How to beat a Volkswagen/Audi
VW's 2.0 N/A - if you are looking to beat one of these fine pieces of German engineering, first, you need to start out with a good base. Research is your best tool in this case to figure out exactly what is needed for the end results you desire. If you buy something other than VW's 2.0 N/A, congratulations! You can beat a Volkswagen!
Everything else VW / My Project - Making a decision on what to buy to compete in the same field was a difficult one here. Volkswagen and Audi really are their own class of car. After researching and searching for many long weeks, I have finally brought myself to the conclusion that no car will ever rank me among this crowd. I've got to sink further than I ever have before.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c57/KooKaT21/DSC053041.jpg
As you can see, my race car isn't really a car, but a truck! I had to lower my standards so far to place myself within the Volkswagen category that I sacrificed power, reliability, handling, and overall quality just like the Germans! This is a 1999 Ford Ranger 4.0L, 4x4 with a 5spd and the optional 4.10 gear ratios (the unfair advantage, I know).
Stay tuned for more progress updates!

Wow Kook, wow.
My first mod is going to be one of reliability for when the true power comes in. She will already take a stock 2.0 N/A (obviously) and a stock 1.8T, but we had to aim higher! Aim for the R32, which is known as one of Volkswagens premiere "tuner cars." So this time, I am installing a new Solid rear axle that I have upgraded with 31 spline axles, a modified Limited Slip Diff., and rear disc brakes. It has started off from the junkyard looking as such.

Now, this isn't the normal Ranger axle, this came from a Ford Explorer which has it's leaf springs attached to the bottom of the axle. We need to flip that around seeing as the ranger has them attached to the top, so first I needed to strip most of the crap off this axle and grind off the leaf spring perches.

I grew tired of grinding for tonight, the Volkswagen slaying will have to wait for another day it seems.
so in understanding you wanted to sink lower then buying german, so you bought a ford. SUCCESS :D

Actually, I still have the advantage, for every vw you show me that's over 100k miles, I'll show you 10 fords over 300k in better shape. So I'm starting with a better base than most it seems.
youll have an easier time picking corn and selling it out of the bed then any of us! Thats for sure! :D

And for every 10 of those you show me Ill show you 30 that are complete sh!t. Case in point the 89 F150 sitting in front of my cousins house at the moment, Anthony can be my witness here.

Yep... I beat the **** out of a mkIII VR6 for 6 hours on back roads searching for good driving routes.
oh yeah it had 310,000 miles on it ;)
How about my 4.0L? :finger:
trickier, I will admit, but that's what the new rear axle is going to be for. I'm sure it wont be hard to beat a mid-14 second (if it's lucky) family car.

Tell you what, if you can get passed a 9000lb diesel truck, I might consider racing you in something faster.

Just for the sake of FRIENDLY and EDUCATIONAL argument...
I watched a Diesel Dodge Ram (lifted, loud, stuff) go down the 1/4 mile and clock a trap time of 72mph...
I can get up to Highway Speed's with THIS (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y99/JBurgman/1969%20VW%20Bug/DSC02769.jpg) faster than that...
Now I have definitely heard about the possibilities of diesel tuning and i do not know what your truck has - can you comment?
Unless your being sarcastic and I'm being retarded I wanna hear about how you can talk smack with a 9000lb. truck :D

It's only got a few fuel mods on the stock turbo. The only thing that worries me about it at this point in the game is the tranny. 150k on the stock dodge auto is amazing in itself, but it's getting ready to bite the dust.
But fuel mods don't do a whole lot for a Diesel they tell me (the leaner you run the more power you have). My engine Vacuum looks normal and I have been thinking about getting a larger throttle body on it (which they say really increases the power on these). My ohms are too low on my ignition wires right now as well so I'm sure economy and power will pick up when I get those ordered in. The glow plugs that come in a Cummins engine are junk as well so I've been having to run a higher octane diesel (B20) in order for it to run smoothly. Also, thank god the weather is getting cooler because the fuel was starting to jell when it was above 100. I actually had to clean the gas return line because it got clogged this summer due to the temps being too high.

Aaron, you're my hero .
Racer Ranger is coming along nice!

Now for those of you who don't know, the leaf spring perches are on the top of the ranger axle, and on the bottom of the explorer axle, plus the ranger has the shocks mounted on the axle, where as the explorer it's on a bracket the leaf springs connect to. This means you gots to do a little work to make this bish fit.
Gotta get all pimped up to do this.
The eyewear - it's never fun picking metal out of your eyes.
The ear muffs - so I can take a break and still have hearing
The mask - I don't want to be picking metal boogers for the next few days
The hat - Because I roll deep.
http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x13/kookhowto/DSC05374.jpg
This bitch is a bit of a problem here... This is the leaf spring perch that is about 180 degrees from where we want it.
http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x13/kookhowto/DSC053641.jpg
This, is the solution. I was thinking if I was careful enough, I could reuse it. But hell if that's any fun.
http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x13/kookhowto/DSC053661.jpg
Clean as a whistle!
Those torsion bar mounts were pretty gay too... So here's one I have halfway off and beat the **** out of so I could grind off the other side.

Sparky sparky!

Cleanish! Now I'm just going to take care of a high spot on the other side, then remove the innards.

I'm bored.

Anytime!
I have... the one and only car I drive! lol ;)
Hopefully my snow tires and quattro will help? If not - we'll have fun pwning the parking lot tokyo style.
Nice work though! What other plans do you have?
Pfff, drive it, then work on the VW :) I just want something nice I can tow crap around with and not break down all the time.
You may have Quattro, but that wont help you get over that snow pile without busting a front bumper! :P
