Iowa City GTG :: Sunday, September 9th

Join us on Sunday, September 9th in Iowa City for what looks to be the largest PKG GTG so far. The plan is for everyone to meet at Sugar Bottom at noon.

Address:
2192 Mehaffey Bridge Rd
Solon, IA 52333

There will be no PKG sponsored "cruise" to the park but you are welcome to group together and safely caravan there!

Please bring your own meat/side/drinks and we will grill out for lunch. Plan to stay for the afternoon and enjoy a day with all of your PKG brethren. We will have stickers, cards and the few shirts still remaining available for purchase. You can also sign up for a PKG Premium Membership at this event.

PM a staff member if you have questions.

I think a lot of people are between an hour to 2 hours of driving time (WDM to Iowa City takes me around an hour and half) so I was thinking we should meet up around 11ish. How does that sound to everyone?

I was hoping for a little bit later than 11am. Possibly noon? I guess I could always just show up late.

Also, speaking of meeting times, are we planning on all eating lunch somewhere? cooking out?

berserker
07-27-2007, 06:30 PM
I think it might be a good idea to go to some unsuspecting restaurant waiting for the noon rush and have 20 to 30 hungry PKGers.

No really, since its noon it might work out to meet at a place to eat, grub up, and go to the place?

I can talk to a few restaurants that I have worked with in the past. I bet i could setup a buffet or menu lunch, and get a little discount for everyone. Or we could always reserve a shelter and grill out at sugar bottom.

Lets plan on meeting at noon....If we do the restaurant...it is right off of the interstate and really easy to find :hungry:

Either way, soda is not good for you. It increases the risk of diabetes and forming heart disease. Both of which are in my family history.

Lately I've been addicted to Monster and Full Throttle energy drinks, which are pretty much sodas.

At the big official ones I would tend to lean towards no drinking, as we will probably be out cruising around as well. Drinking + driving = bad. I know one or two generally doesn't matter, but I would hate to have someone get into a fender bender at a GTG and have alcohol be the root cause.

Well said. I think the staff has agreed that at our official GTGs we would like alcohol left out. This is especially important for times like the Iowa City GTG where we will be out and cruising around. It wouldn't be good for someone to get into trouble and it definitely wouldn't look good for the gruppe.

I like this idea. Bring your own meat/drinks/chips etc. and I'm sure people will be willing to share if needed.

And as far as the charcoal/lighter fluid goes, I think the club ought to be able to pick that up with the funds we have raised thus far. See, all of that cool PKG gear you buy DOES go towards things for the gruppe. ;) :D

Hey I'm off work on Sundays; count me in! Anyone worked out plans for where/when Des Moiners might meet to drive to IC together?

Also, I have an idea for a cruise route. Last time I was in IC, I visited a buddy of mine who is a bicycler, and he showed me a route he likes to ride on. Very pretty, lots of hills and twisties, very few intersections/stops/traffic. Start off on N. Dodge St., turn north on Summit St. which turns into Prarie du Chien Rd., follow that for a while then take a right onto Newport Rd., then turn left on Sugar Bottom Rd., then left again on Mehaffey Bridge Rd., then left onto Dubuque St. and back into IC. About a half hour drive in total. If the plan is still to meet around 11a, maybe everyone could meet somewhere in downtown and then drive together on this route as far as Sugar Bottom for the cookout.

This sounds like a cool idea. Not familiar with the route, but it sounds like you are. ;)

That route shares a few roads, but if I could add a little to it that would be great :tu:
I still don't have my internet hooked up due to problems with Qwest, (but my DirecTV is hooked up, and DiscoveryHD > me).

I will have to work the night before so I doubt I will be going out, not that I really drink anyway, so to those of you who are :beerglass:!

Updates to come!

I believe the consensus is to meet at Sugar Bottom, but I don't think anything further has been finalized. There was talk about everyone arriving around 11 or 12 that day though.
Is this the same thing you are talking about?

Sugar Bottom Campground:319-624-2102 2192 Mehaffey Bridge Rd NE Solon, IA 52333, US

We'll need an exact address for us mapquesters.

I'm not sure if that is the place. Steve (DubWalkn) was the one who mentioned the location. I'll need the address too because I'll be driving from Muscatine that weekend.

My plan was that we will meet right off exit 244 on I-80, possibly at lower city park in Iowa City. From here we will go for the cruise to our final location, being sugar bottom.

I will get exact directions to sugar bottom, for any late comers. Sound good?

I'm not, actually - I just remembered the names of Newport and Sugar Bottom roads, and figured the rest of it out using Google Maps. I only drove on it the one time, but it's pretty sweet.:drive: If DSM'ers are going to go in a group, where/what time should we all meet?

Its looking pretty good for me to go... not 100% but I should be able to make it :)

The route sounds like a fun idea. I just wanted to chime in on it real quick...

We have A LOT of cars... its really difficult to safely run a route with a huge group like this. I don't mean to be the Devil's Advocate or anything - this route sounds like its a blast but I would reccomend the pace stays reasonable. I've set up a lot of drives in MN and whenever there are more than 8 cars in a group for a really spirited drive its just too dangerous.

I'm not saying you guys shouldn't do it - routes are AWESOME. I'm just saying keep it to like... 10 over ... especially if there is other traffic on the road :)

Anyway I'm not trying to sound negative at all... just sharing my experience! After seeing a stock mkIV GTI slide off the road and get totaled - the last thing I wanted to see is someone getting hurt. These drives are fun and its very easy to become overly confident :)

Hey MrFlippant - you can click and drag routes on Google Maps - its an awesome feature. Maybe you can plan out the route for us?

I think we learned that lesson at the RFD.. I'm sure the gruppe leaders will keep a safe pace.

That's a good idea; I'll do it when I get home so I can do a screen capture and post the finished product. As for speed, I can't remember for sure but I think the posted limit for most of that route is at least 40 or 50 mph anyhow, and it's twisty enough that I wasn't keen on going too much over that. Plus, for the most part it's just a two-lane asphalt road with no shoulder, so there's not a lot of room for monkey business. I managed to take a couple corners sideways, though :)

Edit: NVM on the screen capture; here's a link right to the map: Newport/Sugar Bottom Route (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=202+e+washington+st&daddr=41.660172,-91.522889+to:Prairie+du+Chien+Rd+%4041.681310,+-91.521320+to:2192+Mehaffey+Bridge+Rd&mrcr=0,1&mrsp=1&sz=18&mra=dme&sll=41.660237,-91.523173&sspn=0.002918,0.004989&ie=UTF8&ll=41.719824,-91.527786&spn=0.186556,0.31929&z=12&om=1)

I used the Java House as the starting point, and Sugar Bottom Campground as the ending point.

That would be a good spot. Lots of space to park all the cars.

However, I won't be driving over with everybody. I'll already be in the area that weekend for a wedding. I will be driving back to Des Moines with everyone though. :drive:

The route I am planning has mimimal traffic, and consists of a few two lane highways (55mph). The one road I am questionable about is a crazy blacktop that is twisty as all hell, and I believe it is a 35mph. On this road we must cruise at 35 max because of the limited visibility. If some people want to go back out for some spirited driving, I can show you good roads for this, (my favorite stress reliever).

As for entering the park, the road is rediculous, and with a large group I say keep it under 25mph, no need to speed forr reallzz.

If we meet at lower city park off of Dubuque street (one mile south of the interstate exit) we can then cruise to our final location.

So meet at lower city park at 11:00am
Depart from lower city park at 11:30am
Arrive at Sugar Bottom around 12:00-12:15pm
Grub down and tell campfire stories all afternoon

Oh, two of my VW friends from school are attending, one MKV Jetta, and one MKIV GTI. COUNT IT!!!
