it has been loud during winter where it gets louder with the engine speed but with the warmer weather it sometimes doesent make noise but on my way home tonight it started to make it while doing 70 so i pulled it out of gear and revved it hard and it stopped for about 10 minutes and then started again and i revved it and it stopped. My power steering doesent make any noises while turning so im thinking its not that. Any ideas what this could be?? any help will be appriciated

Possible serpentine belt or something related to it? Might be deeper, like into the timing belt area.... Mileage on car/or last major maint. ?

i have been keeping an eye on my temp and it stays normal and i was thinking it may be a tensioner but i dont really know how to check for that

take off your acc belt, spin the tensioner and see if it makes noise, or excessivly free spins.
if it spins freely, or makes noise i'd replace it.

Yeah James needs LSD. I Got to drive it :D
If you have a 12v VR I'd first look at the tensioner pulley as James sayed. They are plastic and suck horribly. You can source aftermarket billet replacements with 20k rpm bearings and such, not sure who carries them tho. Don't put a stock one back on, it's a flawed design.

well drove to work today and it got real loud! clocked into work for a few hrs and then drove it to the shop down the road and by the time i got to the shot it was super loud and smoke started to come out from under the hood. turns out the tensioner pulley seized and the triction from the belt had burned threw the pulley and started to fry the belt off. wouldnt have made it home. sucks i have to pay $380 to get it fixed but shit happens

on the vr does the water pump run off the acc belt? otherwise have them charge it up and limp it home I drove 25mi on half a charge when my alt. went out in my Cavi back in the day just do it during the day (no lights on no radio nothing electrical on) but that was a 1990 car so not much was electric

That sucks the belt got chewed up... why will it be $380 to fix? Get it towed home and replace the stuff yourself... even with the towing bill it will be half the cost.
EDIT: Here's a DIY on how to remove/reinstall the tensioner
http://www.gruvenparts.com/website/diys/VR6%20Serpentine%20Belt%20Tensioner%20Replacement% 20and%20Lubrication.htm
And here's the tensioner pulley you want: "Lightweight Billet Aluminum VR6 Tensioner Pulley"
