I got together with Loccusst and Hendo last night at Loccusst's place in Urbandale to work on cars. We got my CD player installed thanks to the amazing skills of my MECP friends :tu:, even after running into a few problems with the wiring. All is good with the stereo though.

Once we had the stereo installed we sat down for some chicken and mashed potatoes while watching a BTCC (http://www.btcc.net) race on Loccusst's HUGE tv. I'd never seen one before, so it was pretty cool to watch. Speed channel needs to revise their schedule so this stuff is on when I'm home. ;)

When the race was over we headed back out to the garage to "remove" my rattling exhaust heatshield. What should have been a simple six bolt removal turned into a yelling, twisting, maiming rage of heat shield destruction. I'm waiting for Loccusst to post the pictures. :D

After we finished destroying my manifold heat shield, we did some VAG-COM tuning on Hendo's car. It's pretty cool how many different things you can change in the way the car operates with that tool. It even had data-logging and real-time graphing capabilities, which was really neat.

But anyways, big thanks to Loccusst and Hendo for helping (read: installing) my CD player. They are both pretty cool guys. :tu:

updated above post with link. BTCC is the British Touring Car Championship. its limited to 2.0L production cars. the racing is short and very intense. check out their website for more info..... http://www.btcc.net :D

What a shitty place in the engine bay to work on, looks like it'd kill my back.

Do I still spy a pinstripe!?

yeah, i was actually sitting on the intake manifold for awhile trying to rip the thing out. we got most of the bolts out, but there were two really rusty ones in a bad spot underneath the heat shield. so we just decided to tear the thing off. it worked.....eventually. i don't know what we would have done without the power of Hendo and his magical MAC gloves...lol :tu:

we didn't get the pinstripe off because Mike couldn't get the heat gun. i actually peeled off part of it with my fingernails, but it was really brittle and crumbly. i may look into the pinstripe wheel that was brought up earlier.

we were all at the garage until about 2:30am, the last hour or so just hanging out with the garage door open and freezing our asses off. Hendo and I also got to take Loccusst's GTI out for a spin. THAT was fun! :D

Hairdryer, extention cord, fingernail.. that pinstripe will come right off.

well, it is pretty brittle, but i was able even to just peel it off with my fingernail without any heat. i'm sure with a little 3M adhesive remover and my fingernails i can get it all cleaned up. its just a matter of motivation, lol.

hockey tape, put it over it and rip it off fast lol we used to do that to stickers on helmets

We thought about the hair dryer...it was pretty cold that night and the sripeing is really brittle.

We may need to have another install day...apparently that spot we thought was leaking coolant, it actually is. The part is about $10 if I order it online. Dealer wanted about $140 for labor/parts. :D

I can't see it being earlier than that unless he has a bad leak and needs to use the garage.

Im in, but THOSE bolts better come off easy, i am not touching the damn thing until the bolts are off! lol j/k. It shouldnt be that bad, its generally right up on top and close to the front. Maybe i'll see if i can dig up a propane heater to get that garage a little warmer.

hehe. they shouldn't be near as bad. the worst part will probably just be taking off the hoses and trying not to spill coolant everywhere...lol
