I've done plenty of fiberglass repair , nothing from scratch though but as long as you make a wire mesh frame or something it should work. i have never worked w/ cf does it lay the same?
I might be able to help. are you coming to the gtg on feb 4th? i'd be willing to help if i can find the time, kids wife work dogs not really in that order, but you get it.

never mind i got the answer. here's a link or two

It seems that the process for carbon fiber is the same but different? :banghead :)
hows that for oxy moron.

I have done a pretty good amount of fiberglass work, but no CF work. One word of advice though, be careful with CF around the battery, CF conducts electricity

More words of advice/discouragement: It might be tough to get the pattern of CF that you do yourself to match with the Carbonio stuff, and you have to get a resin that dries clear as water for it to look right....

im basically going to cover the original part in CF, so basically no wire frame is needed i believe. I'm pretty new to this also and wanted to waste a couple bucks and seeing what i could do. I have no fears about the CF conducting electricity since its going to covered with resin anyways, so theres that layer of protection. With matching, i guess i'll have to see how that goes... haha if i can do this i might even put a layer of the carbon that i'm going to buy over the top of the Carbonio Intake to make it match. I also believe i can get an expoxy resin that dries clear. Ive seen people sand down the expoxy layer and then coat it with some clear coat.

more than one layer of apoxy will beneeded, wetsand between(lightly) then buff at end That is how i would do it

Mike what i've been doing is trying to find out dimentions on tires so i can design up some wheels. Thats the cool shit.

especially if you've got access to a big CNC machine.....you could be doing all sorts of custom parts. :D

so i picked up some CF today but seems like i got the 3K plain weaves and its a little too think and i dont think it will work. Too many curves on the cover, i would think 1K would do fine but cant seem to find it. :) i got a 36x48in sheet for $20 local (im in omaha rite now), so i guess if someone wants to cover something in CF that does not have to much curvature on it, i got some. just pm me. I think imma do my trunk liner thingy (between trunk and bumper) that silver/chrome piece you see on the a4s.

I usually get all my fiberglass supplies from www.shopmaninc.com and they have carbon fiber as well, but it seems as though supplies are down and its getting really hard to come by.... The stuff that would probably work is only being sold to people that have placed orders with them before, and I doubt my 10 yards of fiberglass mat would qualify me as able to purchase CF.... :(

edit I shouldn't try to spell before my morning coffee is completely in my system.

Imma see if i can get a hold of some resin and vaccum baggin material and try this out over my last week of break before school. and try to cover something with it the CF i have before i start doing my actual parts. anyone wanna try this out also for fun?

cadwiz

Try your oil cap or little parts like that, if it works you can epoxy them to the cap.

manguyen
12-29-2006, 11:36 AM
I was planning on doing it to the actual part, and not make a mold of it. Basically i was going to scuff up the part and then put the layer of epoxy down and lay on the CF and go through and smooth things out. Probably another layer of epoxy and vaccum bag it, take it out scuff up the epoxy layer to smooth up any defects and then hit it with some clear. does that sound about rite?

cadwiz
12-29-2006, 12:25 PM
YES BUT I WOULD JUST PUT ABOUT 3 OR 4 LAYERS OF EPOXY ON IT WET SAND BETWEEN AND SEE IF YOU CAN BUFF IT OUT. SHOULDN'T HAVE TO CLEAR IT . ALSO EVEN IF SCUFFED IT MAY NOT CEMICALLY BOND TO THE STOCK PIECE, LIKE AN ADHESEIVE WOULD.SO YOU MAY STILL NEED TO ADHERE IT TO THE STOCK PIECE.
aMOLD MAY BE THE ONLY WAY TO GO , TRIAL AND ERROR.
I'VE BEEN DOING BODY WORK SINCE I WAS ABOUT 12 AND THE ONLY TWO THINGS I LEARNED IS THAT YOU NEVER REALLY LEARN IT ALL AND THAT IF YOU'VE NEVER DONE IT BEFORE , IT WON'T WORK THE FIRST TIME UNLESS SOME ONE HELPING YOU HAS DONE IT BEFORE.:D

FYI: Cadwiz isn't yelling, he's just at work using Caps Lock. ;)

I watched a guy do cf on a box before. He used a ton of resin and just sanded like crazy. The resin might seal it to the part but then again your biggest issue really is going to be bubbles and particles that land on the resin while it is being pored. You have to do layers...don't worry about clear coat. It looked alright but man you have to be carefull and have it in a controlled environment.

lets buy another fast and carbon fiber it lol :D

this sounds like a tough thing todo but id be interested in helping, experimenting with it even tho i dont really know anything

haha why dont we all learn from trial and error at my expense. What can be better rite? I think for my first trial and error project, imma make PKG CF license plate frame and maybe some door sills.

hooray for trial and error, that sounds like the first time i had.... oh never mind:cool: :D

General overview on carbon

excellent how to on covering existing plastic with carbon

CF lays up a lot like glass you just need to make sure you don’t shift the weave too much on cosmetic pieces

manguyen -- i've no idea how i missed this thread. I didn't know that piece even existed, I'll be picking that up as soon as I get home :) I think an all CF bay would be very nice.

alright guys here the status of this. I dont know what to order so i just ordered a bunch of crap.

Sealant Tape
Some Bagging Film (afraid resin will stick to this)
Some Release Film
and Breather Fabric

So basicially anyone know how i should lay this down?

I have my piece, then should it be the breather fabric then the release and then the baggin film?

Fiberglass is actually really easy because you can sand off what you fuck up. However, I hear that CF is somewhat difficult (I've never tried) not because it's different to lay but because it's hard to get the "twill" uniform accross the piece.
