View Full Version : Clutch Question, and possible GTG

My ECS stage 2 clutch is starting to slip (just in the last day or so). After talking to ECS it sounds like I could just replace the clutch and pressure plate, without doing the flywheel. I know it's more a matter of taking it apart and seeing what the flywheel actually looks like, but I think I should be ok.

I was curious if anyone has much experience with clutch installs, as I havn't done one before. I have been tackling a lot more projects on my own and was wondering if this is something that would be doable. I was thinking a GTG if anyone is experienced or interested, in helping me install this bad boy. As Gary is doing the coilovers GTG, it's a great idea to get some extra hands and some experience from the guys that have done this stuff before.

To be on the safe side, I plan to order the Stage 2 package (clutch and pressure plate), and a 14lb flywheel to replace the 7lb aluminum flywheel I have now, if I need it. It would be a lot easier to have the flywheel on hand to be on the safe side, rather than having to take it apart twice.

Thanks, and any suggestions or help would be much appreciated!!;) ;)

Ive done a rear drive (rx7) clutch before but never front... the one in the rx7 was easy... infact i think jeff and i did it a total of three times, twice for the clutch and once for the transmission.

jeff... input on a front wheel drive?

From a little reading on Vortex it's nearly identical to a VR6 clutch replacement. Here's a DIY and you should buy a Bentley too.

I don't think it looks too hard to do. I would put a new flywheel in while you are there. I agree with you on the 14lb. too. That's what mine is, Eurospec I believe.

IADUBBER - where did you get you clutch and flywheel from?

I know the ECS kits upgrade to the 228mm from the 225mm that the 1.8t has stock, and the VRs oem part is a 228mm right?

yes, VR6 is 228mm.

The flywheel came from http://www.eurospecsport.com

The clutch from ECS OE Sach's Clutch Kit With Hardware ES#901

2 TRANS AMS 4 TIMES
A 81 HONDA CIVIC
AN 84 S-10
AND I THINK A COUPLE OTHER THINGS

I ALWAYS NEED TO READ OR ASK ABOUT THE HYD. CLUTCH STUFF
BUT I THINK YOU COULD DO IT . JUST GIVE YOUR SELF A FRI,SAT AND SUN TO DO IT AND TAKE YOUR TIME THAT WAY WHEN YOU GET IT DONE IN HALF THE TIME YOUR GOOD....THE HONDA WAS THE ONLY FRONT DRIVE I DID AND IT WAS BACK IN 93 BUT ALL CLUTCHES WORK BASICALLY THE SAME ,IT IT IS THE WAY EVERY THING AROUND THEM IS PUT TOGETHER THAT IS DIFF.

Im still up in the air on this one, I don't have a garage here in Iowa City (college student with an apartment), and my parents house is on the market in West Des Moines. Plus the tools are in storage up in Minnesota waiting for the house to be finished.

yeah I hear ya. I only have a one car or I'd put mine up for use. Just not enough room to do a clutch. I would be glad to help though, as long as you have a bentley too :)

I changed the clutch in my 2.4L Cavalier.

Also, DM Magazine has an article on changing the clutch in a Mk4 for this month's issue. ;) It is mailing out as we speak. :tu:
