So I picked up the new Nine Inch Nails CD Year Zero this past Tuesday. Overall I like it, it is very "electronic" (as they always have been). The thing that really stands out to me is that the entire album can really only be taken as a whole, there really aren't any stand out songs. I have probably listened to the whole thing 4 times straight through and probably couldn't tell you the real title of any song if you played just one (other than Survivalism). As a whole it works, take any one song out and it probably isn't as good on its own.
Another thing is you really have to listen to it on a decent stereo system to hear all the subtleties in the music, lots going on in one channel that isn't in the other. This album has a "dirtier" electronic sound than Pretty Hate Machine, although the lyrics are more interesting than those on PHM. The album has an interesting concept behind it, its more political than any other NIN album (although Trent has a way with words that keeps it pretty interesting), but overall its a decent album. I would give it 7.5 out of 10.
