Cedar Rapids Window Tint GTG

So Anchovi777 has agreed that we should do a window tint gtg. We will be using the shop here in dubuque at 3262 dodge st. We need to set up a time to do it. Because of the junkyard next to us owning the building kleinergti1 and myself are in it will probably be best to do it on a Sunday when the junkyard is closed so we don't interfere with their business affairs. Then we will have enough parking for everyone and don't have to worry about anyone bothering us. Vote for the best day that will work for you and hopefully we can get this set up. I don't know how anchovi777 wants to do this so he can chime in. He will need the car info so he can have all the tint precut and maybe a deposit? Anyways here are the options.

Guys I will update this first post so we have an easily accessible list of what everyone's bringing and what they want. If something isn't correct, please post it up and we will update this! :tu:

Okay here is how you get to the party palace:
Take the Boyson Rd. exit and head east.

Very close to the interstate is a stoplight with handimart at the corner. This is where Boyson Rd. intersects with Center Point Rd.

You will want to take a left at the light so you're heading north on Center Point Rd.

You go for about 2 miles until it seems like you're kind of getting out of the city, then look for a big industrial tan CEC building on your right hand side. Take a left just after CEC.

Now you're going west on Tower Terrace Rd. heading past a trailer park. you will drive on an overpass on 380 and my driveway is the first one on the right! Careful of the potholes, i have an old gravel driveway.

The untinting is a lot more complicated and is very time consuming.. gotta use ammonia and pray for sunshine.

I'll give Anthony a :bump: and make him check the thread and answer everybody's questions.

i'm sure you would have to cut his tint on the car given that all our cars are practically the same and the tint will be pre-cut.

The lightest tnt he can do is 50%.. which is barely noticible at all.. I'd suggest 35%.

Tint ranges from lightest to darkest:

50%, 35%, 20%, 15%, 5%

kliener and or bwolfgti.. about the shop, is there anyway you guys could get ahold of a big piece of glass, (approx. 45x75 is what i have at work) or is there a big window in the shop in the area we will be tinting. this will help out DRAMATICALLY and will make things move quicker.

casey.. if you can get all or a majority of your tint off it would be very helpful, spray it with straight ammonia on a hot sunny day, and put black trash bags over it. in an hour er so go out and pick at the corner of it and try and peel it off, if it all comes off without the adhesive.. most excellent if not.. grab a razor blade and like.. windex and spray and scrape.. lol.

yea i can get a piece of glass. how thick you need? 1/8" be thick enough?

Ok I'll give it a try this weekend if I have time. I know 50% is light but I like just a lightly tinted look. And I've been through having to pay ticket after ticket to have nice dark windows. ;)

Sweet!! What Anthony will probably do is get your jetta going first thing, let it stand for aw hile, and I'll probably start stripping the tint while he continues tinting.. I stripped my GTI and it was noo fun but I can do a good job of it :D

And now the not so good news... i can't do it on the 2nd. a family wedding in chicago has came up and i need to attend that. soo... we need to vote on a different date, one that everyone can still make it to. soo.. anytime in august works really except for the 17-19 which most of us are goin to treffen!! and pretty much anytime in sept.! i know it would be sweet to get everyones rides done before the iowa city gtg. which is sept. 9th.... but if not its cool we will get em done, sorry if this is causing any innconvenience with anyone... but we can figure it out!!

It is a very high quality film that is sold only to customers that have a certain kind of cut plotter or something. I'll prompt him to check the thread asap and give you a price quote. Do you want all the way around, or just back window and rear sides?

Only other thing I can tell you that I remember about the tint is that it is metallic and doesn't have dyes in it, therefore will not fade or change color as cheap tints you can buy at the store... It is verry expensive stuff. It is NOT anything you could just go out and buy.

the type of tint is digitint and its a metallic based tint not ink or dye based like the cheap crap you get at auto zone, etc. it is a 99.9% uv protectent high quality film. digitint is based out of tulsa, oklahoma and is one of the top tint suppliers in the U.S.

i do all solid back windows no strips, and except for the selected few no 3rd brake cut outs... which looks tacky as hell. all the cuts are cut specifically for your car!! i strive to make every install as perfect as possible with no dirt, contaminents etc... ill update everyone on what else to do at the GTG as far as care, etc.

He said something a couple pages about about how his favourite tint is 15%, so I figured he could do it. But I've been thinking about it some more and as I understand it, the IA tint law says you can go as dark as you want on the back windows, but no darker than 70% on the fronts. This is why I only wanted to do the b-pillars back.

But then I was looking at some pics of other B5 A4's with tint, and saw one that was 35% all around except the windshield. I like the all around look much better than just the rears, and 35% looks like a good balance - so does anyone know if DSM cops are hardasses about front window tints?

Just a warning, 20% and darker (15 and 5%) is not for everybody. 35% tends to be the most popular. I have 20% and black interior and it is too dark for my liking at times.

He can do 50%, 35%, 20%, 15%, and 5%.

And as far as I know, tint on the front windows AT ALL is illegal. I was arguing with the officer I got my tint ticket in my Jetta for (5%), and he said that even if I had a plastic wrap on my window would be illegal as far as Iowa law goes. (Front windows, mind you.)

iowa laws are 70% in the front...BUT most cars come with some tint on the front windows, so you have to add the factory tint to the film that you add to get the real percentage. so in some cases, yes, even plastic wrap would be illegal, but you can get it down to 70% to be legal....

with that said....i have 20% metallic and i havnt been harassed exept for the one time i was pulled over because of front plate and speeding...but i didnt get any tickets...or warnings...

so i dont really think many cops are too aggressive about it...but thats just from my expirence...and i usually drive around town with my front windows down anyway....

yep as abby stated above those are the shades that i have. i dont need a deposit, just come with your car and cash in hand. i will start cutting out all the tint toward the end of this week. so i need to know for sure that the people listed are gonna do it.

As for start time, well this is quite a few cars, so i suppose we should start fairly early. and if you could prep up the glass, that would be super sweet.

Prep Details:

try to have your car as clean as possible, and if you have a 3rd break light that is really close or touching the back glass, it might be better to take the back deck out. so if anyone has that itll save some time if you do it before. the only cars i see that maybe being a problem on is the A4 and Passat's but i can look at em and if i can do it without takin it out great!

Okay guys/gals, good news and bad news.

The bad news: Mike and Ben aren't going to be able to host the tint GTG at their shop due to a few circumstances.

The good news: I have agreed to allow the tint GTG to happen at my house after discussing the situation with Ben and Anthony.

I know that half the attendees were going to be Dubuque residents so I know that this news may not be pleasant for you guys. BUT you only have to drive for an hour and you're still getting one heck of a deal on tint if you want to look at it that way. I hope everyone still shows up!

BTW I am throwing a kegger the night before so anybody that wants to come over saturday night and and party it up can crash at my place, you're more than welcome! I plan on grilling out and yes there should be sweetcorn. :tu:

Okay here is how you get to the party palace:
Take the Boyson Rd. exit and head east.

Very close to the interstate is a stoplight with handimart at the corner. This is where Boyson Rd. intersects with Center Point Rd.

You will want to take a left at the light so you're heading north on Center Point Rd.

You go for about 2 miles until it seems like you're kind of getting out of the city, then look for a big industrial tan CEC building on your right hand side. Take a left just after CEC.

Now you're going west on Tower Terrace Rd. heading past a trailer park. you will drive on an overpass on 380 and my driveway is the first one on the right! Careful of the potholes, i have an old gravel driveway.
