I never would have imagined owning a VW. I was raised on ChryCo products; my father worked for Plymouth and Dodge parts departments for 30 years.

BUT...

In all honesty I was in the market for an Accord coupe at the time, since my best friend bought one and I really liked it. My salesman had me look at the Passat and sit in it, but at the time I wasn't impressed. It turns out, from the mess I was in, the only way they could work a deal to get me out of the hole I was in was to give the Passat a second look. And man, I'm glad I did. :tu:

I took it out on the highway and I fell in love. It had more toys than all the previous cars I had combined. Power moonroof, heated leather seats, auto-leveling bi-xenons, side mirror that tilts down when in reverse so you can see how close you are, steering wheel mounted volume control, so on and so forth. When I was driving it out on the highway, I would be shocked if people couldn't hear me let out a big WOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...it was bliss and to this day it still is!

I was so excited and I wanted to take it home NOW. So I was late to work since I was signing all the paperwork.

As I said this is my first VW and I hope it won't be my last. It's been a huge learning curve for me since no one around me (at the time) knew a thing about VW's. But luckily I've had tremendous help from PassatWorld, the W8 Forum, and of course PKG!

So, here's a gallery of pictures I've taken in chronological order:

Very first pics...

Last summer I decided to do some work on my own, although it wasn't much. I pulled the DRL relay to save the bi-xenons (not a cheap bulb...I purchased mine at cost, and it was $160!) and also installed a euroswitch, which I absolutely love.

Pics taken after a wax and euroswitch install:

Last fall, I never thought I would see the day, but I did. As I was sitting patiently at a red light in Davenport, a guy not paying attention (instead to his kid and/or cell phone) hit me. At the time it was raining so I couldn't tell if there was damage. A week later i finally found some damage to the bumper. I called his insurance company and everything was handled fine. Before I move on, my lower trim has been starting to flake off (it was like that when I bought it). My W8, as you can see from the above pictures, had a grey trim on the bottom. Progressive (his insurance company) told me to ask the body shop to get an estimate on painting the lowers since I was going to have it painted anyway, they could cut me a good deal. (I was going to have it painted black to have the whole car match, but was going to have it done after winter.)

The body shop called me up later to tell me that my car is done and I can pick it up. However, the guy told me that "the flaking was getting really bad and we had to do something about it, so we painted the whole bumper black." I was pissed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! First of all, they didn't even ask me before they went and just painted the whole thing and not just the spot they were supposed to paint. Second of all, I have an all black bumper with lower grey sides and front, so it is going to look stupid. He offered to paint it grey again, but I was like screw it, b/c I was going to have it done anyway. (It wouldn't have cost me anything for them to paint it the way it was). I asked if he had an estimate done for the rest of the job and he said no, he will talk to me in the morning about that since he didn't have it done. I had my girlfriend go down to look at it since I was at work and she told me from the back it looks HOT, but couldn't see the whole thing. She talked to one of the painters and I guess what happened was when they masked off the bumper and took off the tape, the grey flaked off even more so they went and painted it anyway.

I stopped in the morning, and my baby was sitting outside. I was grinning from ear to ear...WOW, does it ever look nice all black!!

I went in to talk to the manager and owner and they were actually really nice about the whole thing. Turns out the previous owner spray painted the lower trim, so that's why it was flaking so badly. He offered to bring it back in and look at the other moldings to see what he could do and what the cost would be to match what they did to the back bumper. He told me worst case scenario, he would only charge me half if anything at all.

He called me later in the afternoon and apparently the side moldings are a different texture, almost woodgrain-like to where the silver was not going to come out. So he's not going to guarantee the life of the paint job they're going to do since the paint doesn't stick well. He told me I could buy new moldings, but it would be $325 (I figure apiece...). So...he told me just to keep the rental and he would pay for it, and he will paint the front and the sides at NO COST. I'm like...f**k yeah!!!

I guess you could say this "accident" was a blessing in disguise...

Pictures taken after the freshly-painted lowers were done:

The more heads turn and the more I drive the Passat, the more I fall in love with it.

Pics taken from my celly on a cold February morning...so cold that if you look close enough, there are icicles hanging from the lower grille. BRRR!

I never realized how much fun GTG's are until you go to one. I saw the pics all the time on PW, and I finally had the chance to go to the Dubuque GTG. I had so much fun, but it makes me want to spend more money on the car! :p

After the suspension GTG! ;) I also need to get the wheels refinished first, they've seen better days.

Thanks...I want to find out how to get the tips polished back to chrome, they're pretty tarnished after 71k miles.

UPDATE...

So, now that the Pie Plates are gone and the Fat 5's are on their way out, I've been looking at a few ideas for my next set of wheels in the spring (TAX RETURNS FTMFW), so here are my top considerations:

Flik Artics in either silver or black:

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h63/sirrangealot/Sunny6.jpg

Audi A8 reps:

Axis Supermesh (if I can find them, since they're discontinued):

Very nice man!

Are you planning on getting springs before wheels?

IMO I like the Audi A8 wheels and LM Reps the best - they would look oh so sick in 19" with a nice drop with lowering springs :). I also like the Flik Arctic's a lot! Personally I'm not a huge fan of black wheels with a polished lip on black cars... its a little played out.

Sounds like you have an excellent mod list planned! I vote for de-badging (how can you deny that sexy ass in that first pic?!), and paint matching some of that chrome, but thats just me :D. Whatever you decide to do will look sick!

I love chrome, and it accents the car perfectly.

Oh I'm not a chrome hater at all - it definitely accents cars well if its done right :)

I think the only things I would consider blacking out on your W8 would be the chrome grill slats and the *maybe* the rub strips...

Nah, I'm going to pass on the grille. I don't like the idea of people not know at least what make my car is yet alone what model once I shave the badges. I was thinking about removing the W8 badge from the grille...

And, that was a sweet deal on those wheels, but they are sold now. :( Wheels like that come and go all the time anyway...suspension will definitely come first! :tu:

So, I'm thinking more and more I'm going to keep the Fat 5's. For one, I'm sick of playing on the wheel carosel and losing money; secondly, I've always loved Fat 5's and the OEM+ look; thirdly, it seems more and more people are going with bigger wheels (18", 19") and I want to be different. Here's a p-shop of the 5's on my car:

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h63/sirrangealot/sirrange_fat5.jpg

I will have to get the one wheel repaired, so as long as I'm spending money on that I might as well get them all refinished. I was thinking about getting them mirror polished, of course, opposite of popular opinion around here. ;) Here are pictures of them on another B5.5:

It all depends on the style of the wheels. With Fat 5s, they look good polished, as do these types of wheels....

I asked the guy with the Variant...he said it was about $65/piece to have them redone. But since the Fat 5's are already satin polished, it cut down the cost a bit. I'm not sure much more it would be to polish your stock wheels.

Mirror polished fat 5's would be great on the W8! Do eeeeet!

The mufflers are welded on...2.5" all the way to the back, so I'll need to replace my quad tips. The W8er had everything done for under $500 installed. :tu:

Well, before I do ANYTHING I need a belly pan. This will be my next investment, hopefully in the next couple of weeks. I'm really not liking that I have no belly pan right now, which is why i'm driving my gf's car while the Passat stays in my warm garage. :D :D

It will be a great investment especially since I plan on getting lowered in the spring. :hungry:

nothing past the stock oem covers.

i just try to stay on plowed roads when i drive during the winter... (except when i'm having fun :) ).

unless you plan on getting SLAMMED... like bagged slammed... i dont see the point in getting anything more than the oem covers.

So you really think I'd be safe with an OEM belly pan even with me being 1"-1.5" lower?

BTW, how much should an OEM belly pan be? A guy on PassatWorld is trying to sell me one for $40 + shipping. Aren't they about $65 from the dealer? :sly:

I don't have an aftermarket skid plate and I am fairly low. The only thing you gotta watch out for is backing up in deep snow, that plastic stuff will act like a snow shovel and pack a bunch of snow on top of it, and possibly ripping it off in the process.

What about an old-a$$ garage floor from the '20's made up of dry-rot wood that pops up when you drive over it which just so happens to rip off my existing belly pan?? :sly:

A stronger skid plate is definitely a good idea if your going to get lowered, but its nothing more than a reassurance. As long as your a bit more careful and aware of the fact that your car is lowered, you will be fine! Regular driving on bumpy roads and such is still ok, the main thing you need to worry about are BIG speed bumps and steep entrances to gas stations and such. Even with a big skid plate up front, it wont help because you will high center on the middle of your car. Just be aware of these things and approach them at an angle and you will be alright.

I believe my car is about 2" (if not a little more) lower than stock. Winter is the only time that I really have any trouble, and that is usually solved by staying on plowed roads :).

H&R doesn't make coilovers for my car. The only, and I mean only, options I have are a Koni or Bilstein shocks with H&R lowering springs or PSS9 coilovers.

I always thought the chrome accents on the bottom of the tail lights on W8's was kinda wierd, and I always wanted to get tinted tails. SO, I'm selling mine on PW and buying a set off a regular B5.5 and I'm trying to get the deal done so that I break even. (Sell mine for $150, buy the tinted tails for $150.)

Miro 279's (BBS LM reps)...only if I don't need spacers:

Agreed. I don't think I will go above 18" unless I find an offer I couldn't refuse. :) I think 19" and up will be more susceptible to bending as well, plus I don't want to go through the whole problem of rubbing. I don't feel like rolling my fenders.

If your gonna go with 18's - I like the Phaeton's the best :).

You do sacrafice a bit of ride quality with 19's and coilovers, but you really don't have to worry too much about bending. Most wheels are very durable and as long as your a bit more aware and cautious you'll be fine ;).

So...I think it's time to update my mod list a tad.

To do list:
H&R/Koni setup or FK coilovers - 90% sure I'm going with H&R/Koni setup. Just need to take care of my CV boots first!

Wheels - still up in the air. I'm trying my hardest to stick with my plan of suspension first, wheels later!

Smoked side turn signals - Yes

Smoked fender markers - Yes

Chrome mirror caps - Undecided

Chrome door handles - Undecided

Chrome B6 grille nose piece - No - can't seem to find it now anyway...

Chrome badge-less grille - Yes - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v621/Troopster93/PICT0292.jpg

Replace Bi-xenon headlights or get angel eyes No to the angel eyes - Bimmer guys only. :D

iPod adapter - Yes - changing CD's is lame.

Upper (and lower?) eyelids - No

M3 lip spoiler - No

Shave PASSAT, W8, and 4MOTION off the trunklid - No - to avoid any confusion that I drive a Passat, not a Jetta. :D

Remove W8 badge from grille - Yes, if not going with a badgeless grille.

(2) 4" SilverLine mufflers HELL YES!

Also, I'm thinking about getting a Boser hood (angry). Just an idea right now. I think this is the look I want:

Then I put on my chrome mirror caps...they took a little more elbow grease than I'd thought. I hate taking stuff off like that because I'm afraid I'm going to break something...lol. I did manage to snap off a tab off my old mirror caps, but they won't be going back on anyway. :D

Jeremiah, the drop will eventually be 1.75 in the front and 1.5 in the rear. Once it settles it will probably be closer to 2" all around. The rear shocks are adjustable, so if I get sick of the "rake" look, I could lower it to match the height of the front. But I love the "hot rod" look! :D

The surgery went well for the most part. We started at 6:30 and were done by 11, but we took a couple of breaks in between. The rear setup was a b!tch to take out -- Damir had to mess with the sway bar (among other things) to take out the shocks/springs completely to get them out. Speaking of sway bar, John highly suggested I should upgrade my stock one. That will probably be added to the mod list. :tu:

Damn you beat me outta the 4x4 club :p

looking good. Now on with the new rubbers.

After talking with the Waterloo gruppe last night, I'm going to wait with the new shoes until the suspension settles and I get it aligned. It would be better getting it aligned with the stock wheels since they're not in the greatest of shape (cosmetically). Plus it'd be easier to have the alignment, mounting, and balancing done all at once.

I'm very happy with the progress...I'm in love with my car all over again. I'm turning heads 50x more than I did before, I freakin' love that too! :D

So let's update my to-do list, shall we? In order of priority:

Kinda funny, I think I just realized now (after over 2 and a half years) that I am an "official" VW owner. One of the guys I work with was complimenting me, and his first question then was... "So, what's the next mod?"

I then realized that I've been sucked in. There's no such thing as being satisfied when it comes to owning a VW/Audi. You're always wanting to do MORE. It's like a disease! But SOOOO addicting... :D

I think I'm going with the black grille...I want to make sure the badge will fit on the aftermarket grille. Everyone seems to get the chrome badgeless grille -- I want to be different! I think the black grille with the chrome badge will look dope; the black will diminish some of the chrome but the badge will still retain the flow of the rest of the trim. :hungry:

Update...

--> So Cody has me talked into spacers, I just dunno how big. I need to determine what my offset, measure the wheel well and go from there. I'm thinking 5mm will do the trick. I'd like to poke a little bit. ;) :D

--> The front end of my car needs to be repainted. Plus my lower grille (dark gray) needs to be matched up. The paint on the bumper and hood is all chipped and scratched. That's the thing with black -- damn sexy when it's clean but it's a bitch to keep clean. But for now, a thorough detail from Dan will do nicely, hopefuly before RFD.

--> Still need to locate "correct" center caps...

--> Ordered a set of Blizzaks (Thanks John!) for the winter wheels from TireRack on clearance this weekend. Less than $350 shipped for all four tires! :D

--> Black badgeless grille and smoked turn markers are in the works, again hopefully done before RFD.

I tried putting the W8 badge on the JOM, but honestly it doesn't look as good as I thought it would, plus it doesn't even fit between the new grille's slats. So maybe it was meant to be -- ALL badgeless. :D But it still looks dope, I love the new "murdered-out" look!

However...

...the fender markers DO NOT FIT. I got out of my car this morning when I got to work and the damn things were dangling out the side. The lenses are too small and do not fit correctly, so I'll have to send those back. It's actually not that big of a deal, it's kind of a win/win. The smoked markers went well with the smoked out theme, but the stock clear markers flow with the chrome trim. :)

And yes John, I am going to figure out a way to get the W8 badge on the JOM. My friend Mike has a chrome JOM and he was able to fit his badge with no problems. I'm just afraid of breaking something, lol.

Update...

Ordered some new bulbs...new D2S's. I made the mistake of just replacing one two years ago not realizing these bulbs color-shift as they age. So one is still bright white (the one replaced) and the other is blue. Sooner or later that one is going to go, so better to replace them both at the same time. I found them from the eBay seller store HID-CONCEPT (http://stores.ebay.com/HID-CONCEPT). VERY good deal, I picked up a pair for ~$110...these usually run $150+ per bulb if you get them through a dealership, parts store, etc. Check them out if you're thinking about running HID's. :tu:

Also have a pair of blue LED bulbs coming for my city lights. One city light has been burned out for a good month and has been bugging me, so I figure I better replace those while I'm at it. Picked those up for less than $20 through 42nd Draft Designs (http://www.42draftdesigns.com/). Here's how the city lights (#194) will look when lit:

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k99/vwchop/Picture002.jpg

Crap -- just realized the LED's in the pic above are actually white bulbs and I ordered blue since that's exactly what the look like. Oh well, I guess I'll roll with it. :burnout:

I will also throw on the Atlantas along with the brand spankin' new Blizzaks on probably in a month. Although I'm not looking forward to going back to 16", I really want to try out the winter tires, I heard they're the shizz! :drive:

That's all for now. I'm heading to Rockford tomorrow for a PassatWorld GTG I arranged (mostly Chi-town 'ssaters.) Should be a good time, I can't wait to try out the new tripod!

I've been thinking about ordering a B6-look chrome grille mask but I'm not sure if it'd look right since I have a black badgeless grille and a black car. If I had the OEM grille or JOM chrome badgeless grille I might have been able to pull off the look, but I'm not so sure now. Thoughts?

http://www.tmtuning.com/HOME/catalog/product_detail.php?default_product=1694

Although I do remember a photoshop done on Todd's car -- he blacked out his grille with the chrome mask and it looked dope. But that's on a B6, where it's supposed to be.

Okay, x-nay on the mask-ay. :sly: I was on the fence with it, but I would just rather put a mod on my car if I was 100% "yes" as opposed to... "meh"...

Anywho, got the LED's put in today...but after they were in and spent ~$20 I realized that you aren't supposed to have any blue lights on the front of your car. But I figured if I have the bi-xenon's on, they'll blend in. ;) We'll see if I get sexy-taxed on them...

If I get pestered by Johnny Law, I guess I'll drop another $20 and get white LED's. The white still have a blueish hue to them, but not nearly as obvious as the blue.

Let me know what you think!

So it turns out I'll have to replace BOTH headlight assemblies. Now my driver's side is starting to let in condensation. Rather than dropping over $900 in new HID head lights, I'm going with a different route. I know I'm a hypocrite, I've always said that BMW lights should stay on BMW, but I'd rather drop $300-$400 on a set of FK lights as opposed to nearly a grand.

Found a black W8 on eBay with black projectors, but I don't think they look right. Let me know what you think. When I do get halo projectors, I think I'm going with chrome.

Mine filled with moisture the first night. turned out the rear seals(where you put the bulbs in) were not closed al the way check that first. imo go black the chrome trim looks good but with your grill being black i think it would look better if they were black, and you kept the chrome to a min. for accent purposes.
it will look good with whatever decision you make though. gl.

Just stick with the stock headlights... You'd be downgrading to a lesser quality oem look a like anyways. If you want black why just not joey mod yours and seal them up properly when you put them back together? It would be nearly free and you'd be fixing the problem AND removing that little stowaway in the passenger headlight.

YES - finally, a performance mod I can actually put in the W8!! (limited to k&n, chip, and exhaust. That's about it. You 1.8T guys have it made!)

So, the group buy finally came through. I'm getting the fabricated heat shield for $140 shipped. Now I'll have to line up a K&N air filter by then. I can't WAIT! :D

Time for an update...

So, I'm thinking about doing something with my grille. Either painting my existing one, or going with another one altogether. I REALLY like this one, it keeps with the flow of the rest of the chrome trim without being overpowering. Thoughts?

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r152/gotdropz/0043.jpg

And although it seems like spring is a ways off, it's never too late to start thinking about my next set of wheels. These (http://www.passatworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=277361) beauties have been calling my name, but I'm still kinda leery about the whole staggered + 4mo risk. I'm pretty sure I want some lippage on my next set.

Throw some ideas out there for me, at this point I'm open for anything -- as long as there's lip involved. :D

And I still need to pick up a microswitch...I'm sick of my car locking itself.

I'm also thinking about getting my front bumper repainted, there's a lot of chipped areas. I also need a couple spots touched up here and there, one on a fender, and a spot or two on the hood. I wonder how much that would run me. Anyone have a general idea?

Ok, well anyone who has tried going staggered on a 4Mo of Quattro will tell you 3/100th's or less on difference in overall dia.. Now if your talking 19's, that means even lower profile tyre's than normal, that way you can stretch the front tyre's to get the same dia.. There are only about 4 different tyre manufacturers that will make a 8.5 and 9.5 tyre's in 19's that can be made to the same dia. Toyo, Hankook, Some Jap no name, and I forget the fourth. Things could have changed a little in the year or so since I've done my search. Needless to say pot holes or even driveway curbs are not your friend. Not to scare you away from 19 inch staggered wheels, cause I love mine but, if your meticulous about road rash you must come to terms with the fact that buying wheels yearly might happen. Midwest roads aren't like southern California roads. Axis, TSW, and Raderwerks I think make a very good variety of staggered sets.

If you want the staggered look, Axis makes a "Maxis" lip wheel that will have a smaller lip wheel for the front and a larger lip wheel for the rear, all while having the same overall width. No problem for all wheel drive cars. Not sure how they do it but seems cool.

As far as showing you pics of what I like, I'm not. You will know what you like when you see it. You gotta picture it for yourself. I have had a lot of people show me some ugly wheels when I was shopping. Lips are awesome, but chrome is not, is the only suggestion I will give you. Everyone has different tastes.

Im definitely feelin the grill Jeremy, it looks very at home on the car you posted. The first set of wheels you posted are nice too. I personally dont like those little flare-like-things that poke out from the spokes but Im a big fan of the size/shape/spacing of the spokes on that wheel, perfect IMO. But staggered wheels on a FWD/AWD car has always been FTL in my book...... Sorry Sean/Casey. :hide:

Staggered (different width) wheels don't matter to Haldex at all. Just don't have a difference in diameter of more than 3% front to rear.

01-11-2009, 02:19 PM
So what if I were to get those Vossens...the fronts are 8.5 and the rears are 9.5. So I would just have to get the tire sizes to match within 3%? I know Sean sent me a PM explaining it, I should go back and read that again. Still scares me though. :o
