As stated the website erased my original review of the auto show. So now you can enjoy the less professional, less detailed version.
As most of you know we take a yearly trip to the Chicago Auto Show. This years show seemed a bit less than the last but still a must see event. The show featured many makes this year but little presence of concepts or supercars. The show seemed to be dominated mostly by gm and Chrysler including 3 large test tracks. I found this rather ironic considering they had to borrow the most amount of money to stay afloat in recent events.
I hope you enjoy my modest selection of photos made out of the over 1500 taken Saturday.
We’ll start off appropriately with something close to home here, Volkswagen.
The new Passat boast a longer wheel base and new styling. It promises to be the best Passat yet with its comfort, ample leg room, and its new 2.0L TDI clean diesel engine projected to produce a range of over 800 miles to the tank!

The new Jetta is as unobtrusive as the old with its subtle and sleek styling, with the exception of the sport. The sport model boasts a more aggressive face and really draws the eye with its oversized diffuser.
http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn185/rubberpenguin16/D3000/Auto%20show%202011/_DSC0853.jpg
The new GTI four door is every bit what you would expect. Its squared front design gives it a more aggressive look when paired with its new bent spoke wheels.

VW also brought a long a few cross-sectional models of its newest engines including the
2.0L TDI clean diesel

Audi was present this year with its expected array of vehicles we all know, however two were particularly eye catching this year.
The new ttRs was stunning with its aggressive and well known “audi face” and its body’s perfect proportions eluding to a proper sports car.

http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn185/rubberpenguin16/D3000/Auto%20show%202011/_DSC1114.jpg
The All new A7 was a flawless addition to the Audi line-up. With all the comforts of an A8 the A7 boasts a comfortable interior, long wheel base, and plenty of leg room including reclining rear seats. This is where the similarities end. The A7 sportback has a much more aggressive stance and styling with its four door sedan like design swooping back to end in a hatch where the normal deck lid would be. The styling is absolutely flawless and points to a much more attractive competitor for Porsche’s Panamera.

BMW showed this year with its expected array of models. One in particular is noteworthy and has been anticipated since the arrival of their newest platform. The M1 arrives this year in the form of the 135M. Its small size combined with its aggressive styling both front and rear, combined with its well placed quad exhaust screams of fun to be had here with a bargain entry price of $28k!

Mercedes showed their arsenal of well known models with the addition of the new CLS-class and a few AMG items.
The SLS is just stunning in person, and while they scream “I’m a huge cockhead” the gull wing doors are just so appropriate on its body styling.

One of my particular favorites is the G-class. It’s large, obtrusive, and awkward but you just don’t care! You can even over look the subtle design flaws such as the exhaust exiting into the front wheel arches.

Smart car was present with the fortwo along with a new addition to their lineup of options. I see this addition as all but useless. The original fortwo was impractical in size, only seating two and having little to no cargo space, however it was an absolute joy to drive. The new electric fortwo is just as impractical and can now only go 63 miles from home before needing a charge and its equivalency is 87 mpg. This may sound great at first but the original fortwo was receiving reports of 60-70mpg at a cost of $12k. The new electric one is four times as expensive starting at $44k! That said the electric only option of the green wheels and frame was a stunning addition.

Fiat was present this year as the new owners of Chrysler motors. Their show space boasted an array of Fiat 500s along with their options. The car is smaller than a mini with a sporty sleek styling that promises to be much more fun. The attention to detail is where its at on these down to the stitching in the seats and even the 500 logo imprinted on the headlight. I know ill be interested in purchasing one of my own. Their centerpiece started with a display of the original late 50’s Fiat 500 which can only be described as adorable.

Porsche was present this year and as always placed right by the entrance and causing havoc in the crowds. These cars draw such a crowd of goobers that you can never get through the crowd drooling and leaning on these cars to get a good shot or truly appreciate them.
Particularly attention getting this year was the new Speedster. Its combination of a shocking blue with its black wheels and gray top was a breathtaking spectacle.

Range rover had an interesting addition to their line-up this year. The new Evoque is impressive and stylish in its own right; however I fail to see why a company that makes the king of SUVs needs to make an XUV.

The first one here ill let you judge for yourself their new sporty hatch personally I liked it at first.

Finally we will visit Hyundai. The usual array of less that desirable models was included here aside from the new Equus and Genesis sedans, both of which were less than inspiring. Their newest addition however is as intriguing as it is confusing. The all new Veloster. It has a stylish, if bubbly hatchback design. Powered by a 1.6l Four cylinder mated to a 6- speed manual gearbox it promises fun. Its biggest attraction in weird however is the Three-door design. Both side profiles of this car look to be a normal two door hatch but looking closely at the passenger side reveals a full size rear door hidden in the body lines. As weird as it may sound it really is a clever design and I for one will be keeping my eye on it.

2008 was a very good show, one of the best years ever IMO.
i think this was prolly the most disappointing show i've been to in the past 13 years. GM and Chrysler took up too much room and the 3 test tracks were a bit ridiculous. i'll still continue to keep on going though :)

I was there as well with Cody Firzlaff (MK4Gasm) and Bill Sand (Bildonia) as well as our S/O's. Had a great time. The new GLI is cool, but the plastic-y center console turned me off. I loved the CC and the Passat though, both were great! Audi had a nice setup as well, the TTRS being cool and finally getting to see the R8 in person. It's so small in person but looks so big in pictures. We didn't make it around to everything, ended up skipping Chrysler, Mitsu, Subaru, Toyota, and Lexus. Got to talk to some of the VW guys that are near the VW area which was cool. One of the guys working the show was also talking about going to Treffen, Eurowerks, SO-WO, and a few other places. It was a decent show, haven't gotten to be there for a few years.

I think if I ever head back to the Chicago Auto Show, I wont take a camera. Really, it's like you go there to lug around equipment, take tight shots of cars with people all around, waiting for them to take their turn just to sit in them, and at the end of the day I figure a year later I can go dealer hopping and see most of the same cars and even test drive them if I felt like it. At the end of the day it's nice that someone is getting a couple decent shots off of some cool cars but 1500 pictures? I love my cameras but that would seriously degrade the whole experience for me.

no the quattro coupe wasn't there. i don't expect to see it till next year as i'm sure they'll keep it on the european auto show circuit for now. audi's display wasn't very big (it usually never is) and it was also pretty packed as well. with the massive amount of space being taken up by the big three, the imports were crammed together, and go figure...thats where most of the crowd really wanted to be.
honestly, there were very few concept cars this year for any brand. i saw one from toyota, one from lexus, and one from hyundai and that was about it. nothing really spectacular was being shown this year.
the domestics are trying really hard, ford was really the only domestic that was worth a damn IMO -- other than that the europeans and Japanese is where the real action is at in the automotive market right now. GM's new offerings i think where rather laughable. the new Sonic has to be one of the worst sub-compact cars i've seen since the aveo...oh wait that too was a GM. and chrysler had "all-new" cars that were nothing more than facelifts with extra chrome added on their already un-impressive and out-dated platforms throughout their range.

Yup, as did myself and hatchback. We went Saturday, too.
The Ford displays were awesome. They've stepped it up, nicely.
The VWs/Audi/BMWs were tits. I did like the Cadillac CTS-V displays. I'd rock the fuck out of one of any of them, sedan/coupe/wagon.

Yes, being a Ford technician and having worked for Chrysler and GM at previous dealerships, I can whole heartedly say Ford has really stepped up. Chrysler still makes the same crap they always have really and GM is the exact same. Ford has really moved ahead, especially with Ecoboost. They say by 2013 they should have Ecoboost for every model out there. Ford's display was awesome this year and I thought they did well. If you haven't gotten a chance to see the 3.5 Ecoboost torture test on their website check it out. It's nice to see the domestics finally getting into the idea of turbocharging their daily drivers.

Lexus’s new supercar is here in the form of the LFA. It boasts promising performance stance but at what price? For one the LFA is unexplainably UGLY. Side profile looks suspiciously like a corvette while the rear is reminiscent of a CTS with some extra mesh glued on and don’t forget the triangular exhaust. Aside from the styling flaws some might still be interested in it until they realize it costs over $300k and hardly outperforms supercars that cost half that price! It fits Lexus well being a soulless numbers machine with zero practicality.
I'm not going to argue with Ugly because that's everybodies own idea. Lets break it down though.
Pricing:
LFA - $375,000
Ferrari 458 Italia - $$255,000
Lamborghini Murciélago LP-670 - $450,000
Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 - $220,000
Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano - $312,000
Nurburgring Lap times (reported by Auto Sport):
LFA ran the same Ferrari 458 Italia
Murciélago LP-670 ran 4 seconds slower
Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 ran 10 seconds slower
Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano ran 9 seconds slower
So of the list, really the Ferrari looks to be your best bet, the LFA is priced right considering only 500 units will be made and this is a car that Lexus threw out to say "We can run with the big boys." Considering they do more than just constantly push out supercars, meaning this probably wasn't their main focus and they're not making money on the car, I think they did well for themselves given the price range. As far as having no soul, you're simply basing that off of some middle aged man that's on TV from thousands of miles away who gets paid to be an entertainer and from what we've seen, can drive a stick but somehow can hardly manage to understand how a clutch works on a motorcycle.
Calling this car soul-less and putting down a $375k supercar for having "zero practicality" is completely asinine; especially considering the fact that the closest you've been to one is 4 feet with no driving experience in it. It's a supercar, built to go fast and look ridiculous while pushing the limits of what the car and the company can do. I think they did very well coming from the IS and GS series and throwing this out of nowhere when their last fastest car was the Supra (aka, congrats to Lexus on their FIRST supercar).
Edit: I will add, I think it's funny that even though this is the only supercar that Lexus ever put out, I bet it's the one that has the least amount of trips to the shop. Lexus is famed for it's reliability, what about the others I just mentioned?

Wanted to come back and say, Alek, don't take that personally because it's not a slam against you. I could give two shits about an auto manufacturer that I'll never work for and a car I'll never own, however I had to stand up and say something because that was bothering me.

Aaron all i can say is... thank you for stiking a meaningful conversation and for correcting me on that.
the original numbers i had wrong were actually projected to be selling at 300k lbs. being just under 2x our currency approximately 500k us. (give or take) which i view to be outrageous. in perspective the price is right on the mark and yes the reliability will probably be better than any italian design.
as far as the soul-less comment... not technically based on clarkson but yes it is a little biased, i base it on the fact that i have never gotten a sense of satisfaction or enjoyment out of any lexus i have ever driven and have hated every single one i have ever had to work on.
i take none of it personally

LFA is spot on for value...not the pretiest in my opinion but a heck of a car and likewise, a heck of a statement from Lexus.
Still a handful of far cheaper cars that I would buy before I would buy any of the cars previously stated... Porsche 911 GT2 and the Nissan GT-R for example based on pure performance numbers...well over half the cost and runs the ring 12-14 seconds faster.
Kudos to Nissan and Porsche!

Depends on the Lexus, you drive an SC300 or SC400 and they've got a little grunt, they're fun to drive and speak to you in a manner saying "I'm fat," which is better than nothing at all. The RX series however really does feel like it was built by robots, designed by robots, and should be driven by the same robots. That being said I would love to drive the LFA myself because coming from the cars I do drive, I'm sure it would feel absolutely fantastic.
Either way we need more pictures of the show :)

I wouldn't jump too fast all over Lexus if I were a VW fan. Even the IS-F puts school buses on your beloved R32 on the ring..and the IS-F is not a performance car. Lexus makes luxury cars that are not performance backed like a BMW or an Audi for example. Not going to rain on anyones parade, but I can rattle off a list of cars by EVERY manufacturer that "sucks balls." And I can start with VW too.
I've had nothing but great success working on anything built by Toyota/Lexus. Keep in mind, several of the Lexus' that "suck balls" bear the 2JZ platform that after about 15 grand or more, and parts overnighted from Japan...will decimate all.
To this day, the fastest car I've ever ridden in was a 1400hp Toyota....ran faster and stronger then a raped ape and is over 18 years old now. Only quality issue with the car was that it didn't come with a factory roll cage... If anything, my hats off to Toyota/Lexus for making damn good cars over the last 35 years.
Cheers!
