So the other day I came home and my computer was off, even though I left it on. When I ied to start it up, the lcd on my case came on along with the fans, but I never got the "beep", and my monitor never came on. Ive tried a couple more times since, with no luck. My buddy was supposed to come swap out the power supply with a spare he had, but I cant get ahold of him

Any ideas??

power supply is fine if it comes on. Is your sound and video built on to the motherboard or seperate? Take all your cards out except your video and see if you get further. Then put one back at a time to see which one is bad. If just having your video card in it does the same pull that out and see if you can hear the system boot further without the video card

When my mother board was bad the computer would try to power up and then just shut down. The monitor would come on but show nothing.

Could be mobo, but try what Twooly suggested first. Get it down to barebones and try swapping vid cards if it isn't onboard. It also could be the RAM. Swap that out too if the barebones thing doesn't work.

One way to diagnose the issue... is most MOBOs have a diagnostic test. Pull everything out including the memory. only have the speakers plugged in. try powering up and see what happens. if the board has a continuous circuit throughout it will probably have some voice that comes on and tells you what the issue is. if it doesn't it could be that the board is bad. or that there is just a bad ground. You could also try pulling the board out, cleaning all contact points with the case and hooking everything back up. Generally though that is why nothing would come on just out of nowhere. If it were the Ram, the vide card would still boot up because it runs off its own RAM supply and doesn't utilize the board's RAM.. it was probably hit the CMOS check and fail on the ram test. how old is the computer anyways? My vista rating on my computer is a 4.1 and I purchased the parts about 2 years ago and then just upgraded the video card recently... My point being is built the entire computer w/ case and flat panel lcd, keyboard & mouse... and after rebates it cost around 800.00... Granted that is money you could be dumping into your car, but not bad for a PC anymore.... Hopefully that helps... feel free to email with any questions.
