So I was told I could get help changing my springs and sway bars in DSM. I will be there 5JUN to 10JUN. I need helping picking a date and someones house/yard/shop. I don't think Heartland Inn wants cars on jacks in their parking lot. Hell maybe I'll be nice and spring for dinner

Do you know what tools you all need to complete the job? I have everything necessary for a MKIV VW suspension install, but probably not for a Volvo install.... Would it be possible to do the install on Sunday since the rally is on that Saturday? I will check with the wife but our garage may be a possibility...

Usually I head back sunday, plus I won't be getting out of work till 6pm or so then I still have to drive back to D-port. Tool wise, I have no idea. I do believe for the springs, just regular spring stuff, nothing funky. I will check though. We will see though. Thanks for the offer.

Spring compressors are definitely not needed for a full coilover swap on a MKIV, although just a spring install usually requires them. I am just worried we may need to separate ball joints or something which I don't have the tools for....

Still looking for a spring guide, but I did find this, http://volvospeed.com/Mods/kw.htm they also have write ups for the front and rear sway bar. I just found out the the bars will supposedly be here on the 5th, the day I leave. Hopefully they are here on time.

I found two excellent write ups
http://members.shaw.ca/heeeeee/strut/ for the front
http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php?showtopic=66838 for the rear.
I figured Thur or Fri would be better. I think the only tool I am concerned with is the spring compressor, the rest I can buy if necessary. It looks fairly decent, but help is always appreciated. Plus I have trouble find my way out of bed in the morning without getting lost, so suspension....Thanks again guys.

How early can we get started on Thu or Fri? I am thinking this will be around a 4-5 hour install (depending on rust). The only thing I don't have that it looks like we need is a pipe wrench, although there might be a different tool that would work, I wish I could see the "cross shaped retaining nut" he is talking about.
I could possibly put in a little extra time this week and leave a little early on Friday if everyone else can get started sometime early afternoon on Friday? I will check with the wife and see what she thinks about opening up Suspensions R Us again (twice in one week  :D ).

After this I told the wife I won't do any more car work for the rest of the month so this will be the last bit of work done at Suspensions R Us for a while, unless I do my sway bar :hide:

Okay, so it was going "okay" so to speak. Then the "easy" rears. First I mushed the threads on the driver side rear, then I broke the bolt on the passenger side. I rule!!!! Luckily Gary and Todd were about the nicest people I have met in a long time and helped me out much. I can't remember Garys wifes name, but she was super nice about losing the garage for a night as well. So now my car sits at Betts Volvo in Urbandale and I sit in Davenport. They won't be able to look at it till Monday. Hopefully I didn't really screw myself. On the plus side the car looks killer. Seriously, no more gap between the tire and fender. Lets hope I can drive it someday.....

Sorry things didn't go so well on the "easy" part of the spring install, hopefully they don't try to screw you too much. If a guy had the right tools I bet you could just drill out that stud and put an actual bolt in there. My wife (Jill) is very understanding, she actually felt bad you were without a car, ours sitting outside was really no big deal.
Hopefully they get things sorted out for you :tu:

I didn't have a camera. I thought I lost my charging cord for the camera until I asked my wife where it was and she reminded me it just takes new batteries. It's been a long weekend. But Gary got pics. I'll take some when I pick up the car.

Hear anything back from the dealer on how they are going to fix it?
850 T-5
06-12-2007, 08:59 PM
Yeah.....they can cut the bolt out so I get a whole new lower control arm or whatever, not cheap. My timing belt was worn, as I figured, not cheap. My upper engine mount was worn, suprised kinda, cheapish. My turbo downtube was leaking, not suprised (nor is Usacjudge, sorry man), cheapish. And I was also right about my ABS module being bad. I not getting that fixed. I can do it cheaper myself (and not break stuff!) I am planning on getting it friday and spending the night so I can be there for the GTG. No point to drive all the way back and forth.

They called today and said it's all done. They also did 2 service recalls on the car. One for the seat heaters and one for the fuel tank. Bonus!!!! The dealer said he will hold it till friday. Don't know the total damage ($) yet.
