I am thinking i wanna put some more noise in the GLI, I of course have access to the equipment but am wondering what I should throw in it? I want loud but I dont want a giant speaker box in my trunk, although I do like the idea of subs

that's because GTIs have no trunk space. even with a sub box in Adam's GLI, he would still have more room in his boot than you, lol...... :D :tu:

How much are you wanting to spend?
im happy with the head unit, so im just looking for amps/speakers i would think... I can get a pretty great price on that stuff so i dont think that will be much of an issue, I def would like to stay under a grand and under 500 would be awesome.

If you're getting a good discount then you could prob get nicer speakers all around then two 10" subs, amped seperately, for under $500. Pioneer ftw!

Replace the head unit. You will be amazed how much better the stock speakers will sound. I replaced everything but my rear speakers. Everyone who has replaced the oem head unit on the MKV has commented this. I have a single 10" in my hatch. An Alpine Type R powered by a mono Alpine pushing 650 watts to the sub. Plenty for me. Get a good set of speakers.....I like the Alpine Type S alot, especially amplified. Rainbow makes a set for the MKV GTI but I don't know if it is the same setup in the GLI. If so and you can get a good deal...get em. They sound great from what I hear from the European guys. If you replace the speakers you will need to build out the mounting area for aftermarket speakers on the door.....if the GLI setup is the same as a GTI. All in all, if you get some great speakers you wont even need a sub unless you want really deep lows. I have put in Alpine Type X components, front and rear in a MKIV Jetta and the lows were amazing. The MKV GTI was not set up for great sound imaging at all. I have my work cut out for me in my car. Not going to do anything till it gets warmer out. Plastic has a tendancy to break when it is cold.....

Ditch the spare glass the tub and you have a hole to put your subs fuckerlook for something with a small box size
get an audio control line output converter for best sound we got them sitting around
you need to figure out your door speaker size
pioneer=fail
Bose in my BMW=fail more then Peeoneer
and this snow thing is annoying

We replace more factory Infinity and Bose systems than any other factory system at work. The great thing about the Bose systems is that if you want to replace a speaker with aftermarket......the whole system has to be replaced. I would normally say leave the headunit alone when talking to someone but these cars are the exception to the rule. Generally people want to replace the headunit because they think it will improve the sound quality in their car. Actually it is more of a mental thing, you can see the new headunit as apposed to speakers which are hidden behind the doors. The MKV is the exception to the rule though. Many have replaced the factory headunit and received improved sound. Also, by using a VAGCOM we can modify the factory headunit to eliminate things such as soft clipping. The speakers in the MKV GTI are over sized 7" in the lower door, 3" shallow in the upper door, and tweeter. I still don't know if the GTI and GLI have the same speaker locations and setup. As mentioned above stay away from Pioneer, also Sony, and Kenwood. Alpine is good as are higher model lines of Rockford and Infinity. Quarts used to be awesome but I haven't kept up on them.

Actually you dont have to replace the head on the BMW when you ditch the bose system thier DSP module has a variable resistance system which allows for a difference in speakers without changing anything else...pertty neat deal but a need to do something with the BMW sometime soon...

with the proper interface you wont even know the difference between stock and aftermarket HU plus you can keep steering wheel integration

I have a flip out with an Alpine center channel below it. Fills in rather nicely...like it was ment for the car. That's cool that the BMW has the feature to keep the headunit. There are some cool features you can do with a vagcom..like test each speaker individualy through differant ranges and mess with some settings. After you get your speakers in, which the 3" is actually a 4" in the door, let me know and we can mess around with the vagcom to get the right settings for the radio.

No I am saying if you use the proper amplifier interfaces you dont need to change your stock head out

Very true. I think there is something called a clean sweep. It is an interfae that cleans up the preamp signals from the headunit. The nice thing with the MKV is that you can use the VAGCOM to modify certain sound settings on the radio. But a good clean amp will sound great in your car. Get a good 4 channel....and I mean good. Not Pioneer or Sony.

I'm gonna have to say go with Head's idea, so far he has managed to get FAR better sound out of at least 75% of his vehicles, minus the Mustang in HS, that just sucked jeff...but he has come quite a way, most importantly, and I was just thinking about this the other day too, he has utilized a factory HU in almost every application.. so not to blow his ego up too much, but he's right, stick with factory head unit modified, and then create your masterpiece blowing the money on the fun stuff...then, if possible, FORD AND GARLAND....their not the best cause theyre the oldest, theyre the oldest cause theyre the best!
lastly, ADAM, I know what kind of music you listen to, no matter what you do, if you go with a sub option, get something either small, or with a frikin HUGE magnet, RANCID and AFI blow with a giant sub with no magnet...I learned that back in the day with a RF HX2 and a 160a2 amp, I'd get 159db out of it, but it sounded like two hippos fucking, no shit, I know......?
Not to mention, once in HS Jeff and Pete put a 15 inch PYLE in my CRX to see what would happen....most of the time I just let Charlie ride on it, nothings funnier than a dog on a sub!

Ford and Garland is a good Mom and Pop shop. We send people there since we aren't allowed to do custom work. Hendo works in the install bay that I now over see.....again. Best Buy changes their mind too many times on how to do their management structure. I can tell you from personal experiance that the head unit on the MKV is the weak link in the audio system. Check on the vortex and golfmkv forum and you will see it all over the place. The factory headunit had to be tweaked with a vagcom. Ford and Garland can't do that. I am sure that if you want help installing the system we can do another gtg at the Loccusst Garage. LOL I am not slamming on Ford and Garland at all but if you aren't looking for custom work I wouldn't go there. When the customer spends some money and goes beyond the typical deck we crank out some nice systems out of our bay. Keep the factory deck, but get it tuned.

Although one must admit the final variant of the mustang was pretty good I have the subs and amps pulled again trying to decide on the next version (v6) of the setup
Also desiging upgrades with Factory HU integration for the BMW and the Maserati currently
The Bimmer will probably be all blaupunkt gear
The Maser will be using OZ audio's new matrix series components at a grand a set retail I am damn glad I am a disitributor on this one but what other 6.5 components have accurate non distorted sound from 32hz-40khz these little fuckers pound on the low and sound beautiful up high I compared them with the top end units from Arc, Rainbow, Morel and Focal at CES and they decimate all...only issue is they sound like ass with less then 250 rms going to them...I guess I need to find space for a 500+ watt 4 channel somewhere without sacrificing the little trunk space I have

I had an entire OZ setup in my old Cougar. Matrix series 6.5 in the door and 4 an tweet in custom kick panel locations. I used 3 of the Matrix 250L 10" subs in a big ported box (I think it was 4.5 ft3), all run off some Zapco amps. Loved the sound.
Then I moved it all over to the (at that time) girlfriend's car, put the subs in an aperiodic membrane enclosure (built by hand), used 8's in the doors instead of 6.5's and used JL amps (the "slash" series had just come out). Sounded even better in that car, and to my knowledge its all still in there.... Sent her packing around 4 years ago and didn't even get the stereo components back, oh well.
