today i made a bit of an unexpected purchase...
my buddy aaron (kook) told me about this 1984 BMW 6 series that was forsale for $150 -- thats a find, and i've always wanted a 6 series for quite some time. so we decided to split the price and buy it togther as a side project
the car is a hell of a find -- straight body (abiet for the front nose and a dent in the rear) and there is no rust on the body. the car came with full service records, all the interior electronics work (spare for a few bulbs and a switch), carpets are clean, and it only has 149k on the clock. we did some work on it today to get it running, cleaned the spark plugs, throttle body and it fired right up with a jump start!
none the less it will need some work to get it to drive properly, but for the price, its a damn good find, i'm really looking forward to it :D

most of them are automatics, but hell, there are not a whole lot of these cars around iowa so i'm not going to complain. besides, its just a nice touring car, so thats alright. its a really comfortable car to drive, once its running properly i think its going to be sweet.
it'll take some time though, its obvious this car was never driven hard, it has quite a bit of carbon build up, and it was just sitting for the past year. but i was able to drive it around tonight a bit, and once all of its fluids are changed, it will make a world of a difference. -- so aaron will mostly be focusing on that while i take care of the body, and interior.

yeah it looks kinda naked and dull without it, it was apart of the facelift that they did starting in 1986. but the good news is the body is all the same for all E24 models so it will be easy to install. it has a lot of potential :tu:

That's pretty cool, especially that you could get it for $150! If it becomes too much of a headache, I would consider parting it out. You could easily get $1000 if you decide to part it.

so since the drivers seat leather is shot, i'm going to have all of the seats recovered in new leather. given the opportunity, i am thinking i would like to make it slightly different and make it two-tone. so i was thinking of leaving the leather is orignal factory color, with blue suede (matching the exterior color) inserts on the ribbed portions of the seats -- like in this ferrari 550
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/550maranelloblueint.jpg

nope, haven't touched the dash or the seats yet. the dash needs to be degreased, cleaned, then conditioned. the seats, espacilly the rear, will need to be cleaned, and then treated (prolly twice) in order to get the dirt and grime lifted from them, although i dont think i'm gonna worry too much bout the drivers seat since there isn't much left on the bottom :D
i'll be workin on that tomorrow night!
stay tuned for more progress -- should be havin a bunch of new parts comming in shortly :D

I was over at White Dog Auto today here in Iowa City, and I couldn't help but notice a 6 series identical to yours, same color and all. I will be over there tomorrow and will snap a picture for you. It looked restored as well, with some OE BMW wheels that reminded me a lot of the Oetty RE's but with a big dish.

thats awsome, E24s are rare in the US, its a big coupe so its not a big seller to begin with, and BMW only imported limited numbers -- they only offered the 633 here in the US, and the 635 was europe-only untill 1985 -- it was pretty expensive too, even for a BMW, i found out the original MSRP in '84 was $40,800
i'm thrilled to have it, esp since its something thats hard to find, i like being different :D

update!
the parts are finally starting to arrive so i thought i would post some progress photos...
here is what i've gotten so far:
brembo brake rotors & ceramic pads
oem Hella elipsoid headlights
battery-less SI board
new steering wheel
new plugs & wires
various new replacement switches
service reset tool
various hoses & lines
strong arms for the hood
various new seals & gaskets
fuel filter
power steering pump & filter
air filter
e-brake cables
new rear caliper
rear tail light (left side was broken out)
...and a **** ton of light bulbs
this isn't everything thats pictured, but just a few of the items i have in my living room waiting to be installed...

new steering wheel installed
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/DSC01753sm.jpg
updating old technology, the SI board -- this board is inside the guage cluster (it was a pain to take that apart!!) and it controls the oil life indicator, inspection light, service light, and 'CHECK' warning indicator. the old board had batteries..originals from '84, and since they were dead, it will not let you reset the display. the new one is much more advanced, and doesnt rely on batteries to store memory. it was expensive, but better than taking out the cluster later on down the road.
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/DSC01749sm.jpg
the guage cluster after i completly took it apart, cleaned it and spray painted it black since the inside had turned a moth brown from mold and age. looks much much better than before!!
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/DSC01752sm.jpg
and the new tail light -- the dent is still there, and it does go clear thru to the trunk, but my uncle is going to be fixing the body and repainting it in a few months, so it'll hafta do for now.

just took the shark on my first long drive since i've bought it. finally got the brakes done so i can drive it safely, and ran it for a good 60-90 mins, both highway and city driving. i'm just completely shocked how well this car drives. it revs healthy, and at speed on the highway it doesn't shake, squeel or rattle anywhere what so ever, and it drives in a straight line!!
half way though right after a short run on the highway up to 65 mph or so for about 10 minutes, i pulled over just to do a quick check on the engine. no leaks, steam or smoke at all - good to go! drove it in town for a while doing plenty of stop-n-go and got into the throttle a bit to clean out some of those carbon deposits. after i got back, the engine did smell a little warm, and some light smoke did come from the engine, but only for about 15 seconds or so, so i let it cool off for a few moments before continuing on my trip - i think its in need of a good coolant flush, and it still smells like its burning off some old fuel and carbon. after about 10 mins i took it out again across town, with no problems at all.
i'm just thrilled -- i've only spent about $500 so far, and the car runs and drives very well. it could use some new wheel bearings up front, and some new shocks soon, but overall, i'm fully confident that its reliable for short haul trips!
also got another package of parts today --- 6 illuminated window switches. plug-n-play and they worked! -- its turning out to be a perfect day :D
only one minor set back --- brake lights are out, they were workin yesterday...meh

today i spent all morning the first part of the afternoon cleaning my engine bay that has been neglected for many many years. spilled oil, dirt, grime, and fluids that have leaked out of hoses at one time have built up. the problem was so bad that when the car was running it smelled like burning oil since it was all over the head, valve cover...well pretty much everything.
so i got a bunch of simple green, a sponge, a few small wire brushes and one larger brush. removed the intake and a few other things, then taped up all the sensors, and covered the wiring bay on the left side with plastic bags so they wouldn't get too wet and have the possiblity of shorting anything out that may be exposed.
it took a very long time and i was covered in grease and cut up my hands quite a few times, but the results were worth it! after i had removed all the grease that i could reach by hand, i took the car down to the car wash, completely covered the entire engine with simple green again and lightly power washed the entire engine bay and underside of the hood.
now the car doesn't smoke after a long drive or smell like burning oil :D

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/DSC01790sm.jpg
after all that hard work, i spent the rest of the afternoon driving. checked the tire pressure, and also took a good look at the control arms and other suspension componets to make sure they were safe for highway speeds, and then took it out of town for the first time. it had no problem keeping up with traffic on the interstate at 80 mph, and at one point i pushed it up to 95 briefly once there was a break in traffic. drove it for a good 3 hours with no problems at all!! :D

oooh we'll be definetly getting into the motor. already put some seafoam into it. we will need to take off the valve cover because one of the valves needs to be adjusted and it will need new valve seals more than likely...it also needs a new power steering pump pretty bad. those two items aside, it runs rather well.
one thing at a time :D
currently we're focusing on the wiring to get all the lights and accessories working properly -- we took out prolly a good 5-10 pounds worth of wires from accessory equipment that was removed, plus wire that was damaged or cut --- and since most of the interior is torn out, i will be ordering a new dash assmebly since the current one is cracked.
We're also talking about swapping in a 350, that or an LS1.

so my BMW will be going into the shop for paint, body and interior work in the next two months or so. i have been looking at various colors that i'd like to paint the car -- i've decided that it needs to stay blue, since i really don't feel like doing a complete strip of the engine bay and interior to make it look right.
so here are a coupe of colors that i think would complement the car well, and they are offered on the current 6 series
option #1: Monaco Blue
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/645monaco3.jpg
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/645monaco2.jpg

so i have made a little bit of progress on the BMW lately. i'm getting it ready to go into our shop this winter and have the body and interior work done. but there are a few things yet mechanically that i would like to have fixed first, and a few parts that i need to get yet.
about a week ago, i finally found and installed new ellipsoid projector headlamps

light output is much better than the older sealed beam units, and best of all, the light pattern/output will work perfect for an HID conversion in the future. :tu:
this week i'm espacilly excited because i finally found the one part that i've been looking high and low for since i first got the car --- the european bumpers & M6 front spoiler. for those of you that have seen this car in person, it is hideous with its massive front and rear bumpers. this week i was lucky enough to not only find the european bumper assemblys, but also the front spoiler from an M6 :D this will completly change the look of the car, and i can't wait to install it!!!!

http://a69.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/68/l_d9a84bc76b08f9f93c2a0a6f2faca2a4.jpg
i've also choosen and located the new wheels that will be going on the car, but i'm going to hold off on these untill this spring since the car will be in the shop most of the winter anyway and i am on a tight budget -- but they will be required since my TRX tires have just about had it :td:
http://a851.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/106/l_d0fa89b59d49a4cbc607e03e8d436612.jpg
over the next two months the engine needs a little work...valve seals, head needs to be cleaned up, and possibly a lifter -- wont know for sure untill its looked at a bit more closely, but my biggest goal is to make sure the engine and drivetrain is perfect. tranny shifts smooth so thats a plus, but a rear end rebuild wouldn't be a bad idea either, mostly just for a peace of mind.
each day it keeps getting closer and i try to add at least something every week just to keep steady progress. best part is that its a project car thats driveable and not just taking up space in the driveway. i just can't wait till spring when its finished!! :drive:

Now if avus doesnt hit ya just right you could also go with Nogaro Silver (Light E30 M3 Color), Granite Silver (Dark Grey E36 Color), Estriol Blue (Beautiful E36 M3 Color) or if you wanted to get pretty crazy you could go with Laguna Seca Blue (Teal-ish E46 M3 Color which I shall refer to as LSB from now on). If you were to go with LSB I think you would be the first 6er with it. LSB looks good on the E46 M3 and oddly enough looks even better the older the car is. It looks great on E36s and pretty good on E30s too. Im sure it would be a hit on yours although I wouldnt rely on a PS color change if you were to try to get a sneak peek that way. LSB always looks horrible after a PS respray. Both Nogaro and Granite Silver look subtle yet very nice on any car, Nogaro Silver would be period correct and is probably the safest out of the selection. And both the amazing Avus and Estriol blues are perfect. Avus is very close to Interlagos blue except I think there is enough of a difference for Avus to look much deeper and the color really pops. So Avus blue would be my first choice but if you want a list it would go-
1. Avus Blue
2. Nogaro Silver
3. Granite Silver
4. LSB
5. Estriol Blue
6. Interlagos Blue
The others you posted dont look good IMO so I didnt list em.

hmmm....do you have a picture of avus blue?? :D
my problem with changing the color of the car is that in order for it to look right, i'd have to do a completely strip the interior, and engine bay -- thats a lot of work and i want the car done by spring. however, the last picture i posed of the 635 is actually my original Arctic Blue -- i have to say seeing the color fresh and unfaded, i kinda like it. i have a few weeks yet to decide, so we'll see :tu:

some new parts for the 6 since i haven't bought anything for it in a while ---
new rear speaker pods and euro rear headrests

the headrests are also height and tilt adjustable! makes for quite a cozy place to sit even if the leg room isn't all that generous. once its color matched and the seats are covered in fresh leather, the end result will look like this...
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/635rearseat.jpg
this car will be going in for paint hopefully soon while i wait to fix a few other loose ends on this car -- power steering and fuel system need to be sorted out first. once the car goes into the shop, it should be fully complete (exterior wise) in about 3 weeks. :D

Awesome although you should match the rest of the leather to the color of the headrests, that color is SICK! So what color are you going to paint it? Any of my suggestions from above?
1FastB5

the color will be arctic blue -- its original color. after some research the original color is actually close to the above pictured monaco blue. what gives the car its current dull, gray state is not only from fading, but the fact that it was re-sprayed by maaco :sly:
the car will be identical to this one pictured below, spare for the BBS wheels since i'm going with m-pars -- interior will be changed a bit too. gonna ditch the worn comfort seats for the sport seats w/power bolsters & headrests

so today, i took the plunge and finally bought wheels and tires. partially out of want, but also out of need since the current TRX tires are badly weather checked and borderline dangerous for highway travel. since the metric TRX tires will run $1,500 because they are made-to-order, i am going to fit a set of modern 18 inch M Parallel wheels.
total cost: $1,024 for the wheels and BFGoodrich g-force tires mounted and balanced -- expensive, but not bad all considering its a complete package. the wheels are also machined, not painted. results should make a big difference in the appearance of the car.
this will only be the beginning of what will be a very expensive year to this car as its body restoration begins in april.

cool, what year? if i had the space/money i'd have a 2 of these in a heartbeat -- i'd love to have a euro M635. this E24 has really gotten under my skin, its fun to drive, its a classic, but it still has all the modern features of today's cars that you want (spare for cup holders).

i've seen a few E24s with hitches on them, usually from Australia or Europe...wouldn't exactly be my first choice on a tow car, even if the trailer was light.
the Z3 is for the Empress (aka, mom :D)
she wants a convertible with decent MPG, and i struggle to think of anything better thats fun to drive, affordable and economical.

yet some more updates for the E24....
sunday night KooK and I replaced the entire power steering system and brake accumulator -- all the lines, fittings and the pump itself (for the THRID time).
those of you that have seen the car in person may remember its trademark power steering growl that was loud as hell. now the car sounds so much better, and all you can hear is the engine - the way it should be! this was finally made possible by getting a pump directly from the original manufacturer in germany :tu: the car drives so much better, its far more responsive on steering and with the new brake accumulator, it now delivers eye-popping stopping performance with its new brembo brakes (along with delivering one hell of a flat spot on all 4 tires :D)
so now the car is almost mechanically complete. with some wheel bearings, shocks/springs and an some minor top end work (valve job) it should just about be tip-top :)
however today i experienced a minor set back. i drove the car to work and back today -- performed nicely all day on the interstate and then tonight when i get back into ames i stopped for a bite to eat. leaving the restraunt i started smelling fuel when i started the car....then once i pulled out of the lot that smell got very strong.
i stopped the car and opened the hood to find a fountain of fuel gushing out of one of the main fuel lines. the amount of fuel being lost was rather impressive really, it sounded like someone was dumping a bucket of water on the ground. since i was only a mile from home i wasn't going to have the car towed, so i limped it home, fire extinguisher in hand leaving an ever growing trail of fuel behind the car. in just over one mile, it lost about a quarter tank of fuel :D
oh well these types of adventures are only expected with a car this old, and at least i wasn't stranded. the fuel lines were due to be replaced anyway, this will just speed up that process a bit more!
Somebody elses turn to fix the damn thing.

04-06-2008, 04:46 PM
so last night i picked up my sport seats from MLPS for the 6
i'm happy i was able to find a pair not only the same color as my interior, but also in working order and cheap at $175. the leather on them isn't as in good of shape as my original comfort seats, but since the car is getting reupholstered anyway, its not going to mater so long as the structure of the seat is good.
so today i took out the original seats and while they were out, gave the carpet a good deep cleaning with shampoo and stain remover, all came out spare for a stain under both driver and passenger seats, but overall not bad given the age of the car.
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/DSC02431.jpg
then after that, it was time to install the new seats
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/DSC02433.jpg
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/DSC02434.jpg
passenger seat went in without a hitch. the driver's side was another story. the drivers seat was equipped with a memory computer, which my car did not come with in '84. this is a problem because the main power harness is totally different. so i took out the memory computer and am currently swaping the control units from the original seats onto the new ones, which works fine, spare for the connections for the damn motors...which BMW reversed. so now i'm going to try to swap out the motors since they are identical and see if i can get it to work. if not, some re-wiring may be in order

new updated pictures with the new M parallel wheels fitted!
had a bit of a set back because the tires that were originally fited were a 235/50 which was WAY too big...the tires wouldn't even fit under the wheel wells. so i had those removed and fitted 235/40s which fit perfectly. the car will need a drop (comming soon anyway) but i think they fit the car well.
i really like how this style wheel is aggressive but at the same time simple enough to still match the lines of the car very well. i think the look will be stellar once its painted with its euro bumpers. its getting closer and closer every week :D

time for an update on the shark!
the suspension rebuild is now complete, spare for the front wheel bearings that we need to install yet. but at least for now the car is back on its wheels for a little while. the rear wheel bearings were a nightmare to install and it involved a bit of cutting to get the old ones off.
the subframe mounts weren't any better. that required a lot of fire and eventually, a very large man to hammer them out. before the new parts were installed on the rear cross member i took care of all the surface rust and then finished it off with a fresh coat of rubberized undercoating -- the rear diff also got the same treatment.
now only a few things remain to be done for the shark -- it needs a new exhaust and valve seals. while the head is out, the tranny will be rebuilt for safe measure -- other than that, the car is pretty much mechanically done!
this winter it is finally going in for its body work -- including new paint, fixing a few minor areas of surface rust, and installation of its much needed euro bumpers & spoilers.
here are a few pix over the last few weeks.

so finally, my 6 is back on the road. i spent the thursday thru saturday non stop with alek in his garage working around the clock to get it done. this week it finally goes home to get its body work and paint done, so we had a bit of a schedule to meet!
it was time to put everything back together -- since the drive shaft, axles and everything else was out of the car. during that process we also ran new brake lines and e-brake cables. the brake lines we had to custom make ourselves, and it took 4 trips to the parts store across town to finally get the correct fittings thanks to a less-than-knowledgeable parts man at the counter -- thanks to him we wasted much of Thursday and after 10 hours of the kerosene heater glowing in the garage, we're smoked out by 2am.
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/DSC03003.jpg
friday - and at this point, we're almost finished. we finished up the brake lines and fittings, and i wanted to drop and drain the gas tank. it was full of sediment and old fuel that was so varnished that it wouldn't mix with fresh fuel...causing the car to stall once you got down to half a tank. so i place the jack under the tank to support it and by just making contact with the tank...it starts to leak fuel all over the place. in disbelief i pushed on the bottom with my finger and went right through it
we find a 528e at trail's end that is on the same platform as my car and has an identical tank. we rush out there arriving 35 minutes before they close. its only 3 bolts holding up the tank, we can do it! we find the car in the weeds, get it jacked up, all the bolts of and...it won't budge. damn tank is glued to the body, and its 5 pm. we're done for the day
the guys at trail's end pulled the tank off the car by 9:30 saturday morning and we're back on track...
on our 3rd non-stop day of working on the 6, running back and forth to the parts store, and freezing in our uninsulated garage laying on the floor under the car with only a small kerosene heater to keep us warm, its almost time to put it on the ground, we just need to put the exhaust back on!

there was a brief scare moments before i took this photo when the car died and i lost all electrics. turned out only to be just a loose battery cable. :D
we spent the rest of the evening for about 4 hours driving the car as an endurance test of all our hard work on the fuel system, brake lines, wheel bearings, and allowing the suspension to settle. after some spirited runs on twisty back country roads and the interstate, it all went off without a hitch and everything is working perfectly!

Who is doing the final polish/finish work on your car? If it's still gonna be in central Iowa I think I may know someone that is fairly qualified to take good care of it for you. If not, is it back at your parents place? If you need help, I'm pretty sure you have my cell number.

yes -- the car will be back at my family's place back in eastern iowa in monticello -- so yeah when its done i'll definitely give you a call. i don't expect the body to be done untill spring though, we are going to take our time with it and do it right.

time for an update!
although not a whole lot has changed -- just more delays than anything else, but hey thats expected with a project car. those of you at the CR GTG had a chance to see my 6 in person and since then i've given the 6 some lovin. of course, everyone remembers its dull looking paint. well since the paint is running a little behind schedule, i was bored and took to it with my $20 buffer and a bottle of rubbing compound (two passes) and some wax. needless to say, i was impressed. of course the paint isn't great, but its a vast improvement of what it was -- at least now i can tolerate to look at it now for the next few months during the summer.
also, as you will see from the pictures the suspension has now fully settled from the last pictures that i've posted. its still slowly breaking in with the miles and the bumps but every day it gets better and better and i'm very impressed with its handling and response. over the past week i've been driving it daily and i've had a chance to reflect on all of the work its had over the past two years and how far its come. the new hydrolic system and pump is working flawlessly -- the new ellipsoid headlamps scorch the road ahead at night -- the brembo brakes & new lines put your eye balls on the windshield -- the fuel system finally delivers fuel to those 6 thirsty cylinders (after replacing everything from the tank to injectors!!) -- the new wheel bearings and suspension roll down the road quietly with ease -- and the M Parallel wheels make me stare at it all day at work. i love this car! :D
anyway, on to the pix -- poor quality i know since i took them tonight downstairs.

new updates on the 6 this week -- one that i've been waiting for since i originally got this car.
exhaust, is finally INSTALLED!! this was the biggest nightmare to source and get something that was priced right -- usually JUST the muffler section from cat-back runs anywhere from $1000-1400. after a lot of looking and waiting, i picked up the unit for $360. from the headers back its all new, with a magnaflow midsection and high flow cat -- the whole system is OE spec, which is dual from the cat.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/DSC03932.jpg
other updates that i have done this week are on the interior -- which had a few areas that had been neglected and need to be put back together. center console was re-wired in many areas and re-tucked, dome light was installed (original one had melted out), and the most welcome addition, a new radio!
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/DSC03930.jpg
a simple sony head unit for $75 with ipod connection and CD player, plus 4 new boston speakers. nothing fancy or extravagant, but when you haven't had a radio in two years, its a big deal. combined with the new exhaust, it feels like a totally different car. i found out that my power antenne is like 4 foot tall and towers over the car -- all the more impressive is that i can pick up radio stations from omaha and cedar rapids from here in des moines, and the sound & clarity is outstanding.

the list for items remaining to do to this car is getting quite short, but still still take some time and $$. the following is what else needs to be done over the next year or so, most of which is cosmetic:
replace or rebuild the head (planned for this winter)
replace control arm bushings up front
install new dash pad
reupholster the seats, possibly headliner as well
body work: new paint, and install european bumpers, spoilers (front airdam w/fog lights and decklid) and front nose section (already purchased, awaiting install)

the red BMW is an E21 320iS which used to be my car that now belongs to my buddy alek. the 7 thats parked closest to the camera is an E23...thats essentially my 4-door twin. that car is a genuine grey market euro, its a 745i turbo which is very rare here in the states. it has the same engine as my 6 with higher compression, fewer emissions BS to work with and a good size turbo and intercooler.
and yes, the gas guage does work now properly, i forgot to update that. actually, the day after i ran out of gas in it when you had to rescue me, i ordered a new fuel sending unit. now i can take it all the way into reserve and even the low fuel light works as it should!

another upgrade for the 6!!
thanks to alek, i scored some genuine barely used Hella HID ballasts. so i immediately installed them and purchased some new 4300K HID bulbs (also Hella) and alek cleaned up the wiring for a seamless OEM installation. if you don't know what your looking for in the engine bay you'd never know they are there. complete with resistor boxes as well so the 'low beam out' indicator at mission control stays happy.
this is the only reason why i upgraded my headlights to the newer, projector "ellipsoid" units was for an eventual HID upgrade. the results are impressive, they're just about on par with my OEM e-code HIDs in the passat...and that says a lot.
before with silverstars:
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/DSC03346.jpg
after with Hella 4300k HIDs:

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/DSC04594.jpg
super-sharp beam cut-off and spot-on alignment -- no blinding others on the highway, and its a pure white output, not that annoying hyper blue crap. thats HID done right :tu:
my driver's beam seems slightly more intense than my passenger...i am going to break them in for a few days to see if they even out, otherwise i might have to swap the other...but than that, they're stellar :D

Awesome! That's a good discovery there :) That's how I felt when I replaced the stock rubber mounts in my rabbit... they were not nearly as bad as yours though. Holy smokes!
You should try to see what other parts that were holding the motor in that might have been stressed. Exhaust, coolant hoses and coolant necks, etc.
Also I would replace your clutch fan with a nice electric rad fan. I have heard that the stock fans can explode and in some cases shoot the blades through the hood!

actually, we did this on purpose. only because it was bad of course. u-joints were locking up causing moderate vibration and smacking into the floor under acceleration. BMW claims its not serviceable, we decided to give it a go anyway by just replacing the u-joint itself before dropping a couple hundred on a new one.
as it turns out, its really not serviceable.

a new one is on the way, a long with these -- power sport seats with no rips or tears! should make my ass a bit more comfortable on long trips..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/SeekerG/DSCN0173.jpg
AND, about two weeks ago we got mission control to come back online! the OBC works for the first time ever since i've had the car. turned out to be a tiny glass fuse buried way inside the ECU that was the culprit. it has a "gong" warning sound and does a lot of cool stuff, temp, mpg, distance, stop watch, overspeed chime, remote lockout and a lot of other features i haven't figured out yet. i also found out that its light sensitive and automatically dims regardless if your lights are on or not. i was impressed for 1984... it really lights up the interior at night and looks very cool -- the LEDs along the side illuminate beside each program you have running - its star trek!
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/2010-03-31231725.jpg
AND THERES MORE!!!! new dash pad is also on the way from bav auto! so no more nasty cracks on the dash anymore. and as a BONUS i'm also working on securing the larger 3.5L engine as well :D
should be a bit of a transformation here over the few weeks as everything comes together!

look what i picked up in KC yesterday!!
i got A LOT more than i was expecting, i originally went down for the seats, and ended up comming back with the matching rear seats which were in much better condition than mine, a complete cruise control module and the crown jewel...
a complete dashboard with only one small crack in it! the dash made the whole trip worth it, these dashes are very rare and they're hard to find in good shape. usually most people want $500 for a dash in this condition and i took it home for only $80. needless to say i'm VERY excited!
so on the interior, i'll be going from this...

so this weekend me and alek decided to bite the bullet and get the new dash installed. we set our deadline as eurowerks so we had some work to get done. at the same time, since the dash was out, we agreed this would be the perfect time to sort out my water leak issues and as an extra measure of safety and durability, clean up any forming rust and seal the floor with por-15.
here's the progress...
step one, lower dash and console removed:
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/DSC05387.jpg
gauge cluster, diagnostics center and HVAC removed
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/DSC05393.jpg
then with four bolts and some brute force, the old dash pops off the fire wall
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/DSC05394.jpg
next, carpets and the carpet pad were removed. the carpet pad was soaking wet and moldy, i will be replacing it this weekend with new foam...there's no way its going back in.
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/DSC05395.jpg
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/DSC05396.jpg
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/DSC05397.jpg
next, removing the floor liner, which takes a bit of effort to scrape off. once this is all removed today we'll be sanding down the floor, removing any rust and sealing it. a few areas, esp in the drivers section do have a bit of surface rust, however the metal is still solid. its a good thing we're taking the effort to go this far because if it gets much worse it could turn into a real headache.
for it being 25 years old, i've seen much worse.
water leak is def. apparent on the drivers side, comming from a the cowl, a small part of the windshield seal and obviously, the floor plug. passenger side seems to also be from a floor plug. we'll be doing pretty extensive water testing before everything goes back in.

last night we made a lot of progress and got the floor sealed. put the floor plugs back in and resealed them, por-15'd the floor, and also layed the new carpet pads.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/DSC05479.jpg
next, making the templates for the new carpet pad from the old peices. the old pad was in horrible shape, modly, rotted and cracked. we picked up a 3/8s thick foam pad that was very close to the original, it also has sound denting and heat resistant properties as well. i'm doubling up the padding to match that of the original factory pad, overall it will be slightly thicker but it should allow the car to be quieter.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r216/TJ21685/DSC05486.jpg
we're re-using the bulkhead foam peices because they're molded to the floor in a way that we can't easily duplicate. however after some extensive drying and sterlizing they should be just fine. i've cut the pad peices pretty snug, and with it being double layer, they match up perfectly for a flat floor -- which is a trademark of this car.

both layers now fitted into the car and glued into place. double layers in both rear foot wells, and double layers on both driver and passenger compartments. additional pad overing the center console area, and under-seat areas. the duct tape may look cheap, but hey its gonna be under the carpet, you wanna fight about it?

later this week the carpet will be re-installed, along with the rest of the interior. we'll be tidying up some things behind the dash and then everything should be good once again. i think things are going great :D

we picked it up at o'reillys because i was sold out at advance... that and didnt want to drive that far from home...:hide: it can be picked up and any decent parts store i.e. anywhere but carquest... the container no longer looks like that though... its got a carbon look to the container now to match the rest of their products...

we had a major setback with the windshield after it broke. it was replaced by safelite which then didn't seal it properly and leaked water into the car. it was promptly fixed and all is well now but it still pissed me off.
before putting the dash back in we decided to clean up the bag of snakes that lies behind the dash. pretty much all of the wires were exposed either because they weren't wrapped from the factory or it had just fallen off. we also fixed a lot of bad wiring that had been fucked with from the previous owner. it looks a lot better now that everything has been properly tucked, and now everything works in the interior as it should.

SO got bored and sick of being lazy... started in on the valves a couple days ago... did the valve adjustment and found #2 exhaust valve mushroomed under the rocker as well as the adjuster having already been turned all the way up and it still being at a .018 clearance. (its supposed to rest at .012 cold.)
then i got bored and began freshening up the valve cover :) putting a lot of effort into it so i hope it turns out. pics later ;)

Actually the valve cover looks pretty damn good. Did you use a block of sand paper or a razor blade? Either way I bet that was kind of a pain in the ass.

BIG update. it has officially begun!!! body tear down and motor are coming out! it felt so good to ditch that horrible US bumper and throw it across the shop -- and throw it is what i did. it was the most satisfying sound that car has made in YEARS!! the goal is to have the drivetrain out within two weeks :)

more updates today! complete drivetrain is coming out this week. pulled the exhaust today, cross members and getting ready to take it all out from the bottom as a complete unit. after that, the exterior gets a bath and will make the trek to the body shop late this summer. undecided on just how much more is going to come off this car, but i think once it gets to the shop this is going to be a glass-out restoration so it looks proper around all the edges.

Yes they were offered with a 5 speed, although the automatic was more common in the us. Manual was the only option however for M cars
Im sure my long wait to get this thing done will be worth it.
I spy a fuel tank! I wish we had some pictures of the globs of weld that held that thing up; possibly the saddest weld ever done by anybody.

the fuel tank is actually out of the dasher :)
the 6's fuel tank is still firmly attached to the body where it belongs.

What's the final color choice? I like Monaco the most out of all your blues. It's so dark it almost looks black at some angles. I bet it's even more blue in person.
Also you should do your uncle a solid and degrease the engine bay and take it straight to a bay carwash when you depart for delivery!

the engine bay still needs to be completely stripped... we will be out there working on it with him...
