The story:
Well, it all started when I got bored with my '02 Subaru WRX. It was fast (as long as you were above 3k RPM's) and fun, but driving around town in summer time with the A/C on was just annoying. So I set out to get something different, my requirements were pretty few actually, my next car just had to have AWD and a 6 cylinder motor, oh yeah, and not be insanely expensive.
After doing a ton of looking I stumbled upon the R32. I had never even thought of looking in the direction of VW/Audi, and I honestly don't remember how I stumbled upon this actually. Anyway, I went to the dealer end of Feb 04 when they got some in, test drove one, and instantly thought "This will be my next car", just wasn't ready to buy it that day. I was finally ready in June of 04, I got a phone call from the salesman I was working with saying they got the last two in and were in PDI as we spoke. I went to Jordan just as they pulled them out to the lot (one silver one blue), looked at them for about 2 minutes and told them to put a sold tag on the blue one and have been happy ever since. Actually, I have had it for 3 years as of this month.

Either way it's clean like yours. I like the R32's. I think they are a nice cool car. Just wish they had some more ummmmmph to them and where cheaper to mod.
I love the looks though. They are teh sex on wheels.

Oh, there is also a "fake" R32 running around town, I see it at Granite City quite often. It is actually a blue 20th Anniversary edition GTi with a crappy Wings West body kit that makes it look like an R32 at first glance. I have never seen who drives it though.
I agree, I wish they had a little more oomph and were cheaper to mod too, the EVO definitely has the R32 beat in the fast/easier to make faster categories. :tu:

Besides some of you are local so it's neat to see whats local for other cars. :)
As far as the fake R32 goes, pretty sure it is a real one. I wanted to buy one for awhile and even looked at them before the Evo.
I haven't seen it in a long time, maybe 2 months have gone by since I have last seen it.

Well, next on the list has to be that sway bar, I have everything I need (might pick up some longer bolts for the endlinks), just havn't had the motivation. Also I will be ordering some adjustable control arms as soon as the place I am getting them from has some in stock. After lowering my car the rear camber is out of spec and the stock control arms offer basically no adjustment.
http://images2.rdefined.com/d/62550-1/aca.jpg
All the stuff for looks is on hold until I get performance done, although I do really want to shave the front bumper markers and get my engine and battery covers painted body color.

Control arms are here (arrived the day after they shipped from Chicago  ) but the wife took the good camera with her to Seattle so I can't document the install process. Therefore I will be waiting until she gets back to put them on. They look awesome and are very high quality, especially for $300. ECS sells some that are basically stock control arms cut in half with a threaded bolt welded in the middle for adjustment that are $450

So I got my adjustable control arms and Neuspeed 22 mm rear sway bar installed tonight and the wife took some pics along the way. As far as a review goes, the adjustable control arms look extremely well built for being cheaper then most other options, and they do what they need to do. The only thing that is a little dissapointing is I think I need longer bolts for the end that mounts closest to the wheel (the big U looking end) and didn't know it until I did the install. I put loctite on the existing bolt and will just keep an eye on it (and not drive it much) until I can get a longer bolt.
The 22mm rear sway bar changed the handling much more than I thought it ever would, now I am kicking myself for letting it lay around for the past 2 years. The car used to push a fair amount in the corners when taking them at high speed, most of that understeer is gone now. This combined with the coilovers has GREATLY reduced body roll, there is still maybe a small amount of it, but its vastly improved. The car feels much more nimble on my little test drive I did earlier tonight. Out of all the mods I have done this has been the best bang for the buck.

So last week I get home from work in the A4 and Jess (my car) wanted to have a conversation. Here is how it went:
Jess: Excuse me, but why am I spending so much time in the garage, have I been bad?
Me: Oh no, not at all. You are just getting close to 40,000 miles and I have been forgetting to schedule your maintenance.
Jess: Oh, well I really miss being out on the road, could you schedule that soon?
Me: I will get right on it, I promise!
Jess: By the way, I really enjoyed going to the track the other day, I like it rough sometimes ;)
So to make her happy I talked to Kevin (vwmeister) and got a day figured out that I could come to his shop and get all the fluids changed. The dealer was going to charge me something like $700 for the 40k maintenance and I spent around $275 on parts and even after all is said and done I will get much more done for way less than $700, thanks again for helping me out Kevin!
There was a nice box from ECS waiting for me when I got home today:
http://images2.rdefined.com/d/62594-1/maint.jpg
Enough stuff to change my transmission fluid, rear diff fluid, Haldex fluid and filter (the odd wrench is needed to change the haldex filter), spark plugs, fuel filter, and cabin filter. Not exactly a mod you normally think of, but gotta keep her running in top notch shape so its time
Like you said, the regular maintenance stuff is not something we always think about, but it definitely needs to be done. I'm sure Jess will feel great after you get all that stuff changed out. It ought to be just in time for me to take Jess on a date myself... :drive:

Twooly and I went up to Kevin's shop yesterday to give my R all its new "blood". First of all HUGE thumbs up :tu: to Kevin for letting me use his shop/tools/experience to get all the fluids changed. Sure I could have done it in my garage with the car up on jackstands but the lift at his place made the job a million times easier. Plus his extensive knowledge on working on cars came in handy several times, having all the right tools nearby was nice as well.
It was awesome hanging out and working on the car with you Kevin, I had a blast and you are an awesome guy for helping out. Also thanks to Todd for coming along and pitching in, even though you almost got doused with transmission fluid
The R is running well, can't say the fluid changes made a huge difference, but the peace of mind is well worth the cost and sweat of getting the job done.

So I decided that 4 months is long enough without doing new mods to the car so I ordered more goodies. In keeping with my go > show philosophy I ordered more performance goodies instead of appearance mods. I got the remaining 2 VF motor mounts I didn't have (already have the pendulum mount) and an upgraded haldex (AWD system in the R) controller. I haven't gotten the haldex controller yet, but its on its way.
I was shocked at the size of the motor mounts (cd included for reference):
http://web.mac.com/gjstoll/r32/mods/DSC_0860.jpg
The haldex controller is just a little module that goes under the car near the rear diff (yes I am excited it matches my car, even though you can't usually see it):
http://web.mac.com/gjstoll/r32/mods/haldex.jpg
And since I know there are some tech junkies around here, the tech document showing what the upgraded haldex controller does can be found here (http://web.mac.com/gjstoll/r32/mods/haldex_hpp.pdf) (notice the scales are different between stock software and tuned software, showing the increase in amount of torque transferred to the rear with upgraded controller).
Not sure when I am gonna get this stuff installed since its so freaking cold lately, but the haldex controller was about to go up in price $250 so I figured I should get it ordered now.

Not sure, if I can figure out why my flapper isn't working (maybe just a busted vacuum hose or something) I will probably stay stock. After all, its not like my stock exhaust sounds bad, and yeah aftermarket ones are lighter, but that would be removing weight from the wrong end of the car (its already nose heavy).....

Well in celebration of the nice weather I decided today was the day to install my Haldex upgrade. I don't think I have ever installed something that was only two wiring harnesses and two bolts that was such a pain to do. Mostly because of where its located the choice of tools to get the bolts in/out is quite limited.
Anyway, it's in and definitely worth the effort of the install. The nose of the car doesn't seem to lift as much under heavy acceleration anymore, and going around corners under heavy acceleration (where the upgrade really shines) makes the rear feel like its driving the car through the corner more than the front is dragging it through. The slight sense of torque steer when hammering on the gas at 3k-4k rpms is gone as well. Definitely money well spent, I don't know that I will take advantage of it everyday on the streets (driving like a normal person), but when I want to have fun or am on the track I will be glad I did this upgrade. :drive:

Hows the noise transfer from the heim jointed control arms?
I couldn't tell a difference when I installed them. All I know is I could get my rear camber back in spec after lowering with those adjustable control arms so that made me happy.
I managed to install my VF Engineering motor mounts today, the additional vibration isn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. It feels like all the power is getting put down now, instead of the engine rocking all over the place under full throttle, and shifting when accelerating in a hurry seems improved as well. Overall I am a huge fan of my weekend additions to the car.

Well yesterday with help from Marcus (turboa4), Todd (twooly), and Sam (sam) I installed Hawk HPS brake pads all the way around and flushed my brake fluid with some high temp Amsoil dot 4 brake fluid (Thanks Head at JJperf for the brake fluid hook up!).
It was kinda neat to see the car up on 4 jackstands again
http://web.mac.com/gjstoll/r32/pics/IMG_8593_sized.JPG
My car had the fluid flushed 2 years and 24k miles ago and the stuff that came out this time looked nasty again, lots of crud came out during the flush. Here is a shot of what came out while flushing the clutch, there is some good fluid diluting the nasty stuff, but it still wound up looking like this (good fluid looks basically like cooking oil):

I picked up the bushings from parts4vws.com and the Pioneer from Crutchfield. I know, what am I doing buying from Crutchfield, but for "cheap" cd players its probably the best place to go. They included everything, dash pocket to take up the extra space, wiring harness, amplified antenna adaptor, stock radio removal keys and instructions and shipped it all for free.
I got the P5000 because I wanted something that:
1. Didn't look gaudy and came close to matching dash lights.
2. Had USB input on the rear and built in iPod control (no extra modules to buy).
3. (bonus) RCA plugs on the back instead of leads, meaning less crap to try to fit behind the radio.
I plan on running a USB cable to the glove box so I can plug in a flash drive or iPod and not have it floating around in the main cabin of the car. Hopefully will be installing both this weekend :yippee:

I've always liked Pioneer's stuff. I have a 6800MP sitting in my closet right now from my WRX that I'm thinking of installing in my GTI. It's been a solid unit, I just wish it had time correction and more adjustable crossovers.

My new acquisition for the rally is getting installed wed. Maybe I will swing by this weekend and check things out.

Probably shouldn't do much else anyway, we just bought 2 acres of land to build a house on so extra money (if there is such a thing) is gonna be pretty much non-existant for a while....

Well got a couple small things put on, I put a Pioneer CD player in that has USB input so now I just plug a flash drive in and don't have to deal with CD's in my car anymore, which is pretty cool.
I also got some VW Motorsport strut bushings put in. I ordered them from parts4vws.com and they came with a sweet pack of Starburst, neat. Anyone that has a MKIV knows their front strut bushings are squishy and crappy and fail easily, leading to something that looks like this up front (these are stock mounts that only had about 11,000 miles on them):
http://web.mac.com/gjstoll/r32/mods/JMS_0194.jpg
The motorsport bushings are much harder, without being poly mounts that would be noisy and annoying, resulting in something that looks like this:
http://web.mac.com/gjstoll/r32/mods/JMS_0247.jpg
Turn in response is greatly improved, they transmit just a little more noise to the cabin, but very little really. I'm happy with them, even though it was quite the ordeal to get them on successfully...

Nice! I just replaced mine when I got my coilovers on, and REALLY enjoy no clunking noise over bumps, large or small :D
Mine will be good for a bit but my next set might be like yours! With free starburst too? Nice. How much were they?

09-24-2008, 02:14 PM
They were actually pretty expensive for what they are... They are up to $180 (includes new strut bearings) but last for years from what I have read. They are kind of hard to come by though, not in stock very often... http://www.parts4vws.com/catalog/product_detail.asp?PartNumber=1J0412331CMS

Rated for 375 bhp (320 to all 4 wheels), hopefully I will get to a dyno after getting a custom exhaust done to see exactly where I am at
Oh yeah, stock was basically 250 bhp (195ish to all 4 wheels).

Well, I decided against doing a custom exhaust and picked up an Autospeed 3" resonated catback (4" tips) after getting some feedback from other guys that have this exhaust with turbo R's. I didn't get any pics of it off the car, but it is quite shiny (polished T304 stainless steel construction) and it was almost a shame to put it under the car where nobody will see it :D The only problem was they sent the wrong size clamps for the tips so I am currently rolling with super ghetto U Clamps on there, hopefully to get replaced soon, but they work for now. Most importantly, baby got some growl back, it was way to quiet with the stock exhaust and I picked up about another half pound of boost as well
Thanks to Ryan, Jason and Mike that came by to help/supervise :tu:

They are working on a regular air to air FMIC as an addition to the kit as it currently is, without any additional upgrades. Once that is available you will probably see it fitted to my car

Nope, clutch is actually fine (for now), I thought it was going out but the noise I was hearing was mostly due to a broken bushing on my pendulum mount. I got a new set of bushings from VF Engineering swapped into it already and it drives perfectly now :drive:

Thanks for all the comments guys, on initial startup when the car is cold and the secondary air injection system is running it is kinda loud, but really mean sounding  The best part about this exhaust is there is absolutely NO DRONE when cruising down the interstate. That is the biggest complaint with 3" exhaust systems on the R32. I am extremely happy with it :hoff:

Wouldn't have been me last Wednesday morning, the last time my R32 has been on Keo Way was December 28th :) There is another guy (older guy) that has a blue R32 that is downtown once in a while and he always parks on the street right outside the building I work in. I get probably 10 people asking me why I parked on the street those days....
