View Full Version : shorty shifter dilemma

Ok, so I rang in the new year out in the driveway (recall my garage hasn't gotten built yet) installing a neuspeed shorty shifter bracket. It has two settings, one for 30% reduction and one for 50% reduction. I like the 50% reduction one myself BUT if I use that one I can't use my 2lb. A3 weighted shift rod...I have to use the 1.5lb neuspeed shift rod, which I don't care for because it doesn't have the heft of the OE rod.

So here's the deal, do I keep the neuspeed shorty shift and suffer with the neuspeed weighted rod or do I keep the OE weighted shift rod and fab the OE shifter bracket to get a reduction of something approximating 40+%?

it's a tough call...besides the fact that my 2nd gear synchro is already cranky when it's cold out.

This is on the diesel junkwagen btw.

btw - happy new year...the snow is here, the ice is here and the salt wagons are out on the freeway! Funny thing...their blades are on the ground and there's nothing to plow

well, IMO, if your 2nd gear synchro is already giving you some trouble, and you like the heavier shift rod, i say just pull it out. however, if you think you can fab something up with the neuspeed bracket and still be able to use the heavier shift rod, go for it.

you can probably resell the neuspeed piece if you take it out, but on the other hand, you've already spent the money, so you might as well try to get it to work for you with your setup.

i guess i probably didn't make it any easier for you, lol.

id prolly keep the heavier shift rod and mod the shorty to work for it

I would try what Gee suggested.

I think I'm going to try what Gee said ;) Although I have to admit I really like the shorty combo, it's nice to move from gear to gear and only travel about an inch, but the extra half pound on the OE Mk3 shift rod makes a difference too over the neuspeed.

I haven't looked at it too much but the conflict is only with 3rd and maybe 5th gear so I might be able to find a solution.

Sooooo.....an update?

nothing new yet. I left the neuspeed stuff in there so far, it works good, and the throw is really nice when you use the 50% reduction. I've been looking at the VW weighted rod lying on the floor here for a while thinking I needed to do something with this but haven't.

Instead I've been running around Iowa picking up Caddy/diesel parts. I still have a bunch I need to go get but the brake lights are out on the Toyota  and I can't isolate the problem...looks like it might be brake light switch maybe. Anyway...can't drive it like that!

Unfortunately the weather is headed down the crapper so spending much time in the JY requires bundle-up clothing.

all for now I guess

Does the cruise work? Usually the cruise turn off when you brake is built into the brake switch on the pedal. If the cruise doesn't shut off then the switch is bad. Had that on my old TBird. More than likely the contact is bad or maybe it just needs to be adjusted.

It's a base truck, no cruise, no AC, basically was just a 1 ton deluxe with all weather pkg (mud flaps?) and split bench seat, tilt and radio. It doesn't even have a trip odometer! I wanted to get behind the driver kick panel today and check for voltage at the fuse but didn't have a chance...i hate working on this stuff upside down laying on the floor. I'll might try and check it yet tonight or tomorrow before the snow hits.

The manual I have is junk, has no wiring diagrams of value. I think that there should be voltage to the fuse (and beyond to brake light switch) all the time. Circuit completion is dictated by the switch only, since brake lights should work even with ignition off IIRC. I don't know why one side of the fuse was melty but it didn't blow the 15a fuse...go figure. I just hope the whole circuit didn't melt down for some reason. If it did would just have to run new wire it I guess.

thanks for the tips though
