AAP stores that check the light for you cannot clear it for a reason. They can't be held liable for clearing it and something happening to the car or driver... common sense.
The light could be coming on due to a bad cap. Since you already bought one, replace it and see what happens. If not, it sounds like a leak somewhere else in the emissions system.

The typical screw light. I've got this on my Passat a couple times and it clears itself after a bit. Did you happen to just get some fuel?

I've always been able to have Advance clear codes on the Gf's escort. Unfortunately, they can't read the passat.

Well so far so good 150 miles no light yet had a little bit of a rough idle so I gave her a tank of shell v power with a bottle of chevron techron so if it's gunk that will clean it right up and a odd moment of the gas station tho I filled up then my car wouldn't start then to realize the front edge of my hood was lined up with the gas station awning so it was pouring thinking a ass of water got in the engine compartment one more crank it fired up fail!
