I suppose I should start one of these to show everyone the stages of my car. I bought it mid-June 2006 with just over 99,000 miles on it for $4,000. Just like every teenager that gets a new car the first thing i did was put a headunit in the car. /////Alpine's deck with a iPod cable was my choice. Soon after that I decided that I needed to "kick up the bass" with some subwoofers. Saw Bestbuy had some Infinity's and drove over there for a steal on a pair. Grouped with a Rockford Fosgate amp, i was thumpin' my way down the streets getting looks from everyone I passed. Driving around at night i noticed my stock headlights weren't doing justice so I installed some Autozone fogs just so I could see the road a bit better. Thought I was cool when i installed a Jetta banner on the windshield and some VW logo's on the sides just to make sure everyone knew what the car was :sly: ;). in the winter I didn't do much. I realized that the stock headlights again weren't doing it for me so I looked on Ebay for some headlights. Came across a pair which had angel eyes (or so I thought) and was too excited. For my birthday I purchased Pioneer speakers in the doors and I was ready to go....

Not too long into the summer season I purchased smoked sidemarkers, the front of the car was finally coming together. CAI was next on the list as I made new friends that helped me out in that category. Smoked dummy's and turns were looked for and bought. A front wheel bearing was replaced and problems were cured for now. Treffen 2007 was around the corner and wanted to do something I wanted for a while. A EUROPLATE was it, many different ideas as for what it would say were in mind but WV-OTN3V was my choice. At Treffen is where I come into the PKG sceen, talking to Mike in various ways and finally joining. Recently replaced the stock ECU chip with a TT chip. I would never go back, it gives me an extra edge and better gas mileage. Pictures to follow below... (stages from beginning to current)

I saw this when it was just the first post and sorry dude, I thought it was a joke. The subs/amp/jetta banner/cheapo universal fogs... I really thought it was a joke. It brought me back to high school when everyone did the same things to their Grand Am's and Cavaliers/Berettas. I'm glad you ditched the banner/fogs. Those were super lame. Now you're headed in a good direction. Keep it subtle, keep it euro.
Like Tony said, glad to see you've come a long ways forward from when you first got the car. It's looking a lot cleaner now. I especially love the euro plate.
Where did you get your smoked turns/dummies? Those are on my list of things to add as well.

www.goingfast.org $80 plus shipping.
They are great if you don't have fogs, I didn't like the look of amber on my car so i went with these. 2  for them though. I'll do a DIY on how to get them in the NA bumpers, It was easy.

That would be slick. I'd appreciate the DIY on it. I was looking at getting them from GoingFast originally, so it's good to hear somebody else got the lights through them.

that was a bad picture:
here's what they normallly look like:
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z71/vdubjettaiii/thebestpicsevEr009.jpg
they only light up the front part, not the rectangular shape in the back

Yeah - I know what it looks like. I think it looks better with no amber lights at all. The tinted sidemarkers get rid of the amber lens, but when the car is running you still see the amber lights.
I'm going to be shaving the rubstrips and sidemarkers all together, but in the meantime i've got colormatched lens, then i just took the bulbs out so it wouldn't try to light up amber through it if that makes sense.
To me, sidemarkers are ugly and shouldn't be there and you should do everything you can to make them as invisible as possible.
Your call though.

I hear what you're saying exactly. The Hella smoked sidemarkers I have in my bumper look awesome...when they're not lit up. I guess I never thought about just unplugging them.
One of the main things I love about European bumpers is that they don't have sidemarkers....

I like my sidemarkers lit up, i think every bulb and bub harness has a right to do its job. I was thinking about wiring it so that it blinked but i hear its a pain.

OH, they arn't amber either, just the regular yellowish tint of a halogen bulb now, no amber is in the front of the car, now to work in the rear... I installed a rear STRUT bar, and maybe it works, maybe it doesn't, but it sure looks cool. Super easy install. Pics up tomorrow!

You mean rear strut bar, right? ;) You definitely be able to tell the difference if it was a rear sway bar. Strut bars tie the strut towers together. Sway bars tie the lower suspension points together.

That's awesome man, congrats! You're going to love it. I may look into that rear bar after hearing how much you like it. Can you post some DIY instructions?
Dubjetta///
09-28-2007, 10:48 PM
Instructions for Rear upper strut tower bar:
1. Get 48" of 1" diameter sqaure steel/aluminum beam (Home Depot has it precut)
2. Get two 2" u-clamps, get long arms w/ threads, if anything you'll just have to cut them down, no biggie.
3. Turn on some motivation music (i chose some anberlin and From Autumn to Ashes) :tu:
4. move front seats forward to get the rear seat down. get the trunkspace flat so you can almost lay down in there
5. Pull up the carpeting of the rear shelf, and cut the carpeting covering the top of the rear shocks...
6. Put in the u-clamps in "feet first" and rotate the feet outwards towards the c-pillars, you'll have to push the c-pillar plastic in so the clamps rotate all the way around so that the feet are towards you.
7.repeat step 6 for the other side.....
8. Insert the beam onto the small shelfs behind the seat lock bar...
9. Make sure that the holes you cut in the beam line up with the clamp ends and insert..put the flat metal protector onto the clamp ends and then start to tighten the nuts....
10.^make sure that you do both sides a little at a time making sure that the beam comes into the top of the shock mount evenly, otherwise it won't be fun to redo the tightening.
11. Before all this, put the clamps in like stated above, also put the beam in, and make it even on both sides, it will just clear the width so just measure it out, as even as possible on both the passenger and driver's side. mark with a permanent marker where to drill the holes.
Caution: When drilling, obviously make sure that you drill as straight through as possible...this should be easy, also just rotate the drill around making a bigger hole so that if any mis-measurement. NOW go to step one and install your "HOMEBREW" rear strut tower bar.....

Becuase these springs are actually for a vr6 they don't look all that lowered in the front. i need to get vr6 spring hats for the front struts and then it will look even. i wish i had a picture of front wheel well before the drop. IT WAS HUGE, now it isn't all that big. In some pictures it looks bigger than others. Here's the best comparison i have seen as its almost the same picture.....

it is about half of what it originally was...haha, funny thing is, i want my car lower now, but i know i can't afford it nor would it be practical. I do like it way better though, in case you didn't know.
Ah, I see what you're talking about. I guess it is lower, just not as low as I had expected. What sort of drop did those springs give you?
I think I'm just used to seeing 60/40 kits where the drop is not even in both the front and the back, so it helps to eliminate the wheel gap. For example, if the car had reverse rake before and you drop the car 50mm F/R, it still has reverse rake, it just sits lower. When you drop the front 60mm and the rear 40mm, then you even out or get rid of the reverse rake altogether.
Hopefully it will sit better with your other spring hats.
Dubjetta///

Your drop looks really good but yeah the front needs to drop a *lil* more to look right. Instead of buying the spring hats why don't you just throw a VR6 in there and call it a day?

thanks mike. in all seriousness though the Jetta has had its progression..go to the first page if you haven't seen it already. I got into cars during the F&F era, so you can see that it was a bit leaned toward ricer in the early stages. Now that i'm in a Volkswagen car club that travels to Treffen and shows like that, i've realized that it wasn't what i wanted in my car anymore. When i got into the club, i'm sure many were like :gtfo: , but i stuck in there, saved some money and am werkin' on it. Hopefully by next spring she'll be in the condition i want her in. Possibly a respray on the car if i can afford it would be killer! and some 16" wheels would do a lot of good. but, that's next year and i have to save up a bit. Thanks for the comments people, keep them coming.

Either all green, or bottom strip green, and the top part black
bottom strip green, and the top part black
This is the early style US grill, correct? Basically a badgeless three-bar with the metal strip along the bottom? I say do the bottom metal strip green and the top section black. :tu:

I know a TON of people leave the top part black and i love that look, but IDK, Mike, its almost a early jetta grill, its just a 1 piece, budget kept me from going to crazy, but my friend has the same one, and it looks fine, i'm thinkin' bottom strip green top flat black. almost 90% sure now...

I realize those two cars both painted the grill like that, but as a Mk3 guy I can still spot it. I'm not a big fan of that look. If that's the look you want, I'd suggest getting an early US 2-piece grill and making it badgeless. If you stick with the grill you have, just paint it all green.
pretty sure its the same car just different periods of modification. Any last thoughts about my grill, going in for paint prolly next week.
Actually, both of those are different cars. Like justin said, the first one is dabble (VR6) and the second one has a 1.8T swap.
The second has also become a Jetta coupe recently courtesy of Reflex Tuning: http://www.reflextuning.com/projects/jettacoupe.html

alright my bad, but i was really just looking at the grill. IMO, i think it looks alright. Jetta Coupe FTL, not a fan at all, but to each there own, def. looks clean though. Again I think it will be way less noticeable with my color car. If i don't like it i can always get it painted again, that's nto a big deal. I'm also going to look for the same grill i had and do the flat bl. top green bottom....just so i can switch it up if i want.

Do it mike that would look killer. Although to really pull the front end off you may have to also have smoked turns/fogs/whateverthosethingsaredownthereonthemk3's to match the headlights.

same online store as those dummies. GOINGFAST. THEY ARE ACTUAL E-Codes too! CHEAP but you will have to mod the rad. support to fit these in. They have a city light, and when they say they include a wiring harness, they really don't so you'll have to either mock it up, or buy some, along with the brackets to fit the e-codes in correctly.
There are instructions on Vortex for making those brackets. It's basically just a piece of metal bent up in a couple places. I've read about modding the radiator support as well. I think I'd rather do that than put in a euro rad support and have to unhook the A/C system.
I'll have to check out the ecodes from GoingFast. That's who I got my early Vento grill and rear euro plate tub from.

Still Debating whether to leave the headlights as is for winter, joey mod them for the winter, or put in the e-codes now...... I think that'd be a fun spring project to get me pumped for the next season.

Thanks meister, i'm waiting on mike for the euro-tub. the badge is not high on my priority list currently but will get done. As far as the tails, i think they pull together the back end real well seen as i've gotten rid of any color with the lights off besides the car paint, and black. I always see everyone getting GLX tails and they are getting played. Plus for $110 shipped on the lights, i couldn't argue. Thanks for the compliments everyone. I'll keep this updated. Even if i just put gas in it. ;) I did upgrade to Premium due to a little knocking with 87 and a TT chip. No worries, all is good. PCV was also replaced tonight. No more peanut butter.... (ask me what it is if you don't know)
:germany:
OH, can't forget :toh:
Dubjetta///

Seem to be getting some poor gas mileage lately with Premium. :(. Maybe due to the higher cost i'm watching the needle more closely, but that first half of the tank only took 130 miles. Stock intake for now, exhuast and TT chip. I assume I can attribute the bad O2 sensor for some of it, but that seems like a large drop. Any mk3 guys with info about where the needle falls the fastest on there car?
The last quarter tank goes fast, but like some others have been discussing in other threads, I think part of the bad mileage just comes with the winter time. I know that running your A/C all the time can decrease your gas mileage, perhaps running the heater all the time does the same?
I get approximately 150 miles on the first 1/2 tank of gas, depending on how I'm driving.
OrangeDUB

Your o2 sensor (if it is the first one) would have a huge part in gas mileage as well! intake should not affect gas mileage... (or minimally if any)

Alright thanks guys. I think I am being a little bit paranoid, but spending that measly $2.60 more per 13 gallons isn't much, maybe i'm just stressin'. Mike that was a helpful comparison that's about what I am at. As far as the O2 sensor, maybe it's finally being "that guy". I've had the CEL come on before at around 80mph and when i would hit the gas it would go away. I'm going to clean my Mass Airflow sensor hopefully tomorrow at work and then check out the price on the O2 sensor, def. not the greatest of timing for this.... :banghead:
I'm going to clean my Mass Airflow sensor hopefully tomorrow at work and then check out the price on the O2 sensor
I did a cleaning on my MAF several months ago and it was really nasty. That would be a good place to start.
Also, if you have to order new O2 sensors, get them from German Auto Parts:
http://www.germanautoparts.com/Volkswagen/Jetta/Exhaust/152/11
Front O2 sensor $89.46
Rear O2 sensor $125.40
I just finally ordered a TT high flow cat and a rear O2 sensor to fix my car. It's been running a constant CEL for months now after my original cat blew up and kept my car from running right.

Stick with the oem style O2 sensors like the ones from that site. I have seen too many issues with going with after market O2 sensors.

Bosche o2 sensor FTW! Or you just might be changing it again a little too soon...
Just replace the first one (bank 1) if it's throwing a code or you think it needs to be replaced.
The second one has NOTHING to do with your a/f mixing. It will only throw a code it it's bad or your cat's not burning up enough fuel.
MAF gets nasty from oiled filters... AEM uses dry-flow oil-less for that reason. :tu:
Putter

...and so does every OEM I've ever seen. Oiled filters are a disaster with hot wire MAF's.

HA, thanks bro, that means a lot. As far as the roof rack, i pulled it off for the time being becuase i don't have any attachments for it and I'm saving on gas believe it or not. I'm looking into baskets only because of funtionality.

The fairing looks good. I think I understand what the difference is between the 555 and the 871 now. The 871 seems to be a bit smaller and mounts farther back on the roof. The 555 fairing sits closer to the windshield and uses brackets to attach to the load bars.
