So my check engine light was on when I started my car Friday morning. It was perfectly fine Thrusday night when I drove it home. So tongiht when I got home from work I tried to use the flash method to check it. I did everything per the Bentley. All it does is make the light go off while the key is still on. I can try to clear it and it does the same thing. Anyone have any clues on what I am doing wrong, or anyone in Ames have a VAGCOM and some time this weekend? I am using a 2" piece of 16 ga speaker wire for my jumper between ports 4 and 15 as the book says to.

95 2.0L BTW

My CEL is always on and I have just learned to live with it, lol. I tell people that if it ever turns off I know something must be wrong.

But yeah, wood_e ought to have a VAG-COM up there in Ames, otherwise there are two in Des Moines plus I believe vwmeister has one over in Waterloo. :tu:

OK, so my car died yet AGAIN tonight!!!!! About 30 mins before the rain hit. I was at a stop light and it turned green, went to begin moving and it died, and did not restart. While waiting for friends to help push it the bolck or so into a parking lot the skys broke open and everything was soaked. SO, I didn't get to do much diagnosis. BUT, I am am down to 3 things it could be. And only 2 that I know would be humidity sensative. 1. The fuel pump, the car has 163K mi on it and I'm not sure its ever been changed. 2. The iginition coil, somethign I have suspected for a while but its kind of expensive so I've been holding off. 3. The computer, this would piss me off severly because I'm sure its even more expensive than the damned coil and just flat out sucks.

Please let me know if you have any thoughts on my POS!! Certainly debating a different MK3 and doing a LOT of parts swapping.

Sorry my OBD2 VAG cable isn't of any help. Your coolant temp sensor may be to blame for the stalling as well. They're cheap to repalce so it's worth a shot.

coolant temp? Please explain, it might point me in a better direction.

There's a coolant temp sensor on VWs/Audis that tells the ECU how hot the coolant is. Sometimes if this sensor is crapped out the car will stall and not restart. They're a cheap part to replace and it's worth a try...

Oh so when they crap, they read hot. I got you.

But I took the coil off today and was inspecting it. I found a crack. Covered it in dielectric grease and went to start it, but the battery was too wore down from cranking last night. So I will update this later tonight once the battery is charged and I get out of work.

I think the newest version of the coolant temp sensor is referred to as the "green top sensor", I have heard of lots of people having issues (mine had to be replaced) with older versions. Its pretty cheap insurance even if your current one is not bad.

If your ignition coil is cracked (even the smallest crack) and gets any kind of moisture inside it will cause the car to misfire/die. I had this happen to me on our GTG over in Atlantic when it was snowing/sleeting like crazy. It happened again in a heavy rain.

I got my coil from GermanAutoParts.com for about $70 I think.

The green top sensor has a rounded connector. Older Audis and VWs have a square connector so they should use the blue sensor.

Rock auto has coils from $60
