Okay, here's the story. I bought a 96 GTI VR6 last month and haven't even driven it 50 miles and I've stuck 700 bucks in it. First was the coilpack and wires, rear brakes wheel bearings, then the water pump went last week. It overheated but I pulled over and let it cool down. I filled the coolant after awhile and drove it about a mile to my buddy's house where it sits now. I put the waterpump in along with a new thermostat and the three housings.
I got it running and took it for a ride. When I came back it was smoking like crazy under the hood. I looked at the exhaust heatshield and it was covered in oil. I wiped it clean and took another spin. Once again covered in oil. Came back and checked the oil and it wasn't even hitting the stick. And it had ALOT of air pressure when I pulled out the dipstick. My question is did I warp the head when it overheated or could the headgasket be shot? I did do alot of searching and really couldn't find alot about oil on the back of the motor. And it didn't look like it was a drip, it looked like it was shooting out of it. I couldn't look much more as it is getting dark here. Any help is greatly appreciated.
It sucks because it's gonna rain for the next 2 days and it's stuck outside. I'd like to just fill up the oil and drive the 3 miles home, but I don't want to risk further damage.

Sure sounds like a possible head/gasket failure. Overheating an engine with an aluminum head even a little is never a good thing.
Add some oil and idle engine and look around to see if you can find an obvious leak rev up if needed to increase oil pressure.
Is the coolant system getting pressurized from cylinder pressures? From what you describe, I think something should show up.
Good luck

I thought that it might be it. Honestly the coolant looked fine, but I guess the story will be told when I fill the oil back up again and see if there is any water in it. I just wanted some preliminary thoughts. Frick! I just wish it was at my garage, not stuck in my buddy's yard. I might just have to tow strap it home.
Oh, and as far as idling, I had it idling for about 20 minutes lastnight before I took it for the first drive after the waterpump install and there was no oil. Just seems to happen when revving or driving.
Thanks

I just can't ****ing win with this car. There goes the money to get it painted!
Kevin, if a catch can system for the PCV is clogged could it cause this? Having excess pressure? But I mean it's a ton of oil back there. Ill have to stare at the bentley tonight and try to get a peak back there when it's not raining out.

yeah, do you have a truck and a towstrap? LOL I might call my roadside assistance from Verizon and see if the free 10 miles of towing can be to my house and use a flat bed.

Get a mirror and flashlight to look around the places you can't see otherwise. Like hoses, oil pressure switches, where the head and block join, valve cover gasket, oil fill cap, etc.

Yeah, good idea. I plan on doing that.

Sorry man, I had to. ;) Best of luck getting this sorted out though. It sucks you've been having so many problems with the car.

No, don't have either one, lol. I can steer like it's nobodies business though. :D
Just trying to help a fellow dubber out. I could drink beer and swear at it pretty good too if you need help with that.

Haha, i'll be sitting at 12-1300 since I bought it a month ago if I have to shave the head.

yup the ol chain housing cover, wich has no gasket just
sealer, the factory uses a anerobic type sealer on those
and after awhile they leak I use permatex ultra gray
silicone or vw white silicone on them , also you will need
to replace the rear main seal, but with that milage id take
a good look at the guides and chains , its probably about
due for them and also the idler gear wears pretty bad.

tell the customer to pony up, tear down and inspect time needed, a dye test will clear your confusion.

remove the plate in front of the flywheel, and examine the rear with a
borescope or a good pencil light. look really good around the rear main
seal. at that milage it could be going bad. also there is a timing chain
cover on the rear of that engine, that does not use a gasket , and are not
know for leaking, but is possible. it would leak out behind the flywheel.
good luck... e.w.rogers

HAVE YOU USED DYE TO PIN POINT THE AREA. THEY USE A FREEZE PLUG FOR SOME OIL
PASSAGES.

(SORRY ONLY SENT HALF THE REPLY)
ALSO THE HEADS,GALLEY COVERS, VALVE COVERS, CAM SEALS AND CAM PLUGS LEAK ON
THESE. UV DYE IS THE BEST BET ALSO IN ONE TO TWO YEARS EVERY SEAL GETS CHANGED
ON THESE ENGINES. (THESE ARE
LIKE OLD AIR COOLED BEETLE ENGINES THEY ALWAYS MARK THIER SPOT)
PERRI BILL AT 50% MORE PER YOUR HOURLY RATE AND ADD 15% FOR CLEAN UP AND
BROKEN PLASTIC TO ESTIMATE. THERE IS A GOOD REASON WHY AUDI BILLS AT 100 PER HOUR.

Oh yeah! Some of these older VR6 engines had a problem with
the chain cover leaking! You'll need to pull the trans to
fix it. With this mileage, plan on replacing chain guides
while you're in there and possibly chains. This cover
doesn't employ a gasket, just special sealer.

Sounds like it could be the rear main seal.

We have this passat that has an oil leak problem, we've
replaced the oil pan gskt and oil filter adapter seals. It
appears to be coming from the rear of the engine. There is a
plate that bolts to the block and looks like it is coming from
the gskt behind the plate. I guess my Question is- is this a
common place for them to leak or is there something else in
there that is more common to be leaking. Thanks for any
responces and have a happy christmas & new year.
thanks agian for any help

I just talked to Roadside assistance and they will tow it to my house. I just have to call back when I am there and ready. Phew...I should have done that in the first place.

So, my ventures tonight. I got off of work and called roadside assistance to tow my GTI home. So they get there and say that Roadside doesn't cover modified vehicles.
Phase 2:
I get to thinking about crankcase pressure and realized that I did a catch can mod. I checked the mod over and just vented the pcv to the ground and plugged the intake. Boom, not more shooting oil on the engine. So that was a good thing, doesn't look like a head problem. Now it's surging like crazy. I can never catch a good break.

surge may be caused by the oil getting in where it does not belong...try cleaning your IACV with a little carb and choke cleaner to get the gunk out of it...then check for leaks in the intake tract after the MAF
